HP all in one scanner dont like leopard
I have just installed leopard on my Imac and macbook. :)
Up to then my HP photosmart C6180 printer and scanner worked well. Now after installing Leopard, whenever I try to scan from either machine the HP app fails and closes down. There is no new driver that I am aware of. Any one got an Idea for me to try? Thanks Phil W |
There's an open source CUPS driver for the Photosmart C6180: http://openprinting.org/show_printer...otoSmart_C6180
But I'm somewhat doubtful that it will allow scanning. I suspect you're just going to have to wait for HP to release an update, or else find an alternate scanner. Trevor |
You might consider try the TWAIN SANE Interface with your scanner. While it's not listed as a supported scanner, it's not listed as unsupported. If it works, it should solve a lot of problems.

I have the HP PHotosmart C7280 All-in-One. I've bought Leopard, but I'm afraid to install it. Does anyone know if it will work with the HP?

HP Scanner installer workaround
Here's a potential workaround for all of you having issues installing HP Scanner software and/or drivers on Leopard. When I tried to install the software for my 4070 scanner, the installer would hang halfway through and would require a force quit to end the process. Not exactly sure why the installer hangs...maybe it's permissions? I didn't take much time to research what the best way to do this is, I'm merely reporting how I got it to work for myself. This worked for installing the software and drivers for an HP ScanJet 4070 Photosmart Scanner. Caveat: some of these directories may be slightly different for different model scanners..(but maybe not?) and of course...proceed at your own risk.
1) Download and mount the HP Scanner .dmg for your particular scanner 2) Jump into your favorite shell and mkdir ~/HP_INSTALL_TMP 3) cd to /Volumes/HP Scanjet SW/HP Scanjet Multi-Installer3.app/Contents/Sub Installers 4) cp -R * ~/HP_INSTALL_TMP 5) cd ~/HP_INSTALL_TMP 6) cd Scanner (install all installers in directory) 7) cd ../Product (install the installer for your scanner model) 8) cd ../CUE (install all installers in directory..some can be omitted..probably want to at least install the Core) 9) delete your ~/HP_INSTALL_TMP directory 10) REBOOT Works great for me. Even seems to run more quickly than it did on Tiger. Good luck! |
Worked for me!
Thanks, datecrepe - excellent workaround!
BTW, doing this also give you the option of not installing all the extraneous junk with which HP otherwise insists on littering your Mac. |

I have read your solution with interest. I have the HP Installer files, and navigated them as you suggest. However, I am not sure what to do at step 6,7,8. I can go to these directories, but I dont know what directory to install these files into. Also, by install, do you mean that I just move these files to a particular directory? Thanks for your help. Leopard stops my HP scanner working
Hi I need some help.
My new all in one HP printer scanner copier (photosmart C61800) will not give me a scan any more. The app just simply crashes and closes every time I use it on my iMac or MacBook. Is anyone else having this problem??? Thanks Phil W |
Mine is NOT a scanner!!!!
It is an all-in-one device that is supposed to "do it all" I dont want to install a scanner only driver if there is a driver that does it all for my device which is a HP Photosmart C6180. Thanks Phil W |
Surprisingly - HP actually has some information about 10.5 at their web site.
Here's a specific page about the C6180 all-in-one - http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...os=219&lang=en |
Here's some info from the HP website (did you check there before updating to Leopard?)

Thanks Las Vegas, I had thought that the instructions were specifically for a scanner I now understand what you mean. :)
Phil |
I suggest you look into installing TwainSane for the scanner portion of your HP AIO. If it works, it would make your scanner available to all twain compatible applications like Apple's Image Capture, iPhoto as well as most graphics editors such as Photoshop.
|
Thanks Las Vegas, I had a look through that and found most of it went over the top of my head.
I am not sure what out of all the listed apps I would need, how to install them and what they actually do for me. It amy be best if I wait on HP for an upgrade. I think something is wrong with my installation as when I followed through the instructions kindly pointed out by DeltaMac previously the uninstaller failed the first time, actually it crashed just like the scanner app. Ho humm, guess I am stuck with it for a while because I am not that confident with my new Macs quite yet. Scanner Information
After installing Leopard, my scanjet 4670 would not work. It is an older scanner. I purchased two newer HP scanners and they didn't work either. I call HP and was told by Tech Support that they did not have any scanner that will work with Leopard at this time. He said to keep the older scanner and look for new drivers in 4 to 8 weeks.
|
Try TwainSane mentioned a few messages up.
|
TwainSane would be more useful if it actually had a 10.5 compatiable package. The 10.4 package is set up to NOT install on anything other than 10.4, and the source code does not seem to want to compile correctly.

fortunately, i check all my peripherals before an upgrade, i like to make sure my NAS will be good, printers, external dvd etc. and note there is a difference between upgrade and clean install, i prefer a clean install so there is more to check. jusr because it is a new os doesnt mean old configurations will automatically work. research before action

Download the latest drivers from HP. All almost 200mb of them. Yup, that's what my girlfriend had to do with the free printer/scanner they gave her. I think it's the same model.
|
Good advice, except the OP has Leopard. Presently, the newest drivers for this all-in-one C6180 (as well as an enormous variety of other printers) are included with Leopard. The best thing is to remove any drivers that you may have downloaded from the HP website, and do a custom install of just the HP printer drivers from the Leopard installer DVD.
Here's some good info from the HP web sitehttp://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01234231&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1153494&os=219&lang=en |

Hi, I have the same problem with the same 4070 scanner but cannot really understand the 10 steps. Would you be able to explain them in a few more words please :) I have downloaded the .dmg and mounted it but the rest kind of went over my head.
Thanks a lot, Dylan |
before installing other software try looking in the HP folder in applications
then go to Device Utilities, then HP All-in-One Device Chooser, and select the printer AiO you are using, if you are able to print to it it will show. this worked for me and i am able to scan and copy without problems now good luck |
(merged two threads about same problem started by the same person)
philworrall, please don't start a second thread with the same subject matter as one that you previously started. Trevor |
OK, this problem bugged the hell out of me.
I finally found a personal solution for this. I installed the Apple software update drivers for the printer. Uninstalled the HP softwares and drivers (even though they said they're meant for Leopard) Use Vuescan to scan. And viola, it worked! Not sure why, but after numerous installs and uninstalls of the HP drivers, I am glad something worked! Yes, Vuescan is not free. Perhaps any 3rd party scan software would do. Just uninstall those HP drivers from your computer. (Go to Applications, Hewlatt-Packard, choose the Uninstaller) |
