List of 10.5 problems

Let's list our problems & solutions here! Number them so we can keep track.

No.1 Skpye won't start. After a few bounces, it stops. I have to keep running it from the installation disc image.

No.2 Inquisitor doesn't work with the new Safari on 10.5. I really miss it.

No.3 Mail's smart mailboxes seem to have fewer options now. Eg. I used to set up a smartbox conditioning on mail sizes, no longer possible.

No.4 Mail no longer offers preview panel on the right. (?)

fracai 10-28-2007 02:59 PM

Mail never offered the message pane on the right. That was a plugin you installed.

I don't have Leopard yet, so I can't test the solution I'm offering, but have you seen this?

Please, let me know if it works, I really enjoy Inquisitor.

Skype is working for me. I am using the 2.7.0.49 BETA

Crowelld 10-28-2007 10:16 PM

Skype works fine for me too

talandisjr 10-28-2007 11:40 PM

It took me a few tries, but I finally got Inquisitor to work. Have you done a disk repair and repaired permissions in Disk Utility? Give that a try; it may help.

I'm experiencing another problem: Windows of open applications suddenly quit, and I'm not able to see anything although the app is still running. Once this happens, other apps do the same thing- open up, but not with a window visible. It's very strange! For example, if I double click on a .mov file, I hear the sound, but not the picture. The only thing that "fixes" this is to restart, but then again only for a little while. It doesn't happen with all apps (I'm using Safari now okay, for example). Has anyone else had this problem? Any clues on what's happening, or how to fix it?

Thanks for your time and help!

zjoshua 10-29-2007 02:12 PM

Re: Skype. Same thing with Skype 2.7 BETA. After the first time, or second time, it stops responding. It doesn't help removing all files related either.

New problem: twice now, this morning and just now after work, I can't wake the computer up from sleep. No matter what. Have to hold the power key to force shut down.

zjoshua 10-29-2007 02:14 PM

Cool. Inquisitor now working. Did they release a new version or this is this one of those inexplicable computer things.

I have not experienced the sudden quit symdrom. But my not waking up is worse, no? kind of all apps quit type.

I'm pretty sure that Mail never offered the preview panel on the right. I'm guessing that at some point you installed Letterbox, and then forgot that you had done it. It's not yet Leopard ready, but the developer assures us that it will be soon.

zjoshua 10-29-2007 03:08 PM

you are right, i did install some plug-ins.

Zeitkind 11-05-2007 05:25 PM

Enabling the firewall will kill Skype - like all other program checking its own code with a hash. Apple does a very bad thing: they alter the mach-o-binary with a signature, so hashes of the program itself are broken. Skype starts, notices broken hashes and quits, you can see it on console.
WoW has the same problem. I wonder what they smoke@Apple.. :D

Not soon enough for me....:(

Zeitkind 11-07-2007 06:18 AM

Well, I miss Letterbox too, but it's not a main issue for me. Other things are more severe, like crashing Spotlight, missing/incomplete Mail.app index (search won't find anything in mail bodies).

:(iPhoto is craqshing all the time...

Craig R. Arko 11-07-2007 08:00 AM

Skype (2.7 beta) and iPhoto (08) have both been fine for me since upgrading to 10.5. The only thing which bit me was the outdated APE/blue screen thing.

Permit me to point people to the generic troubleshooting techniques thread:

http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=13846

And remember, when you report problems giving pieces of information like the software version; whether the developer of a 3rd party app claims to be compatible; and perhaps any unusual or unique hardware you may have in use can be very helpful to getting a successful resolution to the issue.

I uninstalled APE AND all the "Unsanity haxies" before upgrading the system. They have created lots of problems with system upgrades in the past. :)

For me, after performing an erase-install to my quad-core mac pro, everything seems to be working great except for two things: Bluetooth and Front Row.

I can no longer send files from my blackberry via bluetooth to the mac. It had a timeout 100% of the time, even though the devices have been paired successfully.

Front Row claims that I am not connected to the internet in any way, even though i most certainly am. It has been that way from the start, and I do not have any special changes made in the OS firewall.

I've done a clean install (reformatted the hard drive. Only has leopard and iWork 08 on it) on a iMac G5 & an upgrade on a C2D iMac.

Issues... I think the sequence is at No. 6

6) USB port oddities. "dead" USB ports on the C2D iMac. By "dead" I mean nothing plugged into two of the USB ports would work. This was cured by rebooting the machine and hasn't come back yet. C2D iMac

7) Leopard not recognizing internal bluetooth hardware ( iMac G5 ). Just refused to recognize it. Hardware tests came back fine. Resolved it by unplugging the iPod Nano's USB cable and rebooting ( just rebooting didn't work).

8) Seemingly random kernel panics while using Safari. Sometimes it happens when I go to a certain site (ESPN.com), sometimes it happens when I scroll ( Apple.com downloads section ). iMac G5. No resolution yet since I'm still trouble shooting. Looking at the logs, the nVidia driver seems to be problem but not 100% sure yet.

I have a number of different machines running 10.5 ,so far the only issues I've found are Photoshop not working on Intel and G4 iBook.
Had issues getting G4 Mini to share screen with G4 iMac, it worked for a bit but now the selection to share screens is grey, I realized later that there is a drop down within iChat under Audio to allow screen share, though I didn't check this , I'm pretty sure that's not the issue.

innerware 11-08-2007 06:52 AM

I had a friend use his original 10.5 disk to do an install on a friends machine. All went as normal until he got to the registration part. Really weird but his details not the owners....name. ..address etc appeared in the fields! It's as if the details were burnt onto the install disk..really weird stuff. can anyone explain?

ThreeBKK 11-08-2007 10:45 AM

In addition to my menu bar not being transparent, I also have a sluggish Finder. When navigating in column view and pressing the right arrow key to go deeper into each directory, I get a very jerky horizontal scroll animation. This jerkiness also sometimes occurs in the dock, word of the day screensaver, and when opening a new Finder window.

USB-connected Nokia not recognized by Leopard

system log reports "CDC driver not found" when USB connection made in Default Mode (for iSync-ing).
This problem seems to be phone model-dependent.

Tiger OK ... Leopard no go.
Phone (Nokia 6136 and some other models reported on discussion forums) could be iSync'd in Tiger but not Leopard.

pdf documents not displaying correctly in preview

some pdf documents do not display correctly in preview 4.0, the text does not display at all or is garbled
the same pdf displays normally in acrobat
seems to be a bug in the new preview

Preference panel for MySQL is broken. Seems to have something to do with the fact that almost all users, including "mysql" have been renamed with a _ in front of the name. Not a big deal but it's worth noting.

!!!! Solved ONE Leopard related problem !! QuickTime can work in firefox

I solved the problem for Firefox !!!!!!!!

first what didnt solve the problem
but created the problem
a simple upgrade yo Leopard

than what didnt solve the problem even was making it worse
a clean install with archiving my old system
mac os 5 became very sluggish and hanging every so and so second

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

than what did solve my problems (sofar) !!!!

I did a clean install with erasing disk from the leopard 5.0 install dvd

after having backed up my hard disk,
with the Bombich shareware carbon copy cloner 3.0.1
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

than when i was asked if i had anything to import from another mac or any hard drive
i did an import of all my apps and all of my settings

since than everything is working fine fast faster as ever b4

even in safari i can hear the music in the video's on http://www.eventnow.tv sadly only with a non moving still frame

so the safari story stays unresolved but for the rest it works fine with Firefox 2009
