England: A sporting catastrophe

Last week England were on a sporting high, we were in the Rugby world cup final, Lewis Hamilton was pretty much F1 champion, and the England football team we're on a high and we're favorites to beat Russia. Now, England may not qualify for Euro 08, The rugby team lost a match they really should have won, and Lewis Hamilton disappointingly effed up the last race of the season. A lot can change in a week cant it? It goes to say what has happened to English sport. And what effect will these 3 huge defeats have on the sporting country?

Personally i think we as a sporting nation expect far too much of our teams. That said i think only Lewis hamilton was unlucky not to win as he has been the best racer all season and its more his team that let him down, but thats just me, what do you guys thinks gone wrong ..?

phew.... almost lost it there... but I think I am okay now... deep breaths...!

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.....!!

Why do we suck at sport????.. We invent them all... then suck at them!

Tennis? Cricket? Rugby? Football?... F1?....

The only thing we are good at is tiddlywinks, speed mincing and cycling in spandex!.... its time to do what other great sporting nations like America, China and Russia do.... pump our athletes full of performance enhancing drugs!.... god knows they could do with a boost :)

Hamilton could still win thought.....

That rugby ref was blind. The TO was amazing as well. How that try was disallowed is still beyond me.

It was a 2 a.m. KO here and I still feel like crap after that heavy night - and it wasn't even worth it...

I'm a huge Hamilton fan at this point (and am sure he will win the title at some point), but the idea of him taking his first title through a technicality...just doesn't taste right in my mouth.

It's funny, Photek, but I read your list of sports and realized that American sucks at all of those as well. I guess our real secret is that we invent our own sports and make sure no one else plays them so we can say we're great at them. For example, America has won the "World Series" of Baseball for the last hundred years or so, except once when Canada won.

The only real problem comes up when the game leaks beyond our borders (like basketball), then we end up in the exact same boat...

its not a bad idea you know..

Do you know the USA has a 'rugby' team?.... I was shocked when I found out... it must be ex-pats :D

It will be interesting to see if rugby ever makes it to become a "mainstream" sport in the States. My local pub is American-run and the rugby has a good following with the US expats there. They seem to like to sheer (unprotected) violence of the tackles, rucks and mauls.

The Eagles put up a good showing in the World Cup, so let's hope the upward trend continues for them.

Here in Russia people tend to forget such catastrophes very soon.
The only thing that makes us disappointed are bad results in hockey, figure skating and football. And the first and the second are traditional sports for Russians, the third one is absolutely alien (though USSR-team have won Euro long time ago).

It may not be right for him to win that way, but you cant say he doesnt deserve it, especially after the race in japan in which i think he was amazing

after watching the Rugby over the past few weeks I have come to a conclusion....
Rugby is essentially a fight... with a ball chucked in for good measure... :D

you are mistaken my friend, as a former rugby player (ok not professional i played in the under 15's at school) rugby is a gentleman's game, if you see how restrained the players are, and how they don't talk back to the ref, it's a lot more civilized then football, and if you see how hard the tackles are and how the players get back up, you see how footballers are a big bunch of girls.

If you want to see a no holds bar game youtube "aussie rules" no theres a game which is a big fight, they dont even care about the ball, just beating the crap out of each other, makes for good viewing :D

Yup, 1960, to be exact. Runners-up 3 times thereafter too.

I hooked up with an old school friend on Facebook the other day... I hadn't seen him in 14 years...!
The first thing he asked me was 'do you remember knocking me out cold when you were going for a try in Rugby practice?'

... I honestly didn't... .... :D

maybe some more drama to the f1 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/moto...ne/7056308.stm

I think Alonso is making his feelings clear about how he doesnt like lewis and Mclaren

Football was of different shape that days... The individuals were more significant than teamwork. Today the tables have turned. The technical skills of players have soared all over the world, and the sport is changing its face a bit.

Rugby world cup was won by the better team after taking a 36-0 beating in the pool rounds did you really expect to win? As for the ref, the foot was on the line before he grounded and then only did he lift it up and ground the try. All those snapshots of him grounding with foot in air were after he had been ruled out, Good TO call. However great football scores 6-0 to Arsenal GET-IN

Ok 36-0 is one thing, but in the final, South africa didnt play any better then England, after all England were the only team to break the opponents defense to score a try which got rulled out, SA had Periods of 5 minutes on the england try line but england had a solid defense which kept out SA from scoring.

I won't miss him when he leaves, frankly. I've never liked him. Maybe they can replace him with Button and we can have an all British team :). I figure America descends from England...so it's the best shot I have at feeling akin to one of the teams...
