New RAM in my iMac G5 gives me kernel panic!!

I'll start this off by saying that I'm not a unix guy, I am a Classic guy. Better at GUI stuff than text.

I have a iMac G5 ALS 1.8 Ghz 17 inch running Mac OS X 10.4.10. It previously had 1 GB of RAM. I got 2 sticks of 1 GB to max it out at 2 GB. I put these sticks in the iMac. Boot it up. Apple shows up. Spinning progress wheel shows up. ERRRRRRRRR Kernel Panic. Oh lord....here we go.

I take the memory out, switch them, try one stick, put the old memory back in, switch them, swap, mix, churn, and any other config I can think of. No luck. KP every time. Getting frustrated.....

Put the new memory in. Boot up off the CD. Huzzah! It works and shows that I have 2 GB of memory. I run Disk Utility and check and repair all volumes and permissions. I try to boot up off of my HD. BAM! KP... I try to boot up in safe mode. BAM! KP... guh...

I run the Apple Hardware Test from the CD. I do a quick check. Everyhing checks out alright. I do an extensive check over night. Everything checks out. I try to reboot, still no luck. KP.

I boot up off of CD and install Mac OS X 10.4 onto an external FW drive. I boot up using the FW drive as my startup disk. It takes way longer to KP this time. It got me excited... I boot up off of the FW drive in safe mode. Huzzah! It works, and it shows that I have 2 GB of memory.

So here I am. In safe mode off of a FW drive. My HD's are fine, the memory seems fine, but my brain is a little rattled...

You should check the RAM with 'memtest' (3rd-party utility that does a much better job of testing it than the Apple Hardware test). Make sure you run iit long enough - probably overnight.

thecontractor 10-18-2007 07:27 PM

OK

I checked the memory with memtest. It is fine. I kinda figured it would be because when I safe boot off of my FW drive, it shows that I have 2 gigs.

I thought I might do an archive install of os X 10.4 on my internal HD, but when I tried that, it didn't work right. It never got past the verification in the install process.

I downloaded AppleJack. I installed it and ran all the tests, and my computer is running fine.

I realized that it is running drive tests on my external FW drive because that is where it let me install it. I can't install on my internal because I can't boot up off of my internal because I get kernel panics.

Frustrated am I.

Can anyone help me? What I want to do is to be able to boot up off of my internal harddrive. It should work, I can't figure out why it won't.

Last resort, I will backup the drive and zero it out and install Leopard. But that is a last resort. I figure that I may have bumped it when I opened the computer and it could be on te verge of failing. BUT that being said, I have had great luck with my hardware and I really don't think that this is the problem. I honestly think that this is a software problem. I have dealt with bullshit tech support that jumped to conclusions and made me zap my drive when I didn't need to.(it was Apple tech support, they charged my 50$ then told me to erase my drive after promising me that I didn't need to, so I got pissed and they refunded my money(woo!)) So I don't need to be told to get a new harddrive or to take it to a genius bar. I can figure that out myself. That is why I am on this board.

Anyone wanna help me take this one on?

It's good that 'memtest' is showing that your RAM is fine (assuming you ran memtest long enough to do a proper test - minimum several hours usually).
But note that the fact that the 2 GB of RAM is showing up is not relevant to the question as to whether the RAM is good or bad. Bad RAM can show up fine and also appear to work just fine until some particular circumstance occurs.

Anyway, it would seem that your problem is not with the RAM.

I see 3 avenues of investigation:
1) Figure out why you need to use Safe Mode when booting from your external disk. To pursue this, look at the system.log on your external disk (e.g. using the "Console" app) and see which things are getting loaded in Safe Mode. Then attempt to boot regularly (non-Safe Mode) from the external disk and then (after booting back into Safe Mode again) look at the system.log to see where the bootup failed. Tell us the details.
Similarly, look at (and show us) the panic.log file that is in the /Library/Logs folder.

2) Look at the system.log that is on your internal drive (it should be available in the folder /Volumes/name_of_your_internal_drive/private/var/log when you are booted from the external disk). Again, show us what messages are coming just before the point where the boot fails.
Similarly, look at the panic.log file that is in /Volumes/name_of_your_internal_drive/Library/Logs

3) Run more tests on your internal drive. E.g. run Disk Utility's "Repair Disk" on the internal drive while booted from the external drive.

Alright.

It should be noted that the computer will not restart on its own. I have to hold down the power button to restart. This is the system.log of me waking up my computer, then trying to restart. Maybe it helps:

I couldn't find the panic.log in my external's log folder. I did find a panic.log in my internal drives library/log folder. I don't think that this will help, the dates are all wrong, but it could:

I couldn't find this private/var/log for my internal drive. I couldn't find the private folder.

I have run all of disk utility's tests and they come out fine. I ran memtest for over 4 hours and it came back alright.

I tried to copy my entire internal drive over to my external drive, but it won't let me because I don't have permissions. I want permissions, how can I fix this and why would it not want me to do it in the first place? So there aren't 2 system folders?

I hope this helps a little more. Let me know what else you need.

1) The panic.log shows several BlueTooth-related items in the backtrace. So it would seem that the problem is related to BlueTooth.
I therefore recommend trying to disable BlueTooth. You might be able to do this via the System Preferences while booted in Safe Mode.
Otherwise, you could just go into the /System/Library/Extensions folder and move the BlueTooth items there to some other location, then try restarting again. And a similar thing for the BlueTooth kernel extensions in the corresponding folder on your internal drive.
Is your internal drive named "Augusta" ?
In that case it would be
/Volumes/Augusta/System/Library/Extensions

2) Why do you want to copy your whole internal drive to your external. That doesn't usually make sense. Instead you should just copy the files that you care about - usually that means copying your home folder.
To make a full backup of your internal drive, use one of the 3rd-party utilities like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper

I don't know what I did, if I even did anything...but my computer will boot up off of my internal drive (not augustas, that is another external). So now I am on my internal drive in safe boot mode. Everyhing seems fine. Now the only problem that I have is that I can't boot up out of safe mode. Let me get you some .logs...

Any ideas why I can't boot up in regular mode?

Also, this might have a connection the the problem. The computer will not restart or shut down on its own. I have to force the power off everytime.

What gives?

hayne 10-21-2007 10:56 PM

It's not too interesting to see the logs from when you had no problems (Safe mode) except perhaps in comparison with the logs from when you had problems.

thecontractor 10-21-2007 11:17 PM

Yeah, I suppose you are right :D

I guess I don't know where to find the log that shows a problem during startup...

It would be in the same log file (system.log) that you were looking at before - but an earlier part of the file (see the timestamps on messages).
Log files get archived as system.log.0, system.log.1, etc under the /var/log folder so you might have to look at one of these older logs - you can do this with the Console app.

thecontractor 10-22-2007 10:14 PM

I have searched and searched and am convinced that it is not recording what happens if I try to boot up normally. I can only get the log if I boot in safe mode. If I boot into verbose mode, I can see the panic happen, but it scrolls too fast for me to see what first goes wrong. All I know is that it says
"panic" "We are hanging here" or something like that at the very end, then it sits there. When I boot into safe mode, the grey apple shows up, the spinning wheel starts spinning, then the fan blasts full speed for a minute or 2, then it stops, then it checks the CD drives and harddrives, then it boots.

Any other suggestions?

"Searching" should not be needed. The log file is the same "system.log" that you have been looking at already. Just look at the timestamps on the messages in that log. Don't you see messages from the last time when you tried to boot up normally?

DeltaMac 10-22-2007 10:59 PM

Just my 2˘ here---
Looking over the high points, if you can boot into safe mode, but not a normal boot, then the memory seems likely to not be the problem, but just a coincidence. You haven't been able to fix by changing back to original memory configuration. You seem to boot normally to a fresh system install on the external drive, right? Could be hardware, sure - but, by now, I would be considering an Archive and Install of your system on your internal drive.

thecontractor 10-22-2007 11:53 PM

I have looked at the system.log and it doesn't show 2 booting cycles. It does not show the 1st unsuccessful boot. I have looked at all the timestamps and it is not showing the non safe boot. What I have posted here is exactly all I can find. It is claiming that there is a panic, but my panic.log is not reflecting anything.

Yes, I believe the memory is alright. No, I tried the other memory configuration and it did the exact same thing. No, I cannot boot normally from an external fresh system, only in safe mode. I have done an archive install on the internal and can boot up off of it. I now think that it was never a problem with the system and I never needed to reinstall, I just figured that I did because it took so long to boot up that I thought that it wasn't going to. I just didn't wait long enough. I am pretty sure I am going to save what I want, zero the drive, and go to Leopard. But, I am really worried that it will still panic...I just want to be able to boot normally before I zero the drive.

Is there any way to take a snap shot of what the system reads if I boot up in verbose mode or single user mode? I want to give you guys more info, but I can't find it!

You mean that you see a gap (in timestamps) where there are no messages in the system.log during the time when you tried to boot normally. And you see messages in that system.log file from both before and after the time you tried to boot normally? That is very strange if true.

thecontractor 10-23-2007 12:48 AM

For reference, I will shut down my computer tonight. I will try booting up normally tomorrow evening, then I will boot into safe mode. I will copy the section connecting tonight to tomorrow.

It sounds like this is highly unlikely so I am making damn sure I know what I am talking about. Here is a sample of yesterdays shutdown, to todays unsafe boot, then the safe boot:

For what it's worth, I note that several of the messages from the log in your last message are the same as those reported in this other thread:

I think I am getting closer to my problem. I think I see the computer getting hung up on the AirPort card while I am in verbose mode. I am still looking for where the hell it is dumping the panic.log.

In my search, I did find some system logs that had some different info. Here is an unsuccessful boot up. I can certainly tell there is a problem here, "respawning too quickly, throttling" and all. Translation?

Huzzah! I took out the AirPort extentions out of the extentions folder and my computer will boot up normally again! Damn I wish I had done that before all of these reinstalls. Now I have a real mess.

Alright, now I seem to have a different problem. My AirPort card is out of wack...

How am I to fix this problem?

So, you removed your airport extensions, and now you wonder why you have problems with your airport card, eh?

Again, the possible memory problems was, I think, just a coincidence, and really threw you off the trail of the actual problem...

Archive & Install is a likely next step - or if that doesn't help - (backup
everything), erase and install.
