My new audio setup

Hey all,

I'm sure I'm not alone in enjoying fine audio gear and listening, and I mean really listening to music. So I thought I'd post in the coat room and show off my new audio gear that I picked up recently.
Please post here with specs of your audio gear, your impressions of what you like about it, and maybe even pics.

What you see here is a VAST improvement upon my old Sony piece of poop.

I'm a musician, and I really enjoy listening to music of many styles, so here it is:

1x NAD C320BEE Amplifier (about AU$400 second-hand)

1x Pair of Tannoy R3 Cherry Speakers ($2000 new, but I got a great deal)

1x Onkyo 6-disc CD-Turntable (nothing fancy...yet)

1x Running pair of TaraLabs Cables @ $75 per/metre.

LOL... whens the party???

kel101 09-27-2007 11:53 AM

lol its missing one thing, a kick ass subwoofer :)

blubbernaut 09-27-2007 09:24 PM

Dude, get your expensive gear *off* the floor!

While you're at it, get your beer (gallantry is back) more than 'fall-and-smash' distance away from your amp!

That's some heavy-duty cabling there. Where'd you shop?

Anti 09-28-2007 12:17 AM

Man, I feel bad now. My Yamaha R-50 component stereo gave out a little while ago.

Now I'm using some trashy Aiwa ministereo with a busted CD player. >.<

specter 09-28-2007 08:17 AM

Don't you use your fireplace for fire?:D

Anti 09-28-2007 12:30 PM

I've heard good things about NAD-stuffs.

And he's an Aussie, he has so much booze that he has to use some of it for lighting the fireplace.

Ahh my friend, a subwoofer would well and truly ruin the sound as it does in most setups.
First off, my room isn't big enough to justify a sub, I own quite a nice sub (a $3200 one, in fact) but after much trial and error, the sound is 100 times better without it for now. Most people don't have the space for a sub, you really need quite a bit of room space for it.

I know I know, although it's hasn't been knocked or stepped on, I would like to get a little table that i'll design and knock together myself for it all to sit on.
The beer gets drunk pretty quick (this is australia, after all) so it was only 'resting' there. Nobody uses that fireplace anyway!
The Cabling is Tara-Labs (www.taralabs.com) which I got from Carlton Audio and Visual (http://www.carltonaudiovisual.com.au/) for about $75 a metre if i recall, plus yes, it is pretty heavy-duty and is biwirable!

Dude! Doesn't sound like your getting a good run this year, first with your bad luck on the MBP, now your Yami is out!
Plus don't get me started on ... *shudder* Aiwa...

The NAD's are FANTASTIC Amps, absolutely consistent and real warm, without coloring the sound. Just avoid NAD CD players, there are alot better out there than them for the same price range...

blubbernaut 09-30-2007 08:49 PM

wow, I was going to say that looks like a Carlton house!

specter 10-01-2007 06:07 AM

I imagine a comfortable armchair or a sofa in front of the fire place - where we can't see from the photo. Stuffed with beer, of course.:)

Can't be Carlton. Where's the bowl and Tally-ho?

blubbernaut 10-01-2007 07:47 PM

Faz: tee-hee, but it can't be a student house...not with a $3200 subwoofer that's not getting used.

...and there's only six packs there - no slabs.

A quality subwoofer can improve the sound of most any good sound system, provided a few basic guidelines are followed, the most important of which is:

A subwoofer should only be loud enough that it is noticeable only when it is OFF, not when it is on.

BTW Nice setup.

Garagebandboy 10-02-2007 04:45 AM

i have a bose sound system and it amazing your sound system is really good but my speakers could prop go just as loud and they are smallerhttp://audiovisual.ivci.com/images/b...ment-photo.gif

I'm sure it could. The whole purpose of my setup is to listen to MUSIC, not gaming, not watching films, just MUSIC. I don't need a system that will blow my ears off in volume, which is not really important at all.

I quite appreciate Bose systems, they make fantastic speakers, but their Amps leave a lot to be desired.

What kind of music do you prefer to listen to?

My tastes are very very broad.

At the same time I'd have Svatoslav Richter's Beethoven Sonata's, with Jaco Pastorius, The Beatles, Floyd Thursby, Weather Report, The Tibetian Monastery Choir, Coltrane, Alice Russell, The Mars Volta, Tom Waits...etc...the list could be endless.

To sum it up, I generally avoid 'pulped' mainstream pop that has no feeling, no soul, and is made and marketed deliberatly to angry teens who will buy it because it's 'insightful' or real.

Music is whatever you enjoy I also believe. There is a LOT of good music out there, but thanks largely to mass marketing and what we are sold, and thanks to things like iTunes, myspace - these are RUINING music for me.
iTunes for instance promotes buying songs per song, which diminishes the beautiful concept of an 'album'.
And myspace...don't get me started...it's an internet tool that makes even the most talentless hacks seem legible and 'musical'...argh [/rant]

Now where was I??

I can recommend you some music if you like, something to scout out and have a listen to if you let me know what you like?

Well, my tastes are not very broad, in fact. Actually i prefer the rock/metal dimension with slight deviations. I like traditional music of these styles, but I have been into progressive rock acts, such as Arena, Ten, Gary Hughes lately (I don't know if these artists are familiar to you) etc.
I also think that music must be listened to at a sitting in full albums - to preserve the atmosphere.

WOW! Someone else on this planet that actually has the same views as me when it comes down to the actual 'listening' of music. An album, in most cases, should be listened to in one sitting to preserve and enjoy the experience. There is something very souless and lifeless about listening to song by song ala ipod and itunes style that drives me nuts!

I have heard of some of those groups you mentioned, I too enjoy alot of prog rock and prog metal at times.

Slight deviations you say? I haven't heard of 'Ten' but you might enjoy listening to some Liquid Tension Experiment, or even 'RUSH' (canadian prog rock) or Jane's Addiction (their very early stuff was great)

specter 10-05-2007 08:17 AM

My experience with Liquid Tension Experiment Part I was absolutely fantastic! The band breaks all the style boundaries, they combine many moods in their music - a great piece of instrumental prog-rock. I like Gordian Knot very much - this is also an instrumental band from USA they play some progressive rock - a very atmospheric piece of music.
Of course, atmosphere is the most important thing in music, especially progressive genres. I don't understand people who download single songs (though nowadays musical industry is oriented at this way of penetrating into people's minds).

Exactly, it makes no sense to me whatsoever.

I'll have to check out Gordian Knot, and you'll have to check out LTE Part 2.

Thinking of 'atmosphere', I forgot to mention one artist that had a huge influence on me - Brian Eno

I think it's his contribution that makes Low my favourite Bowie album.

Speaking of music you need to listen to in one sitting. Discreet Music? How about Apollo that he recorded with Roger Eno.

Your post needs some serious editing. I'm not sure what you are on about, maybe use some punctuation.

If you have a question about the request of Apple Loops, make a thread about it under 'Applications', but please remember that this forum does not support piracy or illegal activity of any kind.

sorry dude!
