The meaning of some common internet acronyms.
AFAIC = As Far As I’m Concerned
AFAIK = As Far As I Know FFR = For Future Reference …etc… |
PITA -- pain in the a..
lol -- laughing out loud IMHO -- in my humble opinion |
GIYF = Google Is Your Friend
|
For everything else, there is UrbanDictionary.com.
Some of the definitions might be slightly rude/inappropriate, depending on what the acronym is, BTW. |
Very interesting! I didn't know the meaning of many of them! English is not my native language
|
YMMV = Your mileage may vary
TBH = To be honest |

The next generation of online shorthand
.
A week ago, David Pogue wrote a very entertaining piece in his New York Times blog, proposing that we make our online shorthand more contemporary. Among his best of suggestions: * IIOYT — is it on YouTube? * DYFH — did you Facebook him/her? * BIOI — buy it on iTunes * CMOS — call me on Skype * GGNUDP — gotta go, no unlimited data plan * JUOC — jacked up on caffeine * MBLO — much better-looking online * KYST — knew you’d say that * NBL — no battery left * CTTC — can’t talk, teacher’s coming * TWD — typing while driving * SPLETS — send pics later; Edge too slow * CSVUI — can’t send video, using iPhone * BPWMI — boss playing with my iPhone * OOM — out of messages (for iPhone users who haven’t upgraded their AT&T “200 messages a month” plan) * WIWYA — when I was your age * YKT – you kids today * CRRE — conversation required; remove earbuds * WDO? — what are you doing online? * AYD? — are you drunk? * DYMK? — does your mother know? * IGAT — I’ve got abbreviations, too You can read the full article here. :) -- ArcticStones |
As much as I know, I'd never, ever use a good 99.9% of these. They just sound off.
|
The only ones I ever use (on a limited basis at that) are GIYF, PITA, and WTF. I won't translate the last one.

IANAL = I Am Not A Lawyer

I Don't Use Acronyms Very Often But It Is Interesting To See A Thread With So Many Different Ones Listed, You Learn Something New Every Day (As it happens, This is the first occasion I have had to use that particular acronym) |

The only one I use on a regular basis is WTF. Then again, I think it expresses my anger/surprise more when I say What. The. @#%$. |
Oh right, I forgot about wtf I use that one a lot too. And as for OOM, I do play diablo II some still and use that on occasion, but I used it much more when I played a healing class in WoW so if I went OOM I had to let people know so they wouldn't expect a heal.
|
The only two I normally use are lol and IMHO, just because it's easier and looks less hooky that way.
Every now and then I'm tempted to use WTF? NORWTF? And RTFM! But so far I've resisted. |
One that would make sense at forums.macosxhints would be "AHWS"; as Hayne would say.
|
some of my favorite ones is LMAO= 'laugh my @#$ off' and ROLF='roll on floor laughing'. I always use frequently WTV='whatever' and STFU='shut the @#$% up' :D
|
among bsd geeks, FFS might just mean Fast FileSystem, the default BSD FS (filesystem)
