Show off your uptime.

I figured since we have a "Show off your desktop" and "menulets" topic, why not have everyone show off how stable your Mac is, or how long it has gone without a restart? I'm curious as to how long people's Macs can go on for without being restarted.

Unfortunately, mine's nothing:
phorium:~ chris$ uptime
18:20 up 1 day, 1:58, 2 users, load averages: 2.68 1.47 0.89

johnkeates 08-07-2007 07:10 AM

TheG5:~ john$ uptime
13:09 up 11:58, 3 users, load averages: 0.32 0.25 0.24

I'll post again when it says 14 days (as usual :D)

Photek 08-07-2007 08:10 AM

isnt this a bit of an irresponsible thread... what with global warming and saving energy?

My Mac gets turned off when I dont need it...

you wouldn't leave your car running when your not using it... or leave you lights on... would you?

acme.mail.order 08-07-2007 08:26 AM

21:20 up 2 days, 22 hrs, 2 users, load averages: 0.09 0.27 0.27

Wish you'd done this last week, I rebooted the thing over the weekend after a security update. Was > 1 month before that.

My linux webserver reports:
up 320 days, 5:56, 1 user, load average: 0.98, 1.01, 0.92

daliscar55 08-07-2007 08:51 AM

yes mine too is switched off when not needed. nothing is that important to leave it on for a month surely, your electricity bills must be really high.......

acme.mail.order 08-07-2007 09:00 AM

A headless Mini running as a server really doesn't consume that much power. And my (company's) email is important enough to leave it on :D

daliscar55 08-07-2007 09:06 AM

where do you get the uptime stats from?

acme.mail.order 08-07-2007 09:10 AM

Open the Terminal and type

( wait for it )

uptime

daliscar55 08-07-2007 09:28 AM

isnt the terminal just marvellous? im a bit shy of that area though so dont know ant commands.

thanks

cpragman 08-07-2007 09:51 AM

mine is only shut down for passing thunderstorms, and reboots required by SW Update. Sleeps a lot, though.

daliscar55 08-07-2007 09:57 AM

what mac are you using cpragman? i did some considerable tests with my g4 mdd 867 mhz mac and found it to still consume quite high amounts of electricity even when in sleep. To get my bills down i shut it off everytime i wasnt using it or it wasnt doing a major task......

following from that if putting into sleep why not shut it down? any particular reasons? would the same apply to macbooks?

Wee_Guy 08-07-2007 10:13 AM

I leave mine on from about 4 O'clock PM (UK GMT) to about 10PM, but on weekends/days off it goes on at some point between 8 and 10 AM (depending on when i wake up)

cpragman 08-07-2007 10:19 AM

When I'm not using it, the wife or kid are. If no one's using it, it's folding proteins.

daliscar55 08-07-2007 10:36 AM

Protein folding is the physical process by which a polypeptide folds into its characteristic three-dimensional structure. Your computer can do that? :)

Yes. Well, it can model it, which is very important if you'd like to see a cure for many diseases.

Edit:
It's summer time, and Dual G5s produce a lot of heat, so I turn mine off when not being used. During the other three seasons I leave it running two instances of Folding@home: one console and one screen saver. Even when I'm using the computer, the console runs. The screen is set to shut off after about 10 minutes but the screen saver keeps chugging numbers.

Anti 08-07-2007 12:53 PM

My MacBook pro, when asleep, would not disrupt the uptime log, so I assume having it asleep counts as well.

If you want to go up against the champs, there's
Hit-Up: the Worldwide Mac OS X Uptime Challenge

I am not a member there, but my home iTunes audio/video server (running Panther) is currently at 82 days 9 hours 43 minutes. Its record is around 115 days before I decided to let Software Update apply security updates and restart.

kel101 08-21-2007 04:01 AM

arrgh i hate folding at home, i can never get it to work.

anyway my uptime is only 1day 7hrs because i always reboot to windows, if you didnt include that, its been on for a good week and a half

Anti 08-21-2007 04:47 AM

I'm on my Windoze machine since the G4 breathed it's last.

As you can imagine, this thing goes down a lot.

I appear to be the uptime champion here so far:

[quicksilver:~] macnut% uptime
14:01 up 36 days, 17:55

If I'm not using the Mac, my wife or stepkids are. When it's not being used at all, it runs SETI@home. I set the screen to go off at 20 minutes of inactivity. I only restart for a software update that requires it.

J_T 09-20-2007 08:48 PM

loserv:/ admin$ uptime
17:46 up 59 days, 3:24, 1 user, load averages: 1.35 1.46 1.37

It would be up for even longer if I hadn't of ran that stupid 10.4.10 update. Oh well.

Only one problem... syslogd starts failing :p

themacnut 10-22-2007 10:47 AM

Yeah, about a week or so after I posted those uptime stats, I ended up having to reboot my machine due to a number of annoying problems: the machine slowed to a crawl, various apps stopped launching or took much longer than usual to launch, some of my peripherals stopped responding.

I tried to log out all accounts then log back in, but it only cleared up some of those issues-I found myself forced to reboot to fix them all. This is a common problem with all the Macs and OSes I've owned. I wonder how the people running their machines for hundreds of days straight manage to keep them usable?

we might have a friendly little competition going between us. my server is currently at 81 days, 5 hours, and 27 minutes. The only reason it is this low is that i went through and did some updates and had to restart it. And it is on a small battery backup so a short power outage should not affect it.

EDIT: Doh! I just noticed your post was from 2 months ago!

brettgrant99 10-22-2007 07:31 PM

Our server was up for over 100 days, but then nfs stopped working. After talking to applecare, we decided to reboot it. That fixed the issue, but whne I told the tech that the server had been up for only 100 days, he said, "That's pretty good."

I thought 100 days was a liitle lame, I was expecting 300+ days.

If you're still going, you win. At around 115 days (again) I went for a whole pile of deferred "restart required" system and QuickTime updates and that Mac's uptime is just 12 days right now. I took the opportunity to run all the maintenance on it so we'll see how far it gets this time.

I have a number of computers that have been up for at least 133 days with a load of 2 (for the dual machines) or 4 (for the dual/dual machines).

I'm very pleased with that. The file didn't really survive my transfer, but take a look.

Before I realized what an incredible waste of electricity it was I used to let my previous machine (PB G4) run all the time. My record with that computer was 63 days. Unless I'm processing a video or downloading a large file I now responsibly shut my machine down every night. I am also much more aware of the value in running Onyx (or similar) when necessary.

As of this posting, the record at http://www.hitup.org/ is 1669 days, 18 mins

If you frequently power up your computer, it can use as much power as if you leave it on. Since I'm just as likely to use mine at any time of the day or night, barring the hours from 3:00 am until 6:00 when I'm most likely to be sleeping, I probably save some power by just leaving it on. It is wasteful to leave it on doing nothing though, so I keep my machine running folding@home both as a console and a screen saver. At least that way the energy I'm using will benefit everyone. ;)

styrafome 11-05-2007 12:38 PM

My high uptimes with my PowerBook do not raise my electricity bills. It sleeps all night on battery, and in the morning not a lot of battery power has been used. As long as the battery gets topped off, it could continue doing this indefinitely.

stokessd 11-11-2007 06:58 PM

The mac is pretty brain dead about having to reboot for certain updates. I used to play games with uptime on my linux boxes but then I realized that I wasn't being vigilant with patches and updates as I should be. So now I just reboot when it asks me.

Also given the price of gas vs. the price of electricity for heating my home, leaving things on to heat my house is now actually cheaper than heating it with gas. Sure in the summer when the gadgets are fighting the air conditioning, it's an issue, but now that the heat is on, it's really not and issue.

This is a G4 867 running 10.3.9. Of course it's not doing much, just hosting a wiki, a few personal websites and running icq. There's no battery backup, so I guess I've been lucky not to have any power outs. Expecting to move to a new place "soon," and I'll probably shut it down for good by then. It's kinda expensive in electricity to have it running mostly for fun.

jeffo 02-18-2008 02:18 PM

well, I got my replacement server set up so i took down my server that had my personal best uptime on it. I was about to shut it down but i noticed it had 90 minutes left before it flipped over the 190 day mark so i let it run for another 90 minutes just so i could say it was up for 190 days.
