Problem with new Macbook. Re-istalled Tiger and now is looping?
So i have a new black macbook, 160gb hard drive running 10.4.9.
I found that when i selected shut down, it would go to the blue screen, spinning wheel for a couple of seconds and then log back in to my account (mine was the only account on the computer). I added another account and then after selecting shut down it would go to the log in screen. i could shut down from there but whenever i bought up a finder selection window ie: force quit, it would do the same as selcting shut down, and if i had other vital apps open, it would of course close all of those and go back to fresh l;ogin screen. I decided after doing searches and not really finding any information to re-install tiger. I hadnt really got vital details on the mac and i thought an upgrade to tiger rather than a fresh install and erase would keep all of my installations etc. Well having r-installed from the original cd 1, i come to installing cd 2. When it gets to the end of the install from disc 2 it says the installer will close in 20 seconds, if i leave it, it goes straight back to the initial install disc 2 screen and goes through the whole process again. If i put in disc 1 it rejects it and asks for disc 2. I am pretty stuck here and dont really want to lose any data i have. Is this common or been heard of before? What the cause be and how can i fix it? Thanks in advance....... |
What happens if you run Disk Utility from the Menu menu after booting from the installer DVD? Have you run the hardware test disk?
|
repaired permissions, nothing needed repairing. im at the install from disk 1 stage though, what should i do from here?
|
...Or how about walking to the nearest Apple Store and asking for a new one ? ;)
|
what? are you serious?
|

Also, run the hardware test disk. |
repaired disc, no repairs necerserry. i dont believe it came with a hardware test disc.
i should add that i say new, perhaps a month old and it had been working fine, so this error or lack of ability to shut down has occured, it was not like that when i bought it. |
bump. this is causing me loads of grief and any help would be really appreciated.
|
Can you boot from the hard drive? If so will the shutdown command work from the Terminal?
sudo shutdown -h now If it doesn't, are there any error messages? |
Problem with log out/shutdown on black macbook. Keeps re-logging in to account
it shuts down perfectly normally from the terminal using the sudo shutdown command. its only when i select shut down from the drop down menu or ask finder to close down any system window like force quit. it then logs my account out and logs back in again. is there a log i could glema some info from? this is obviously very annoying as if i get a system window and theres still some important open work (i use my computer primarily for music) it will lose my data.
i did a total re-installation of os x, and it was working fine. ive installed all the usual programs i would have istalled any other time vlc, azureus etc and it has started with the problem again. it must have something to do with an install somehow, but anyone know how i could find out which is causing the problem? it also does it on both accounts (if i add another account as im the only user), wont shut down without hard shut down or terminal command...... |
I'd suggest uninstalling all your 3rd-party software (or maybe it's easiest just to do another archive & install) and then seeing if the problem still exist.
Only install one thing at a time, checking to see if you can shutdown properly after each. |
i have a lot of plug ins authourized for pro tools (of which i still have all the licences of course) but it takes nearly 2 days to get everything back to a usable state again. does archive and install keep all of the necerserry files to use those plugs or will i have to do all of that again?
looking at the system log, i had menufela installed (as i only have a small macbook 13" screen) it was saying that menufela demon was crashing even though the app worked. ive installed it and all other haxies but could it be there are still traces of them left causing my problem? id only like to do the re-install as a very last resort as ive done it twice now already and as i said re-installing everything takes a really long time so if anyone has any other ideas? is there a way to tell whats making it boot back in to my account rather than logout by any of the logs?............ help |
can anyone help with this please?
|
Quote:
A) Reinstall and then add haxies one at a time until you find the guilty party, or B) Start removing haxies and see if the problem disappears. If you remove all haxies and the problem remains, you're going to be left with option A. |
all haxies are now removed but the problem persists. i really dont want to go through another install as its so time consuming. is there any other way to find out what might be causing this strange anomoly?
|
bumpity bump
|
can nayone help with this? after selecting shut down or restart it goes to the blue screen and then logs back into my account. the only way at the moment i can truly shut down is to use sudo shutdown command as listed above. is there a daemon that controls the shut down/restart process that could be the culprit?

The portion of system.log you showed does not seem to include the time when your system tried to shutdown - i.e. the problem that you were asking about.
|
well i streid to shut dow at thos times and thats what the system log says.
trying again gives me: system.log: Description: System events log Size: 404.04 KB Last Modified: 14/08/2007 22:41 Location: /var/log/system.log Recent Contents: ...
