One way privilege problem on network
I have a G5 Pmac and pismo g3 on a wireless/wire versalink modem/router hub. When on the G5 I cannot copy to the pismo, but I can copy from the pismo to the G5. When on the Pismo I cannot copy to the G5, but I can copy from the G5 to the pismo. The error message when I cannot copy (in both cases ) is:
The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items. The partitions involved are checked "Ignore ownership on this volume". Both computers run 10.4.10. Appreciate help. http://forums.macosxhints.com/images/icons/icon8.gif |
wacky problem with privileges
I have a G5 Pmac and pismo g3 on a wireless/wire versalink modem/router hub.
I cannot copy info to the networked computer, but I can copy from the networked computer. Examples: When on the G5 I cannot copy to the pismo, but I can copy from the pismo to the G5. When on the Pismo I cannot copy to the G5, but I can copy from the G5 to the pismo. The error message when I cannot copy (in both cases ) is: The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items. The partitions involved are checked "Ignore ownership on this volume". Both computers run 10.4.10. Appreciate help. |
Here is additional information about the problem. Here is the system Console Log when I mount the powerbook on the G5.
Jul 28 00:25:46 PMacG5 kernel[0]: AFP_VFS afpfs_mount: /Volumes/DATA 19GB, pid 1389 Jul 28 00:26:04 PMacG5 automount[264]: Cannot mount URL 'afp://sgPOWERBOOK.local.' for /Network/sgPOWERBOOK (UI not allowed). Explain Console Log of Network Problem
Can anyone explain this Console Log of my network problem? And then how to fix the problem which is that I can copy files from my powerbook to the G5, but not from the G5 to the powerbook. Thank you.

How connected? Ethernet straight cable, or through a router? FireWire? Airport?
In each machine's System Preferences/Network is there congruence of settings? In each machines System Preferences/Sharing is there congruence of settings? Whether we can interpret the log entries or not, we might be able to help you if you furnish more specific details. |
How (and when) do you mount the shared disks? (e.g. do you use "Connect to Server" from Finder's "Go" menu?)
And what users are trying to do the file sharing? Are they admin users? |

Answer questions
To answer questions.
1. I mount the partition by selecting Network in a finder window, then selecting the other computer. The passwords are automatically typed in. Then I choose the partition I want to mount. 2. The network is connected via a wireless modem/router/ethernet hub, the westell versalink 327w. The G5 is connected by wire, ethernet cable. The powerbook is connected to the network wireless via a sonnet (atrium) airport extreme card. 3. Not sure what you mean by congruence of settings on the machines. Here are some settings On G5 : powerbook differences in () Location Auto, Show Built in Ethernet (Airport) Tcp/ip settings= using dhcp, Do you need other numbers? Some different. pppoe= connect via pppoe checked , (not checked) appletalk= make appletalk active checked, (not checked) For Sharing: Personal File sharing is checked, firewall is off Hope this is the info you want. |
Try it this way
From the Finder hit CMD-K or from the Go menu, select "Connect to Server"
Type in afp://usernameofyou@ipadressoftargetmachine For example, afp://me@4.2.2.2 Does this work in a manner in any way different or more satisfying? |

And why do you have AppleTalk enabled? It is not usually needed unless you have a quite old printer. |
pppoe and apple talk
The verizon tech told me to use pppoe for my dsl connection. Just followed the directions. Should I uncheck it on the G5 and see if I'm still connected?
AppleTalk is checked because I have an ethernet printer hooked up to the network. Remember I have wireless modem/router/ethernet hub --one device. I could uncheck AppleTalk and use this printer as a Bonjour printer. This is a new printer, hp laserjet 3055, and I did not think that ethernet printers were old. I could use USB with this printer as well, but USB is not on the network. The powerbook may not be able to use the printer. USB is also not connected to the phone line. This printer can fax as well. |
Unchecked pppoe - everything works the same
Unchecked pppoe on G5. Didn't solve any problems.

The only device that should be "talking" directly to your ISP is your router. Your router should be getting an IP address from your ISP. None of your Macs should be getting an IP address from your ISP. |
The westell versalink router can be configured to do the PPPoe so your mac doesn't have to (I've got verizon and that's how I do it).
|
unchecked pppoe
Okay. I unchecked the pppoe box on both computers. Nothing has changed. The question now is how do I configure the router to supply the pppoe, if it is not already doing this. The Verizon tech set this up. I can access the router setup via the web by typing in the IP address of the router into my browser. What next? What am I looking to change?

2 Attachment(s)
There's a PPPoe setup page on the Westell setup pages

I checked configuration using your attachments. Everything is the same except in the VCI - PPPoE Settings
my DNS Primary and DNS Secondary values are 0.0.0.0 You have 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 respectively. Do I need to change things? |
You probably need to put in the IP addresses for the DNS servers that your ISP would have supplied to you.
|
dns server
My dns primary and secondary servers have the same IP according to my network profile. This is same IP of the router.
|
Sorry, forgot to mention that I used OpenDNS. I replaced the Verizon DHCP settings with those of OpenDNS. Supposedly is "safer, faster, smarter and more reliable way to navigate the Internet."
http://www.opendns.com/ Yours should work with the Verizon DNS info, or OpenDNS. Your choice. |
Something else is going on
None of the suggestions worked. I think there must be something corrupted somewhere rather that an improper network setting. How do I uncorrupt things?

When you connect 2 computers on a LAN(at home) via a ethernet hub, router, or modem/router you should not have to do anything except enable file sharing in Network Preferences. Isn't this correct?
An apple tech checked out one computer, the G3, and said that it worked just fine on the network. I imagine the other computer would check out fine as well. If I had an old ethernet hub or if I could just directly connect these computers via the ethernet port then I could rule out/in the my LAN Network settings. If I remember properly, this problem started when I installed 10.4 on the Pismo in Target Mode through the G5. ??? I have 2 sets of 10.4 disks which will not install directly to the Pismo. One set is for the G5, the other is for a g4 powerbook. |
I will guess that each of your Macs will test just fine on a network- by themselves. But, that's not the problem. The problem is both of your Macs do not successfully communicate to each other. Maybe the Westell does not provide good sharing capabilities between the ethernet and the wireless side - maybe some setting in the Westell.
Are you currently able to connect to the internet with _both_ Macs? If not, then something about the Westell setup may be out of whack, and you could do a complete reset of that, double-check with Verizon for all of your manual settings. Could also be your old wireless card in the Pismo doesn't support some part of the 10.4 networking protocols. Did the tech that checked that one try copying files while connected wirelessly? You may be able to see files, but not actually copy or move data. |
response
I just switched from a Westell to the newest Actiontec gateway. Same problem of course. I also have the problem whether I connect wireless or wired with the G3. The sonnet airport card is only one year old.
To answer other questions: I can connect to the internet great on either computer, wireless or wired on the G3. I can copy files to either computer. Just have to use the computer that needs the new files, because I can never copy from the used computer. It's a wacko problem maybe somehow related to 10.4 and the way I installed it. Did not have this problem when the G3 was running 10.3. Not ready to go back to 10.3; not ready to purchase a retail version of 10.4 to see if this makes a difference. I'm not sure what the apple tech did. He worked with the screen facing him, away from me. I'm sure he connected the powerbook to a new mac, not a g5. Hope he did not lie. Apple does that sometimes. Really need someone in my home to check out every little thing. |
I'm having the same problem too. When I use Finder -> Connect to Server, I got the error message in console:
Aug 6 16:14:21 MacBook automount[213]: Cannot mount URL 'smb://MSHOME;MB-VM' for /Network/Mshome/Mb-Vm (UI not allowed). Aug 6 16:14:21 MacBook automount[213]: Attempt to mount /Network/Mshome/Mb-Vm returned 1 (Operation not permitted) But, I can connect to the same server with Terminal smb command. and here is my smb.conf [global] guest account = unknown encrypt passwords = yes auth methods = guest opendirectory passdb backend = opendirectorysam guest printer admin = @admin, @staff server string = MacBook unix charset = UTF-8-MAC display charset = UTF-8-MAC dos charset = 437 use spnego = yes client ntlmv2 auth = no os level = 8 defer sharing violations = no vfs objects = darwin_acls brlm = yes workgroup = MSHOME ; Using the Computer Name to compute the NetBIOS name. Don't exactly understand what you mean by connecting via Terminal app. I can connect, but I can't copy files FROM the host computer (Is this called the server?) only TO the host computer. Does this terminal script fix the problem?
