Hotmail in Mac OS X mail?

I have the FREE version of hotmail, which is now windows live mail, but i do not want to upgrade, is there any way to use the FREE version of hotmail in Mac OS X Mail?

solipsism 07-14-2007 02:57 AM

HTTPMail Plug works for many but I hear it's based on how old your Hotmail account is. As I understand it, if your account is fairly new it won't work.

It's worth a shot, anyway:

hotmail.com

nothing more, nothing less...

kel101 07-14-2007 06:57 AM

ok i did that but now it says

"Could not connect to 'httpmail Account'
Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email" so does it want me to upgrade to windows live?

solipsism 07-14-2007 07:57 AM

Then you are out of luck, kel101.

You now have a couple options. You can pay for hotmail or I can send you a Gmail account request which will give you more space, security and none of this "pay for POP" bullcrap.

Sherman Homan 07-14-2007 08:52 AM

solipsism is right, the free version of Hotmail does not work by design. They want you to hit their web site to log in. Which is fine, or pay for the full version or go to gmail.

kel101 07-14-2007 10:00 AM

i have no experience of gmail, im guessing i have to change my email? and is there a way to import my contacts, thanks

solipsism 07-14-2007 10:11 AM

Hotmail will allow you to export your contacts to a CSV (comma separated values) file that should import into Gmail just fine.

Send me you email address in a private message and I'll send you an invite to Gmail.

appleman_design 07-14-2007 10:33 AM

i was going to do the same thing...

Photek 07-14-2007 04:44 PM

there are also a number of apps that will 'forward' your hotmail to gmail for you...

gmails great.... hotmails crap

when you set up gmail.... be sure to turn POP services on!

solipsism 07-14-2007 10:06 PM

Photek, what are these apps?

kel101 07-16-2007 03:50 PM

yeah photek what are these apps

they have been discussed a few time on these boards... but I have never used them...

here is one...

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7851/mail-forward

might be worth doing a search on this forum... there are others... some free

EDIT: here is a thread.... http://forums.macosxhints.com/showth...=forward+email
freemacpops might also be worth a look... but I didn't get on with it.

I'm trying to backup all 630 mails that are currently in my hotmail inbox. I have already migrated every single forum and website profile to my gmail address, and I intend to completely destroy my 10-year old hotmail account so I have as little connections with this "windoze live" thing as possible. I'll have to destroy my MSN account as well, because it's impossible to change your address once you've been suckered into hotmail, but I don't have a huge amount of contacts so re-adding them manually is feasible.

To archive my mailboxes, I have tried everything, including httpmail and Mail Forward. They all fail. httpmail says "Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email blah blah", and Mail Forward almost gets there but then the hotmail server disconnects. I'm afraid this is because I made the big mistake to 'upgrade' my hotmail account to a windoze live account, which seems to disable the possibility to access the mail externally, unless you pay for a subscription . Hotmail sucks so hard that I can't even download the source for single mails, so even if I would have the courage to download the most important mails manually, it's impossible anyway.

Unless someone knows a loophole to archive my mail anyway, I suppose I'll have to install that windoze live client on a PC and try to archive the most important mails there.
The morale of the story is: stay away from hotmail, and if you have an old account, don't even think of 'upgrading' it. Some day they'll force you to do it anyway, so backup your mails while you still can.

Does hotmail allow downloading of mail messages to a winbox using Outlook? If so, LittleMachines' OutlookToMac app might be able to then organize everything. Google it, and read if it'll help?

fyi/ffr, I’ve been using FreePOPs to access yahoo and hotmail; it works nicely for hotmail but recently stopped working for yahoo since yahoo has overhauled its interface.

Hotmail only allows that with the older accounts that haven't been moved to Windows Live yet.

I have managed to download all my hotmail messages into Thunderbird through an extension called "WebMail". For some reason it was able to access the 'upgraded' Windoze Live mailbox, while other programs couldn't...
Bye bye hotmail account! :D

Alex Yeh 09-13-2007 02:07 PM

I have since installed the new .lua scripts for hotmail and yahoo into FreePops.app/src/lua, and it works beautifully for both hotmail and yahoo.

Note, and I didn’t mention this before, you only get POP3 access - not SMTP.

httpmailplugin hotmail update

if you were able to download your hotmail mail to apple mail using httpmail plugin before the name change to windows live hotmail, but are now having problems, try changing outgoing mail server to: oe.hotmail.com instead. worked for me

Hot Mail in Mac Mail?

No problem with receiving e-mail - just type in pop3.live.com for the incoming pop-server. However, I still haven't been able to send hot mail messages through mac mail.
