SCSI burner on my quicksilver G4?
I need to know "if" its possible (with an adapter I guess) to use my Lacie burner with my G4? Since I already have it, I may as well utilize the burner when making backup/copies instead of eating of harddrive space - even if temporary.
Is there an adapter available? Am I wasting my time here? Thanks in advance! |
You can get an Adaptec SCSI card. I have the 2930 and works fine in OS X;

i too have a 2930U SCSI card that works fine with an external scanner, drive and an old lacie 2x2x4 burner.

Thanks people - I looks at the link info page & it seems good. Now, so I know what I'm in for - Is it as simple as opening my box, installing the card & software & update(s) ?? Will my G4 recognize the burner w/o problem? Will I have to reallocate a default burner (or will it keep my internal as default)? Will I be able to see it from OS9 classic apps? I am specically concerned that "ASTARTE CD-Copy 2.0.1e" will see it??? How much "tweeking" is required?
Thanks (again) in advance |
OS X has the drivers built in. there was a jumper on mine that for my old 7600 had to be on for the card to be used to boot from via external drive be it cdrom or hard drive. for the new machine i just removed it. it came with a little sheet explaining it. on for old machines off for new machines basically. as far as OS 9 running in OS X seeing it don't think there is a problem other than scanners. most scsi scanners don't work in OS X but will work if you boot into 9. hard drives shouldn't be an issue either. are you trying to burn via toast or cd-copy or via OS X. i would think if from OS X (the burning from the finder feature i mean) than it would depend if OS X supported the drive. from the other two apps, i would think there would be a problem there either. not positive but would expect a problem.

Ok - these are my concerns - As it goes now - my OLD toast version, which I can only run under 9 DOSEN'T see my internal G4 burner... I guess this will resolve when I have the 80.00 to get the new toast for X, huh? - If i get this card... will I be able to access it from the finder (in 10.2)? So, if I want.. I can use it as a reader to copy from and or rip - INSTEAD of using hard drive space to image and THEN burn - If I can use the older burner, I can avoid the COPY step as I did on my older power mac - you understand what I mean right?

yes, i have toast 5.2 and all is fine. i don't have my external burner but i have used it in the past and it was fine. will I be able to access it from the finder (in 10.2)? the card i would say yes. it is a matter of whether the finder sees the burner. here is a compatiblity page for itunes http://www.apple.com/itunes/compatibility/ there is one about which drives are supported for burning from the finder too but i can't find it. sorry. I can use it as a reader to copy from and or rip - INSTEAD of using hard drive space to image and THEN burn - If I can use the older burner, I can avoid the COPY step as I did on my older power mac - you understand what I mean right? so you want to use the g4 drive to read and the external burner to burn on the fly instead of making disc images and then burning. i hate having to do that also. i have a 933 and want to put a cdrom into the second bay but am not sure if it has to be a special size or kind because of the door issue. my aol is jldrummerguy |

Yes, or vice versa - its a waste of hard drive real estate - to copy / delete to the hardrive - especially if I HAVE another drive - I tried your AIM name - The forum says you're ONLINE but your not showing up in my ICHAT ??? as of 12:35pm EST 12/8/02. Thanks. |

>>vfrpilot, that's online in the FORUMS. You can also see this information on the front forum page at the bottom.<< Nosa, I know - I asked for the AIM identity & G4macuser replied: >>my aol is jldrummerguy<< Thats his "aol" - so it should work in Ichat - right?!?!?! Thanks! |
Yes, he just isn't on on AOL/iChat.

Anyone got any good links for SCSI Tutorilals?
I just put an UL2D in my Quicksilver 867 and want to make sure it's terminated correctly. I am also looking for benchmark and testing programs. Thanks! John |
i ended up getting an external firewire lacie CD-RW 8x burn, 24x read, not sure of the RW but that doesn't matter because now both of my drives burn at 8x. all i really needed was a drive to read at least at 8x but i ended up with a burner the is firewire bus powered and i can use it with my pismo too. very cool and small.

I can take my Yamaha burner and now have two burners-nice for dup'ing cd's. Don't you think? :-) John |
I bit the bullet & bought the card - 79.00 bucks, took me 5 minutes to install. It works fine with the older lacie burner. Now I can dup CDs without wasting HD real estate & when/if the burner does die - I utilize the card for.. maybe a HD.

Have and Adaptec 39160 SCSI controller in my Quicksilver. Don't have a burner but it works great with my two IBM 15K Ultrastar HDDs.

The IBM's are very fast and sound sweet when they spool up.
Got a great deal on the drives. $220 total for a 37Gb and an 18Gb. Both were sealed in their original static bag from the factory. Complete with silica moisture packets!! Got the 39160 for $330 open box at the local Micro Center. |

A guy I work with got the drives off uBid, he bought about a dozen drives total because the price was so good. The 37Gb was about $150 shipped and the 18Gb was $70 shipped.
