10.5 ?

When is 10.5 to be released?

cwtnospam 07-04-2007 09:32 AM

Some time in October.

DeltaMac 07-04-2007 09:33 AM

According to the Apple web site, Leopard (OS X 10.5) will be arriving this October.

if the iPhone is any clue, then 10.5 will be released at 6PM :)

r-sparks 07-04-2007 11:09 AM

Are they going to release separate 32 and 64-bit versions, or just a single unified DVD?

trevor 07-04-2007 11:25 AM

A single unified DVD.

Leopard will support both 32-bit and 64-bit apps. Same install. Should be completely transparent to the user.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/...ogy/64bit.html

The 'Unified installer' should refer to supporting both PPC and Intel Macs from the same installer.

Only Microsoft screws up transitions that way. Even in Tiger, parts are 32 bit and parts are 64, and both applications and users are unaffected.

pfhannan 09-12-2007 04:23 PM

Leopard

Does any one know when we will see Leopard? (OS 5)

Craig R. Arko 09-12-2007 04:27 PM

It's supposed to be in October. That's about as fine-grained as Apple has said so far.

schneb 09-12-2007 06:58 PM

Stop in your tracks and listen carefully. If you hear nothing, that is the time when something is about ready to pounce.

hayne 09-12-2007 07:08 PM

pfhannan:
Please do not keep asking the same question in different threads.
I have merged your recent thread with the one from July when you asked the same question. And I've moved it to the CoatRoom.

Note also that the people on these forums do not have any inside info on news from Apple - or if they do they aren't allowed to say anything publicly - so you would do as well just to go to the Apple site and see what is announced (or not) there. Or go to any of the various Apple rumour sites and read what they are guessing.
These forums are not for rumours.

On a Tuesday.

pfhannan 10-02-2007 03:52 PM

My apologies Hayne, its not easy getting old.

roncross@cox.net 10-02-2007 08:53 PM

Well it's October.

Felix_MC 10-02-2007 09:23 PM

Maybe it's the wrong year...

There is only one version. Only Microsoft releases separate 32 and 64 bit versions of their products.

roncross@cox.net 10-02-2007 10:09 PM

Let's hope it the right decade.

Well, it's not like it's a long time until 2010. Barely 3 years. It took MS 5 years to release Vista.. :p

I wonder what the next Mac OS X i going to be called. Probably something like Lion or another feline. So far they got Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger and Leopard.

roncross@cox.net 10-02-2007 11:14 PM

Yea, not to many big cats left with common names. They should have named them after dinosaurs. Not a bad idea considering how fast these OS'es go extinct.

Can you imagine, the next release is T Rex?

Interesting (?) link

That would get Apple through 10.7.

10.1 Cheetah - 10.2 Puma - 10.3 Panther - 10.4 Tiger - 10.5 Leopard - 10.6 Lynx??. How do you get to 7? Have I missed one? Was there a Jaguar?

The next one should be Pete Puma... "I got me a little rabbit in this hole."

10.0 Cheetah - 10.1 Puma - 10.2 Jaguar ;)

NovaScotian 10-03-2007 11:49 AM

Thanks, Craig;

Still doesn't get us to 10.7. With your correction, they are:

10.0 Cheetah, 10.1 Puma, 10.2 Jaguar, 10.3 Panther, 10.4 Tiger, 10.5 Leopard, 10.6 Lynx??

roncross@cox.net 10-03-2007 01:00 PM

Don't forget Cougar although some of the other cats mentioned can fit in this category. That's not important because we are only interested in the names of big cats so this one will suffice.

fazstp 10-03-2007 03:31 PM

Do hybrids count?

10.8 Liger

Actually where's Lion in this list?

Edit: Oh right

Ok, with Lion and Cougar, we are up to 10.8. I don't see Liger being used because it not a word most people are familiar with.

Pokemon is another good resource for names ;)

kel101 10-03-2007 06:01 PM

haha lol pokemon... good times, if they go for lion, it would be something like leo, are there any other animals that have cool names? dogs maybe? lol mac os 11 Yorkshire Terrier :)?

NovaScotian 10-03-2007 06:03 PM

Two more that come to mind beyond Lion are Caracal (basically an African Lynx) and the Bobcat, but at some point there'll be an OS X 11.0 with a new series of names.

Wouldn't that be OS XI?

Felix_MC 10-03-2007 06:42 PM

Lol, that if Apple knows it's roman numerals. It's still kinda annoying that some people say OS X as "OS X", instead of "OS Ten"
Wonder what names are they going to use for XI. Probably something cool like Roman Gods or what not :D
Though, probably by then, their computers will have holographic displays. :p

I also wonder what the next MS OS is going to be called. Though, following the vista pattern, it wont come out before 2011.

I don't think so, I think Apple will stop selling computers; they are giving themselves the time it takes to run out of names.:p

Felix_MC 10-03-2007 07:51 PM

Lol, and I guess then they are going to become a cereal company! Buy your apple shaped, apple tasting, Apple cereals today before they run out!

I'm one of those annoying users tht says OS "Ex" instead of OS "Ten." While I understand it is officially incorrect, it makes more sense.

X - Roman numeral for ten, which comes after (version) 9

X - As in Unix

X - As is NeXTSTEP

X - As in cross platform, running on PPC and x86 hardware (unofficially since inception)

Zap your computer with Mac OS X Pickachu!

(BTW, this is totally irrelevant, but this is my 100th post :D)
