I thought it only went to 9

So I open 'Software Update', and it tells me that I should install the latest Intel OSX update

10.4.10

I think this is a bit weird, but whatever, i'll download it and reap the invisible benefits...

Jay Carr 06-21-2007 04:17 AM

The real question is whether or not it goes to 11.

acme.mail.order 06-21-2007 08:15 AM

At some point Apple is just going to have to acknowledge that Leopard is more than just a slight enhancement over Cheetah (10.0) and release OSXI .

MAC GUY: ...the numbers all go to eleven. Look...right across the board.

PC GUY: Ahh...oh, I see....

MAC GUY: Eleven...eleven...eleven....

PC GUY: ...and most PCs go up to ten....

MAC GUY: Exactly.

PC GUY: Does that mean it's...faster? Is it any faster?

MAC GUY: Well, it's one faster, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most...most blokes, you know, will work at ten. You're on ten here...all the way up...all the way up....

PC GUY: Yeah....

MAC GUY: ...all the way up. You're on ten on your PC...where can you go from there? Where?

PC GUY: I don't know....

MAC GUY: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is if we need that extra...push over the cliff...you know what we do?

PC GUY: Put it up to eleven.

MAC GUY: Eleven. Exactly. One faster.

PC GUY: Why don't you just make ten faster and make ten be the top... number...and make that a little faster like 10.4.9.1?

MAC GUY: ...this will go to eleven.

Very good schneb!

cwtnospam 06-21-2007 05:49 PM

I think it should have gone to A, just to put a hex on the competition. :D

PC GUY: Yeah....

I can hear Pink Floyd’s "Dark Side of the Moon" playing in the background. And there’s a black light strobe on. Emitted from the Mac!? Yeah...

Am upgrading now, but I was under the impression that the OS would inform me if I needed to install any software updates? I didn't have any reminder or prompt that there was an OS update waiting for me. Is this right?

It could be your update interval. If it's set to check weekly, for instance, and it just checked two days ago, you wouldn't find out for another 5 days, the time of the next check. If it's set for daily checks, you should have been notified this morning.

Are you logged in as a standard user? Only administrators get the notice, and only when they're scheduled to check.

IIRC, in some jurisdictions you can still be burned at the stake (or at least flogged) for comments like that

I have no idea where the interval is set nor what it is set to. Perhaps I shall look into this and check. Thanks.

I have only the one user on my Macbook, which is me; and when I turn it on I am not asked for any username or password. Only when I undertake some Admin tasks such as installing new software or changing some preferences settings does the system ask me for the admin password which is..... hahaha, I'm not that daft! :)

Depends on how bad they are.

Anti 06-24-2007 10:23 PM

Greaaaaat. In the shiny future when we see 10.9, the next version up will probably be 10.10. Arrrrgh!

johngpt 07-04-2007 12:32 PM

I suppose my brain is decimal'd so that when I saw the 10.4.10 update being available I was surprised. My brain seemed to assume that under a decimal system, there would be no further updates after 10.4.9 until 10.5. Silly of me, I suppose. If Leopard is postponed further, we could continue 10.4 updates through 10.4.99 (or is that another decimal assumption I shouldn't make?).

I believe my assumptions have been decimated! :)

ThreeDee 07-04-2007 01:51 PM

10.4.10 v 1.1 was recently released for Intel Macs... Get it via Software Update.

tlarkin 07-04-2007 02:02 PM

I think they should use scientific notation for their next gen OS

OS 1.23 X 10^11

The problem with that assumption, is that a decimal system would never be using a second decimal point in the first place! Therefore there was a clue from the very beginning that we're not dealing with decimals.

Perhaps more than my assumptions have been decimated! :)

LOL, I totally pictured listening to this quote in an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice!

CAlvarez 07-06-2007 07:12 PM

I had one piece of software (from Apple no less!) which refused to install because I needed to have "10.4.7 or higher," and I had 10.4.10. Sheesh. It was easily fixed by hacking the installer script, but you'd think Apple themselves would get it right.

Lutin 07-07-2007 04:43 AM

What was the software?

Really? Isn't showing up on my MacBook Pro. Only the Audio update, which I didn't need but downloaded anyway.
