Oh Apple! What have you done!
Okay, I'm sure you've all just been dying to answer this question so here it is: How many applications do you own that start with the letter "i"? I put up a handy poll for your answer.
I have 18 personally, they are: iCal iChat iClip iDVD iFlash (Flash cards, for the uninformed) Image Capture (yup, counting regular I's) iMovie HD Internet Connect IP Broadcaster (never did figure out what this was for) iPhoto iPoker IPScanner iSync iTunes iTunes Alarm iWeb iWork '06 iZotope Anyone else want to comment on this? When it comes to most common first letter of an app, I think the "i"'s have it :D. |
...and yes, your polls do get a little weird each time...
|
Sadly, that will only encourage me! Ha Ha! Now look what you've done! I'm going to go about making polls on how many of your applications end with "r"!
He he...um...yeah, it's 5:00 in the morning here you see. I'm up waiting for the Monaco Grand Prix (because NASCAR isn't actually racing), so I'm a bit loopy and excited. Sorry :D. PS- As much as I hate anything that might actually help Alonso, I'm really pulling for Hamilton to get his first win. This would be quite the way to do it! |
I have 45, according to Spotlight.
That's counting things like Import Picture Applet and iMovie Getting Started.app and iexplore.exe (Windows 2000). |
Let's see...
MacWrite MacPaint MacDraw MacProject MacTerminal MacPascal MacinTalk MacTCP MacX MacDraft MacinTax MacChess MacAMP MacLink MacMAME MacHTTP MacPERL Hmmm, Magic 8-ball says history repeats itself. :D |
My limited knowledge of pre-2004 apple is infering that the "i" really has just replaced "mac" at the beginning of everything? How interesting...
And as a side note, did anyone else catch Monte Carlo? Wow, those McLarens really showed the rest of the field a thing or two. The only car they didn't lap was Massa's Ferrari! If only it had been Hamilton coming in first... |
A quick Finder search (Kind:Application, Name:Begins With:"i") reveals I have a lot of duplicates cluttering up my HD. Anyway, here's the results (removing the dups and OS 9 stuff):
iBZEdit iCab iCal iChat icns Browser (apple dev tools) Icon Composer (dev tools) IDLE (?) iDVD iEatBrainz Image Capture iMakeProfile iMovie HD InCrease Inkscape Input Method Hotkey Install Flash Player 8 OSX Installer Interface Builder (also dev tools) Internet Connect Internet Explorer (just in case i ever need it, not likely) IORegistryExplorer (i think from developer tools) IP Display (i made this one!) iPhoto iPhoto Librarian (script to manage multiple libraries) iSquint iSync iTunes iTunes-BPM iTunes-LAME |
12 in my main app folder, more scattered throughout subfolders that I won't count
iCal.app iChat.app iDVD.app iEatBrainz.app Image Capture.app iMovie.app Internet Connect.app Internet Explorer.app iPhoto.app iStumbler.app iSync.app iTunes.app |
iCal
Image Capture InCDius GH 2 info.xhead isteg isync itunes itunes publisher |
I just have to wonder if a moderator could edit my poll so that it says "weirder" instead of "weird" on that last choice... I think that's what I was being made fun of for earlier (with how tired I was, it was hard to tell.)
|
whats the difference between that, and say KDE?
kwrite kate konsole knetworkmanager koffice konquerer kcontrol kdcop kontact kmail kOrganizer kaddressbook kget Kdict KcolorEdit KPDF Kview Kolourpaint Kmix k3b konversation I could go on and on but I honestly would have to look all of them up but you get the idea. |
after five minutes of piddling with my machine, I've found that 'A' and 'M' are tied in the lead with 42 applications each (though there's a little bit of cheating there, since Microsoft Office stacks the deck for M), while 'Y' and 'Z' each show a dismal 0.
can anyone recommend any good apps that begin with Y or Z? I'm feeling sad for those letters. :( |
This thread makes me think of the intro to Crazy Train: "I...I....I..."

I, on another forum, just had a Linux user tell me he hates KDE because of how they name everything with a K. I honestly could care less of what its called as long as it works like it is suppose to. |
I'm partial to themes rather than a blanket prefix. Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, and Camino better names than iCal, iChat, iDVD. Some of the i names work great, like iTunes, iLife...but when it comes to corporate branding there's truly no limit.
|
Just for the record, I started the poll because I thought it was funny, not to make a point. I claim no responsibility for points made in this thread.
On a side note, one thing I'e noticed that weirds me out a bit are brand names that start with the "i" but are not made by apple. There's a company near here called iService, but it has nothing to do wit Apple, just the internet in general. I thought it as weird. |
I like the whole idea (no pun) of themes, whether with a letter at the front or as fat elvis said.
It gives more work to those in advertising and marketing, helping the economy. It gives us more stuff at which to poke fun. :) |
The First "i"
The first iAnything was the iMac. The "i" stood for "Internet" which fit that product's focus (as eMac was for Education). Problem is, you have "iDVD" which has NOTHING to do with the Internet. Nor many of the other i-offerings.
|
I thought 'i' was in 'I' as in 'me' as in 'personal' as in 'personal computer'?

I hate it.
