Airport Express - cannot connect to Internet

I just bought an Airport Express for my Macbook Pro 2.16 Intel Dual Core. I can not get an internet connection and here are my symptoms.

1. I can connect without issue via direct LAN connection with Ethernet
2. My DSL company uses DHCP to connect
3. The IP Address with ethernet connection is 58.110.215.118.
4. The IP Address from Airport Express is configured as 10.0.1.2, which differs from the router of 10.0.1.1. I have cleared many times with 'Renew DHCP Lease' and it doesnt change ip address.
5. I have Internet Sharing on, to share from ethernet and airport to en2 and en3 for Parallels.
6. When I use Airport Assistant-> Diagnostics, the 1st 3 buttons are green, but Internet and Server are yellow and it can not get a solid internet connection.
7. Internet Connect gives the status of Connected to my wireless network over ethernet.
8. Airport Utility shows full bars and connected flawlessly.

Everything appears to be working and setup properly, but i cant get a web connection.
Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks,
jeremy

Well, are you sure that your Airport Express is getting an IP address? Are you sure that either the Express is logging onto your ISP or some other device is?

From your short explanation it would seem that your ISP is providing you with an IP via DHCP. Have you asked them for a static IP? If you have then they may be looking for a specific Ethernet ID to match your IP and are seeing the Express instead.

That's just a couple of quick ideas. How about providing us with a complete breakdown of all the devices attached to your net and how, both before and after you attached the Express. Remember, the more information you give us the easier it is for us to fix it.

For most DSL ISPs, you need PPPoE to connect. Have you set up the Express to do that and turned it off on the macbook?

pdiddle 05-28-2007 11:22 PM

My DSL uses DHCP to connect, not PPoE. And the ethernet works perfectly w DHCP and assigns an ip address every time.
So when hooking up the airport express, I only have the ethernet cable going into it. Nothing else on the network.

The following settings are on my:
Base Station
Airport Tab
Channel - Automatic
Mode - 802.11b/g compatible
Base Station Options
Enable Ethernet Port
Enable SNMP Access
Enable Reote Configuration
Wireless Options
Multicast Rate = 2
Enable Interference robustness Checked
Transmitter Power = 100%
Internet Tab
Connect Using Ethernet
Configure Using DHCP
IP Address 58.110.205.182
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Router Address: 198.142.128.30
DNS Servers: NULL
WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic (Default)
Network Tab
Distribute IP Addresses CHECKED
Share a Single IP Address(Using DHCP and NAT) CHECKED
Use 10.0.1.1 addressing SELECTED

Airport Settings on my MacBook
TCP/IP TAB
IP Address: 10.0.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 10.0.1.1
Apple Talk TAB
Make AppleTalk Active is CHECKED

TEST
Under Network-> TCP/IP-> Assist Me -> Diagnostics
Airport, Airport Settings, Network Settings and ISP are all GREEN - This indicates that i get an IP address and a connection to my laptop
Internet and Server are Yellow and then turn RED on test fail - This indicates that it cannot connect out to the internet.

Could this be a DNS Server issue? It somehow cant translate any webpage addresses.

Thanks for the help!!!

Airport Express - Can Not Connect To Internet

I just moved apartments, got a new DSL service and now my airport express wont work w my MBP. The network is set up properly and when I use Diagnostics, it says 'i have a working internet connection, but it can not connect to www.apple.com'.

My ISP assigned a static IP address, which i set up properly in the airport express base station configuration. I do not have a separate router, instead I have the modem feeding directly into the AEx.

The console displays the following errors each time i go through diagnostics to try and connect.
Jan 22 12:13:19 users-computer /usr/sbin/AppleFileServer: AFPServer::AbnormalATListenerShutDown - clear listener
Jan 22 12:13:23 users-computer configd[44]: rtmsg: error writing to routing socket
Does anyone have any ideas on what the issue may be? I have gone through this forum but haven't seen a solution for this...

trevor 01-22-2008 01:12 AM

You mention not being able to connect to http://www.apple.com but can you try to connect to http://17.149.160.49 ? This is Apple's web page, except using it's IP address rather than it's domain name.

If that works, then you do indeed have a working internet connection, your only problem is that you don't have DNS (domain name service). Enter the IP addresses of two DNS Servers in System Preferences > Network > DNS Server: and that should fix the problem. You can use the DNS Servers provided by your ISP, or other public DNS servers on the web.

Trevor, i tried your advice and i can not connect directly to the ip address, so it must not be a problem with the DNS.
The exact error i was referring to (when running Apple Network Diagnostics) is:
Cannot find server
This computer appears to have a working internet connection, but cannot find "www.apple.com". You may have typed the address incorrectly.

Any ideas why it says it has a valid internet connection but it can't return a web page?

Las_Vegas 01-22-2008 05:56 AM

It sees its connection to the Airport Express, but beyond that, there appears to be nothing. Are you sure that your DSL service has provided you with a static address? Most don't. Can you connect to your DSL Modem/Router via Safari? The address would be the Gateway/Router address assigned to the Airport Express. Not the one the Airport Express sends out, but the one listed as that of the WAN connection.

AHunter3 01-22-2008 06:13 AM

a) If you plug your MacBook Pro directly into the DSL modem, and use the static IP address as your IP address, can you get online that way? If not, you need to call DSL tech support (have fun); sounds like you aren't getting signal to your apartment/house. But if that works... (the following is kind of basic and probably infantilizing in places but no offense intended & sometimes the basics are worth checking):

b) Swap the ethernet cable back to the Express Base Station. On your computer: Create a new "location" in Network Preferences. Under "Show", go to Network Port Configurations. Uncheck every single option except AirPort. Under "Show", go to AirPort. By default join: <pick your Base Station>. Click the checkbox "Show AirPort status in menu bar. Click "Options". If no recent networks are found, "Ask me before joining an open network". Under Show", go to TCP/IP. Configure IPv4: "Using DHCP". Hit "Apply Now". Close Network PrefsPane window. Go to the AirPort menubar widget and verify that AirPort is turned on. If you are not already joined to your own homemade home-named AirPort Express network, do so now. If you don't see it in the list, skip to step d. Try to go online. Can you Google? If so, you're fixed. If not...

c) Open Airport Admin Utility. Wait for a moment and your module should appear in the Select Base Station window. Select it and click Configure. If you password-protected it you will need to enter a password. (And if you didn't, you should do so, btw). Once you've entered your password (assuming it requires one), do you get an error message titled "Internet Connection Warning"? If so, the Base Station thinks nothing is plugged into its ethernet port. Check your cable. Moving right along (assuming that message did not appear or you fixed that problem and no more message):

AirPort tab: Wireless Mode should be "Create a Wireless Network (Home Router)"
..Name: a name that no one but you would ever use
..Channel: automatic
Internet tab: Connect Using: "PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)"
.. Account Name: <your account name for DSL>
.. Always Stay Connected: <checked>
.. WAN Ethernet Port: "Automatic"
Network tab: Distribute IP addresses
.. Share a single IP address (Using DHCP and NAT) using 10.0.1.1 <or> 192.168.1.1

If any of this necessitated making changes, the Update button will be enabled. Click it. The Base Station will restart. Once it reappears in the Select Base Station list, check your menubar AirPort widget and see if you are connected to the wireless network. If not, if it's in the list of available networks, connect to it now. If it does not appear in the list, skip to step e. If you're joined to the wireless network, try to go online now. If it fails, reconnect to your Base Station via the AirPort Admin Utility; click Wireless Options on the AirPort tab. click "Enable interference robustness" and OK and Update and try again.

d) Step D is if you never see your AirPort Express Base Station's wireless network in the list when you go to join it. Verify that you have AirPort turned on on your computer. Verify that the Base Station is plugged in and has some color of light on it (amber or green). How close are you to it? You aren't trying this from 8 rooms away, right? If you aren't troubleshooting while sitting next to it, do so. If you do not see the network, you probably won't be able to connect to the Base Station using the AirPort Admin Utility, either, but try it anyhow. (step c above). If you can't, you're beyond the range of stuff I know about, sorry. If you can, and did all that's listed in step c and still don't see your wireless network, you're also beyond the range of stuff I can advise you about.

e) Step E is if you can't connect to your Base Station using the AirPort Admin Utility. Verify that you have AirPort turned on on your computer. Verify that the Base Station is plugged in and has some color of light on it (amber or green). How close are you to it? You aren't trying this from 8 rooms away, right? If you aren't troubleshooting while sitting next to it, do so. OK, are you able to join your own wireless network from the Airport menubar widget? If you haven't done that yet, but are able to do so, do so then quit and relaunch AirPort Admin Utility. Give it a moment or two. Glance at the Base Station: do you have a colored light (amber or green, flashing or no)? If no light at all, verify that it's plugged in properly and the outliet's working. Yeah, OK, I'm in over my head here too. Go find a real tech support person. Mine always eventually connects.

AHUNTER3, thanks for the detailed analysis!!! I tried each of these things and still no luck.
1) The DSL works perfectly when plugged directly into MBP.
2) Should I be using PPPoE on the airport setup? I had previously set it up to manually specify the settings my ISP gave me. Although I do have an account name, i dont have a password and i do have a static ip address. I tried this anyways but it did not work.
Can someone confirm if I should be using manual settings for ip address/gateway/dns or PPPoE for a static IP address?

This is very bizarre...

AHunter3 01-22-2008 09:02 AM

I just came back in here thinking "Wait, I told that guy to set the Base Station to use PPPoE. But he has a static IP address!"

Hmm.

Like you, I would think the Base Station should be set to "Manuallly", the IP your provider gave you typed in at the top line, etc, everything just as you set it up on the MacBook Pro when you're using direct Ethernet connection, same mask and router address etc etc.

Meanwhile, you did switch from one "Location" to another in order to plug the MBP directly into the DSL modem? And switched from that to a "Just Airport" location to try to get online wirelessly? Obviously we're back to infantilizing questions, sorry.

OK, try this:

a) Using the AirPort Only "Location" and with your Base Station plugged into the Ethernet cable to your DSL modem, and your computer's AirPort turned on and you joined to the network (can you do that?), open Network Utility. Under Network Interface en1 (which should identify itself as your 802.11g) what IP address does it say you have right now?

b) Open Airport Admin Utility again, connect to your Base Station, and on the network tab switch from "Share a single IP address" to "Share a range of IP addresses (Using only DHCP)" and accept the default range. Update. When it becomes available rejoin your wireless network if it doesn't do so automatically. Relaunch Network Utility. What IP address does it say you have this time? See if that change made a difference in getting online.

pdiddle 01-22-2008 09:09 AM

Yes, I created a new location with only an Airport connection for the AEx, but when connected direct to the DSL I am using a separate location connecting via the 'Built-In Ethernet'.
I have the manual settings on Base Station exactly as it is in Network Config when MBP direct to DSL.

Airport Connection Problems

DID YOU GET YOUR WIRELESS CONNECTION TO WORK?

I am having a similar problem. I have a MacBook Pro with:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro 17"
Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP21.00A5.B07
SMC Version: 1.14f5
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87)
Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.2.2
Current Wireless Network: wireless network not available

My ethernet card connects to the internet via a cable modem using DHCP configuration method.

My Airport Extreme connected flawless at the (free) wireless network I usually connect to UNTIL I connected my mac to the cable isp. Now when I try to connect to the wireless network, I show that I am connected, but cannot access the internet.

I am a novice Mac user and need help! I don't know alot about networking so need someone who can explain things in simple, easy to understand terms.

Grateful for any assistance! :)

honestpuck 01-24-2008 12:35 PM

OK tlaingworth,

The more information you can give us the easier to solve your problem. From your short explanation it would seem that you used to connect to a wireless network then you configured your Mac to connect to your ISP via ethernet and a cable modem which broke your previous connection to the wireless net.

If this is the case then you need two "Locations". Create a new location called "Cable" and another called "Wireless". Make sure that the Cable location can connect you to your cable ISP. Now go to the wireless place and switch to the Wireless location then go through the suggested set up by the wireless provider. You can then switch from one software "Location" to the other when you move from place to place.

airport express cannot find PPOE host

I have just bought an airport express. I am trying to connect to the internet on my MacBook. when i plug my ethernet cable directly into my MacBook the internet works fine, but when i plug the ethernet cable into the airport express it can't connect, giving me messages saying it cannot find the PPOE server OR it thinks i must have typed in the www.apple.com address incorrectly. I have done everything you have advised 'pdiddle' - but it still won't work! any advice would be greatly appreciated!

airport express cannot connect to internet

Sorry, i did not give enough information to my previous post. I am trying to connect my MacBook to my Airport express. The internet works fine if i have the ethernet cable plugged directly into my computer, but not through Airport Express

here are my symptoms:

1. i usually connect to internet via PPOE
2. i have turned off PPOE in my network preferences on my MacBook
3. i have made sure to turn off my modem after each time i have changed my preferences or moved by ethernet cable from my computer to the airport express

Each time i try to connect to the internet via the Airport Express i get one of the following messages:

1. cannot find PPOE server
2. computer has working internet connection so i must have typed www.apple.com incorrectly.

Please Help!!

Still Can Not Connect...

I still can not get on, just got back from 2+ weeks vacation today so had to put my setup on hold.
I can connect perfectly fine via direct connection to internet, can connect to the base station as well, but can not connect to the internet via base station.
I have tried all suggestions listed above.
Manually specifying DHCP settings on base station w distributed IP addresses on client cpus (Sharing a single IP address). There is only a single client on the network. But I can not get to the internet. I still get the following error (when running Apple Network Diagnostics):

Cannot find server
This computer appears to have a working internet connection, but cannot find "www.apple.com". You may have typed the address incorrectly.

I do not know what else to do. Any other suggestions?
Is anyone willing to log into my cpu and view my settings and help troubleshoot? I would be willing to pay for your time if necessary.

Thanks in Advance.

As a sidenote, on Network Diagnostics, Airport, Airport Settings, Network Settings and ISP are all GREEN, but Internet and Server start out as YELLOW eventually failing the test and turning RED

If you ever find the answer, please let me know.

I have the EXACT same problem, PLUS if I boot using Bootcamp on my Vista partition, IT WORKS with Airport!! Also, if I go to an internet café with Wi-Fi spot, IT WORKS also!!

Cannot understand what's happening. I also resetted to factory my D-Link router and still no luck. I used to surf on the net with that EXACT same setup without any problem!

Had same problem - using BRIDGE mode solved my problem

Dear All -

I spent hours trying to fix the exact same problem on my MacBook:

DSL Modem - Hub - Wall Socket - Ethernet cable works just fine
Airport Express merrily flashing green once plugged into the same wall socket, yet no connection over wi-fi (all green except Internet and Server, yellow then red)
Plugging Express directly to the Modem bypassing the hub had no effect.

Now I am no expert but I figured the word BRIDGE sounded just right - all I needed is for the Express to act like a cordless ethernet extension cable.
So changing to Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode) worked like a charm.

Now, I was concerned that now that the words "Sharing" and "Off" were in teh same sentence I could only connect one wireless device at a time (sorry if I am saying something profoundly dumb right now) - but I have two MacBooks downloading updates simultaneously as I write this now - without any problems< and the Summary Page shows Wireless Clients: 2

Now, this sounds way too easy - could someone please tell me what exactly it is that I am NOT GETTING with this seemingly easy way out? Mail works fine, too. What's with this "base station NOT sharing a single IP with wireless clients using DHCP..." and acting like a bridge only?

Please clarify - the only other thing I would use this for which I haven't tested is SIP VoIP with my Nokia E51.

Tanks again - and pardon the my language (literally :) - I could do better in Russian :)

I am new here and not very computer savy. I have had my Mac for a couple years and love it. I got an airport express and hooked it up and it worked perfectly.I had internet through a cable modem. Well I moved and had to get a new cable modem through a different company. And I can't get my airport express to work now. My problem sounds like Pdiddle's problem. My first question is do I HAVE to have a static IP address? I called my internet company and they said they don't give them unless I have a business account and that I can get one assigned by the provider of my airport express which I guess means MAC. That confused the heck out of me. So before I ask any more can someone clarify the static IP thing for me? Thanks so much.

airport express network diagnostics

I have a brand new AE & MacBook. I CAN connect but must run through network diagnostics each time opening Safari. After screen of "cannot connect to internet," I am required to:

1)choose apple network
2)enter network password

Is this a security setting or malfunction?

THANX!

-----

This totally worked for me as well. Ipod touch and laptop 'saw' the airport express but would not connect to the internet. Happened all of a sudden after years of proper connection. Frustrating. But all it took was changing to Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode) using Airport Utility.

Thanks Slavasta! You saved me a big headache.
