Entourage - Error Message 1412

I've been using Entourage to access my Hotmail account without any issues for years.

Today for some reason it wont allow me to send any messages. I can receive them ok from my Hotmail account, but I can't send any.

I get an error message 1412 saying,

Error - Mail could not be sent using the account "Hotmail."

Explanation - HTTP error. The request cannot be fulfilled.

This has never happened before and I'm sure I have not done anything differently.

Please Help!!!!

Dave,

The exact same thing happened to me today too. And I am still getting the same error message. I sent an email to Hotmail Support and I have not heard back.

I am able to receive, but not to send. I'm very glad to know that it has happened to someone else, but it is very annoying. I read this on the Entourage Help Site (http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/...ml#error1412):

Error 1412

Error: Mail could not be sent using the account "Hotmail." Explanation: HTTP error. The request cannot be fulfilled Error: 1412

Hotmail has these rules:

Max 50 emails at a time
Max 100 mails in a 24 hour period

I doubt that either one of us has been sending that many emails. It makes me think that it is a problem on the Hotmail side. Please let me know if anything changes for you or if you are able to email.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,
Blake

probably just an error with hotmail.

uhhh...

does it work now?

davethesailor 04-03-2007 04:37 AM

Hi David,

I've just tried this again, 24 hours on and it's still not working. I've even tried re installing Hotmail onto Entourage, but that did not help.

Can anyone help?

Dave

I've seen this also and it's come back up after a short time.

davethesailor 04-03-2007 08:15 AM

Hi Blake,

In some ways its reassuring to know that it is not just me, although of course I am sorry that you have this problem also.

I too have emailed Hotmail support but have yet to get a response.
If anyone finds a solution to this, please post on here.

Many Thanks,

Dave

This was posted on the Microsoft Entourage newsgroup today.

From Hotmail support: "I have determined that the
Microsoft Entourage team can provide the next best solution to your
concern. However, if you can still send e-mail messages using your web
browser, I suggest that you access first your account there while
waiting for the response from Microsoft Entourage team."

I have forwarded this on to the MacBu developers.

I am also suffering from the same situation. As of 04-01-07, I have been unable to send email through Entourage. Today I sent numerous emails to MSN/Hotmail Technical Support (via the Hotmail system), and have spent hours trying to convey the problem to them. Hopefully, they will get the message and correct this situation.

Thanks,

Michael

I've had a terrible time getting any sensible response form hotmail. They just keep on sending automated responses that don't address the issue.

I really hope you get a better response Michael.

Thanks,

Dave

I too have been having the same problems. I'll keep checking back for an answer. Thank you for working so hard to solve this issue everyone.

Have you guys attempted updating your Office software through Microsoft? Current version of Entourage is 11.3.3 if you are on Office 2004

I'd start there.

davethesailor 04-04-2007 03:19 PM

OK,

I've got mine working. I was using Microsoft X however, today I updated to Microsoft 2004 (I had a copy through work)

I then went through all of the updates and tried sending an email. It worked!!

I would advise that anyone else with this problem tries updating their Entourage.

So far the word back is that the Hotmail team, has tracked it down to a limited Hotmail issue right now.

How much does a 2004 entourage program cost? do you have to buy all of office 2004? I have an earlier office program. My entourage is version 10.1.1 Is it easier? cheaper to change over to using the apple mail program. What are the advantages of each?

Could everyone having the problem clarify what version of Office they are running and what version? It's possible that it's just Office X and the lack of applying a DST fix. Office 2004 was updated with 11.3.3, but Office X had no official update. There was an unofficial workaround posted that users can download. http://www.entourage.mvps.org/articl...orkaround.html

Office X latest version 10.1.9
Office 2004 latest version 11.3.4

You can tell what version by looking at the Microsoft Component Plugin in the Office folder. http://www.entourage.mvps.org/versio...html#component

Lastly, Office X is now officially EOL. (end of life) and will receive no further updates.

Yesterday (04/03/07) I sent the following to http://support.msn.com for product "MSN HotMail Plus" (now ticket 1032849134):
============================================
On Mac OS 10.4.9 on G4 with Office X Entourage 10.1.6 SP1; For years problem-free, now 100% error starting yesterday upon sending, but no problem receiving mail, despite rebuild/compact;
"HTTP error. The request cannot be fulfilled" (1412)

I recently installed OfficeX-1019UpdateEN and sent several emails successfully before this error - same error above occurs on redundant Mac without this combo SP installed.
============================================
I received a reply today that I need to resubmit (just did) to:
https://support.microsoft.com/common...214&showpage=1

I suggest ALL us Office X users "vote" with similar support requests and overwhelm them (is this possible?). I can't believe MS would passively (or intentionally) allow something to disrupt ALL us users without fixing it (would they). I won't be forced into a Office 2004 upgrade on these terms (will I?)! Or are there some of you without this problem (why would you be browsing this thread?). What is common among those of us disabled?!?!?!

jcat 04-04-2007 08:59 PM

I have Microsoft Office X, version 10.1.2 and the Entourage version is 10.1.1. I had added all official updates as they became avaliable).

mhurst1975 04-05-2007 02:07 PM

DianeRoss, do you recommend taking the steps in your post

It looks feasible, I am wondering if you think it will solve this error 1412 "cannot send email using the account ___@hotmail.com" (still receiving incoming just fine.

I have entourage for os X 10.1.1 (2418)
I have Mac OS X 10.4.9 and this issue just started on or around April 1st for me.

jcat 04-05-2007 04:12 PM

I also can still recieve email on Entourage but can't send any out. My email account is also one at @hotmail.com. Is this another common link?
To repeat from above I have Microsoft Office X, version 10.1.2 and the Entourage version is 10.1.1

dianeross 04-05-2007 06:01 PM

You are way behind the times with your updates. Office X latest version 10.1.9. Turn on Auto update under Help in the Menu bar. Get the daylight saving time fix mentioned above.

Some users are using the Office 2004 test drive as a temporary fix.

You can download Demo here:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default...d=office2004td

mhurst1975 04-05-2007 09:35 PM

Thanks for the help but...

I have installed the 10.1.9 update and then carefully followed the daylight savings fix you reference above. (which basically consisted of replacing the "timezones" file in the microsoft office folder) to no avail.

Now Entourage is showing version 10.1.6 (040913) and I am still on OS 10.4.9.

Entourage - Error Message 1412

So delighted to find this site after three evenings wasted trying to sort out my Entourage with this 1412 error.

I have updated my Mac OX 10.3.9 to bring Entourage up to 10.1.6 (after uninstalling and reinstalling earlier) to no avail. Using normal Hotmail via Safari is a pain as I want my Entourage (which I love) back. No reply from support at all. Prior to everything going wrong I had an evening doing masses of deleting and sending and putting stuff in folders.

Might this have triggered the problem? Also the problem started with blank sections appearing in the Inbox then all unopened messages "cloning" thereby massively increasing the use of my memory. I could only delete one of each of the pairs of messages as the computer didn't seem to recognise there was still one copy there.

That's why I did the uninstall/reinstall having moved anything useful into folders (which still worked). If this HTTP error is caused by doing too many 'sends' in one session why does it not clear after a quiet period? Is there any other HTTP error triggered by too much use? If so, can we copy the fix for that in some way?

Any new ideas yet?

dianeross 04-06-2007 04:14 PM

I received this from Hotmail support:

We traced the issue back to a security-related change on the Hotmail servers, which unfortunately affects all Hotmail customers and is too critical to revert.

Entourage X users who do not upgrade to Entourage 2004 can try the following workarounds:
Receiving Mail: Move any messages in the Outbox to Drafts. Message retrieval works in some cases if no messages need to be sent.
Sending Mail: Send messages via a non-Hotmail account.

Sorry I don't have better news.

Runnin'Turtle 04-06-2007 11:21 PM

Per Microsoft News Server <microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage> http://www.entourage.mvps.org/suppor.../subnews.html;

I understand that on April Fools' Day, Microsoft implemented a security-related change to HotMail servers. While not intending to, it inadvertently disabled Office X Entourage for users with HotMail accounts.

Now I learn this mistake is not planned to be corrected, forcing Office X license holders and HotMail Plus subscribers to upgrade to Office 2004 in order to retain their HotMail/Entourage connection.

This is an outrage! It is a perfect example of the callous disregard for Macintosh customers that justly results in Microsoft's poor reputation. My sympathy to all the users who'll never know what happened and will never receive an apology.

This technical mediocrity is why we are still confined to planet Earth.

sofiawahaj 04-07-2007 12:25 AM

I'm having these same problems too (so relieved to find this site!). I have Entourage Version 10.1.4 and I tried updating and tried the timezone thing to no avail. I am considering opening a gmail account and getting all my hotmail through that account with the intention of forever leaving hotmail. Will Entourage work with gmail (I assume so)? I don't want to pay for Entourage 2004. Does anyone see a problem with my idea? Could this be a possible solution if msn isn't going to fix their problem? I hate changing email addresses, but if I can do it gradually, I can deal with that.

Runnin'Turtle 04-07-2007 12:21 PM

Please join me in sending a deluge of democratic outrage to Microsoft appealing for redress;

I understand from a MVPS, on April Fools Day a security-related change to HotMail servers accidentally disabled email sending (error 1412) from Mac Office X Entourage;
1) When will service restoration occur? If never, when will an acknowledgement (if intended) or an apology (if accidental) appear on http://support.microsoft.com?
2) As a faithful Office X Entourage license holder and paying HotMail Plus subscriber, what assurance can Microsoft give that other products will not be similarly disabled at end-of-life?
3) Is Microsoft aware that this scenario, if ignored, justly results in its poor reputation among Mac users?

abiglizard 04-17-2007 01:41 PM

I'm still in the dark since April 1st. Checking my msn plus and hotmail accounts via the web is a joke. I miss having my Entourage working. I was wondering if anyone who has gotten it working would publish their settings.

I got an email about a month ago saying MS was going to change from pop3.msn.com and smtp.email.msn.com to
pop3.live.com and smtp.live.com

the email didn't say anything about the new x509 root certificate security settings. see a copy of the email here:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/...2419&SiteID=17

Not finding anything out there (until today) where others people are having similar problems, I'm hoping to find out what the setting are for those of you who did get things working again. SSL authentication? with password or without? Override port 995? Or maybe a screen-shot

At first I was downloading my email, but could not send. Since I have started messing with things neither (sending mail or receiving mail) is working. I started with Entourage X then upgraded to Entourage 2004. 2004 has more options for type of connection with the mail server. I'm also running fully updated 10.4.9.

Along the threat of MS support. I've received 5 emails from 5 different people expressing how they understand how important it is to get my email up and working again, but no help. Not even a 'try this'. Basically, like some of the other posts they just suggested I use my web browser until they get back to me.

thanks
