Itunes 7.1.1 crashes G5 - can't fix
For several months now every time I open Itunes it crashes my system (with or without Ipod attached, doesn't matter). G5 dual 2.3, 3.5 gb ddr sdram, OSX 10.4.9. Itunes 7.1.1. I have updated OS and Itunes at least once since this prob. started. I have succeeded in getting Itunes to start bt trashing prefs and Itunes library and XML file and restarting machine. Problem is when I shut down Itunes and restart... crash! Also, if I trash library and do not rebuild, I can open and close app at will. As soon as I rebuild Library and restart... crash! Below is posted crash log. Strange thing is, the most recent date is 11/14/06. (?) Living without Itunes hurts. Please help! Thanks.

Wait.. the app (iTunes) crashes? Or the G5 "crashes" (kernel panics)?
|
G5 crashes, as in shuts down... off, dead. No kernal panic message though here is part 2 of crash log. Part 3 to follow (still too long)
Code:

Part 3... final
Code:

Then I don't think this crashlog will help us.
As you noted, it's from November, so unlikely to be relevant to this issue. So.. there's no kernel panic. Have you checked /Library/Logs/panic.log just in case? I believe the system log might be more relevant in this case, pre&post crash/reboot. Is your iTunes Library on another device, perhaps? Like an external HD? |
Library is on system drive. I don't have an instance of panic.log anywhere on my machine. Sorry... where can I find system log?
|
Ok... found system log...

Not sure how to get pre/post crash. I don't have an instance of panic.log. Library is on system drive.

Took me 24 hrs to get back online. I tried disablng contextual menu stuff. Not sure If I succeeded. Anyway, still crashing w/ Itunes start. Am going to post before and after system crash logs...

Also, disconnect all unneccesary peripherals, like your Digidesign stuff.
Again, does the problem continue from a newly-created user? Trevor |
Disconnected Digi002 and removed usb Ilock to no avail. Created new user account. 1st time I logged into it, system crashed. Restarted, successfully logged into new account. Started Itunes... crash.
|
....Anybody?
|
Yes, I had exactly the same problem. I spent 2 days trying to figure it out, even tried installing an older version of iTunes. Eventually, I found a thread on one of the smaller sites about the SRS iWOW plug-in causing crashes on iTunes. I removed the Plug In and I have not had a problem since.
Hope this helps. |
I see that you disconnected the Digi002. However, you may want to try to uninstall the Digi002's drivers and see if that helps.
Trevor |
Wow... two days, I wish! ;) No, I never insalled any Itunes plugs at all. Thanks, though.
Trevor, I can't uninstall Digi drivers, as this is a Pro Audio work station... it's primary function. All coexisted seemlessly for years until the 3 months ago that this started. I'm going to check out Digi boards to see if there are any similar probs. Question, though. Does that fact that Itunes functions without any songs at all (after deleting Library and not rebuilding) give a clue? Thanks again! NN. |
I'm not suggesting a permanent uninstallation of the Digi drivers, just a temporary uninstallation of those drivers to see if not having them makes the iTunes problem go away.
If it does, then 1. you know where the problem lies, and 2. you will be able to make a value judgement about what is more important--iTunes or Pro Tools. Trevor |
I hear ya. I will look at doing what you suggest hear. I have a post out on digi board too. Thanks again. I'll keep you posted. NN

i experience problems too with iTunes 7.1.1 and my G5 (1,6ghz) and OS X 10.4.
9 : itunes crash on startup and even when i force quit, it stays on the dock till reboot. My system is a fresh install with nothing too special and no plugin in itunes… Everything works well but this. |
Having the SAME problem, almost...
Hello everyone,
I'm new to this forum, but I saw this thread and I'm in DIRE need of assistance! I have a Macintosh Powerbook G4 1 Ghz, 512 RAM, OS 10.4.9 with all current updates installed. I was working on my iTunes Music Library when it froze solid. So, I had to restart the machine, since then (4 days ago) it will NOT boot into Mac OS 10! I've tried everything I can think of, including booting from my CD and going into my disk utility to see if it was a physical problem.. Here are some things that might help... 1. The Hard Drive is NOT mounted (and refuses to mount) 2. The drive is "journaled" 3. Cannot erase drive, won't let me do that either. 4. When I start in Verbose mode, it says things such as... 4a. "DigiIO has a funnel lock, Whoa Momma!!! 4b. Waiting for Digidesign Mbox 2 Configuration Service (does that for like 5 min.) 4c. Waiting for Apple File Service (another min.) 4d. Waiting for Apache Web Server (2 more min.) 5. Then it gets to where you THINK it will allow you to login but sits at blue screen with circle thing at the bottom for what seems like 10 min and does NOTHING afterwards... just sits there. I JUST bought this computer on Ebay and I love it, I need this bad boy running again! Can anyone help me? This computer is like my only stress relief and gateway to my family and friends as I'm not near home anymore. Thanks for all of the help anyone can lend!!! Also, is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again, say I do get it back up and booting? List of things I've tried... 1. Booting from CD. 2. Repair of HD (Came back "Hard Drive appears to be OK!") 3. Erase (error, wouldn't work) 4. Tried mounting HD like 10 times, no luck. 5. Tried Resetting the PRAM, didn't do anything. 6. Tried what I did the 1st time this happened... I waited like a day and tried it again and it booted right up with a quick PRAM reset... (That didn't work this time around) Thanks again everyone. I love Macs, I'm trying to get a job with Apple. I'm just new to the Mac OS X world, I don't know Unix, but I know Mac OS 7.5 through OS 9.1 completely inside and out it seems. |
Hi, not to be rude or anything, but I think you should start a new topic describing your problem. I'm not totally sure your problem is completely related to iTunes.
|
Ok, I'm sorry. I figured it might be considering it only happened BOTH times when I was using iTunes. I'll post it under "System", for anyone who wishes to help me. Sorry for the inconvienience.
