hang in there, Dave. As others have also reported, my CS2 apps are working fine on 10.4.9.
If re-installing 10.4.9 doesn't work, I'd suggest reinstalling the OS from scratch. While is sounds like a pain, it can be a great way to get a brand new Mac back. Removes slow-downs and other glitches that are hard to track down. |

Cheers, Tugger.
But the Mac IS new! Less than 3 months old, and a real killer machine. When it works, that is! I am really panicking now - do I really have to go back to one of my old G4s and wait for CS3....? ThreeBKK - downloaded & ran the combo OS update. Illustrator STILL crashes (crash log attached). But I may just be able to scrape by using the Beta of Phososhop CS3, which does at least run.... all I need now is an Illustrator fix. Interestingly, I tried to run the Terminal app (after reading more on the Fix-It page you supplied) and even that acts weird. All I get is about five pixels of Terminal menubar, whose window is unexpandable. I feel like I'm a beta tester for Apple AND Adobe right now. |
I would like to recommend SuperDuper! for situations like this. SuperDuper!
is backup software that offers what the author calls a "Sandbox" partition. A Sandbox is a bootable copy of your system, stored on another hard drive or partition, that shares your personal documents and data with the original. With SuperDuper!, you actually use the Sandbox as your startup volume. You can safely install any system updates, drivers or programs in the Sandbox, without worrying about what might happen to your system. If anything goes wrong, you can simply start up from the original system. SuperDuper! has preserved it in its original, pre-disaster state but all your new and changed personal documents are totally up to date. Within minutes, you're up and running again without having to go through a difficult and time-consuming restore process. Just a satisfied user. http://www.shirt-pocket.com/ |

And of course you don't have to go back to an older Mac. Just reinstall the OS. It's actually not that hard, nor does it take that long. Backup the docs. Then wipe the drive. Then reinstall Tiger from the discs. Then do all the Apple updates. You now have a brand new, clean system. Then, and only then, start adding in your 3rd-party applications. Each time you add them, do their individual updates. Then, add your Docs back in. Believe me: this process will eliminate all panic and frustration. You get a pristine system. Last step: once you've got this pristine system, follow dianeross's advice and back up to an external firewire drive, using SuperDuper. You'll then be golden. By the way, I do the above process about every 15 months. It's a full 6-hour process, and a lot of people would whine about that 6 hours. But when you make a 6-figure (or 5 or 4. whatever) income from this machine, it's a very healthy thing to do. Sounds like you make $$ from that Mac. These steps are a no-brainer then. |
Killed Mine Too.
MacBook Pro w/Core2Duo
Photoshop is dead. I get 10 dock bounces and then nothing. It definitely worked before the update. Also--I used the universal updater downloaded from Apple's site. I'd recommend skipping this update if Adobe stuff is important to you. There are numerous people reporting problems, and the update is just not worth taking the chance. Apple needs better QC. |
Me too
MacBook Pro w/Core 2 Duo as well here.
My CS2 (version 9.0.2) refuses to boot after the update as well. I downloaded the CS3 beta for now and was going to un-install and re-install CS2 tonight. I'll let you know how it goes. |

Well, I reluctantly slammed in the System disks & performed an Archive & Install. I didn't bother formatting the HDD first, in the hope that the new system would take care of the problem while leaving my precious apps untouched. Face it, I had nothing to lose! And - thankfully! - it did! I've left the previous system folder alone and am now quite happily using the antiquated 10.4.7....!
It's the first time that I've been caught out by an Apple update - and I am definitely going to wait & read all the posts here before I ever auto-update again. I guess that this problem only occurs in certain circumstances as (judging by the responses here) it seems pretty sporadic. But it should serve as a warning to us all. I think that Tugger's "it only takes 6 hours to reload everything" is wildly optimistic, though! I recently spent a whole week of evenings just using BootCamp and Parallels to build a virtual PC with all the non-Mac multimedia apps that I use. Let alone the time finding all the apps, plugins and extensions that I'd have to (a) find and (b) re-serialise for the Mac side of things. Today I'm going to buy SuperDuper! and try this Sandbox utility. But not before I archive my whole HDD somewhere safe..... |
Ps
Will be watching all the posts regarding the upcoming CS3 and Intel Macs with GREAT interest... before I even think about upgrading!

Ok then,
My Illustrator CS2 is also screwed. Brand new mac. 2 months old. Legit copy of creative suite. Downloaded the software update for 10.4.9. Anyone got any ideas? |
TheBlade -
Bad luck. There's no easy solution to the problem, but I found (as just reported above) that an "archive and install" got me out of trouble without having to reload all of my apps. Try it and report back..... |
Ok then, I think I've cracked it.
Go to Users >> (user name) >> Library >> Prefs >> delete the whole Illustrator CS2 settings folder rather than individual files within that folder. Re-launch Illustrator. This worked for me. |
STUNNING. That's a nifty workround.
Dunno about anyone else here, but I've always been wary of trashing too much Adobe stuff cos you can easily screw the registration if you go banzai. But this is such a good tip that I'm printing it out and keeping it! Cheers. Errr - is your Photoshop working ok....? |
work-around solved my problems
i was having the same problem with CS2 programs crashing after 10.4.9 update....I did the workaround and deleted my photoshop settings folder and now everything is back to normal....
thanks for that tip! |
Well, the nice thing is...after 10.5 comes out, we shouldn't have to worry too much. If a situation like this ever arises, just use Time Machine to go back to just before you did the update/install/mod etc.

I can clearly remember using something called Norton GoBack for the PC years and years ago, which did a similar thing to Time Machine. You could, for example, put the whole system folder in the trash, empty it, restart the machine - and still go back to a point where everything was serene and working fine. Roll on Leopard, eh? Can't come fast enough for me! I still haven't dared upgrade to 10.4.9 - and for the very first time in my life will ignore any future OS updates until 10.5 ships. And only then after a few weeks of checking this forum beforehand....! |
Yikes, CS2 CRASH!
I have a serious problem. After updating to OSX 10.4.7 yesterday, all my CS2 applications crash if I try to "open", "save" or "save as".
I have tried all the instructions I could find on adobes help site, nothing seems to work! My computer (imac Intel Core 2 Duo) is less than 3 months old, and fortunately I still have my old laptop. Has anyone talked to Apple or Adobe tech people about a similar problem? Help... |
CS3 Available
Well guys, CS3 is available and it costs a bomb!
