Mac OS 10.6 Predictions
Since 10.5 is about to be released, what do you think 10.6 will be like? Apple is probably running out of cat names. Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, and maybe Cougar?
|
My vote for the name is Abyssinian. They are really cool cats. I'm still waiting for Apple to take a step beyond iChat AV and go with iChat MT. Maybe that will show up in Abyssinian. MT stands for matter transport, by the way.
|
What I'm wondering is...What happens when we all have 10.9 in our hands, in the future? What next? Will we see OS 11, or OS 10.10?
If we saw the latter, I'd guess Apple would advertise it as "Apple reinvents the decimal system." Anyway...back to 10.6...I'm also thinking the same thing as ThreeDee. Apple is probably running out of cat names. And Apple needs to think up more features, as well. Leopard is a huge upgrade to Tiger (Spaces, Time Machine, etc.), but how long can Apple continue the innovation? |
Running out of cat names? Get serious, we haven't used Lion, Lynx, Cougar or Bobcat (might want to skip on that last one...) and that's what I just came up with off the top of my head!
I am hoping that with the advent of OSXI they'll start using primate names, that way we can have OSXI.2 Baboon, or OSXI.4 Gorilla. As for features in 10.6, I'm really hoping for some good toast, I figure my Mac does everything else, why can't it make me some good toast? But more seriously, I think I'd like to see a really sweet core graphics improvement so that we can see something on a parity with the DirectX line. I want games on my Mac someday (without having to dual boot windows.) |

Now that the feature set for 10.6 is settled, could somebody please start a 10.7 speculation post? |
Maybe they could feature some Australian wildlife for a change..
10.6 Dingo 10.6 Platypus 10.6 Echidna 10.6 Koala I like Dingo.. |

I think Jordan Hubbard's suggestion of feral tabby works well. Seriously, there's still quite a few wild cat species for naming, so no worries for a while. |

You know, they could always go with names of Fish. But only the cool ones like Shark, Marlin, or something. Definitely not Angel Fish or Seahorse though... That reminds of the worst joke I've ever heard. What do you call a fish that's missing an eye? |

Mac OS X Oncilla? Mac OS X Rusty-spotted cat? I don't think so. Another forum I sometimes visit was thinking of reptile names a long time ago (archived link). |
Um Ocelot! Awesome name, awesome cat. They are a bit on the smaller side of wild cats but they are extremely vicious when cornered.

OSX Garfield? How about OSX Caracal or Ocelot (gorgeous beasts!), Iriomote, Margay. And then, of course, you have the more exotic Serval (the new Enterprise-level OSX?), the diminutive Colocolo and Kodkod (perhaps not ideal names). Top of my list are Lynx and Ocelot. If they’re gonna use Lion, it should be the last of the series. |
Plus there are dead cats too, like sabertooth, here is a list of a lot of great cats

Next OS Name

Scratchy
It will contain Quicktime 8 that will run and export any format known. It will have speech and handwriting recognition down to a fine science. It will run PC games natively. |
Seems like most of the recent names are from the genus Panthera. Perhaps the 10.x line will stop at 10.5 and move on to 11?

I'd like to see Mac OS X Hobbes. And maybe a Calvin version too.

Does it bug anyone else that all the OSX's thus far are named after muscular sly animals that could probably kill you in a heartbeat?

well then there could also be this version of OS X

Frankly all I would want them to do is to put more stuff in so the average user can just use his computer right away without needing more downloads/buy more software.
The only thing really good about Leopard is the time thing and I'm not sure I'm going to use it all that much. Spaces is cute but we've seen this within windows graphics drivers in the past, nothing new to the OS. What I would enjoy a lot: - Integrated solution to move DVDs to front row and the iPod(handbrake, lostify, divx codec) - Make neooffice part of the OS - Something like super-duper - Include an archiver that can deal with passwords that's pretty much it for me. |

Way Way off topic...This is my 59th Post! I have no idea why I'm mentioning this, but it's true.

Hope 3D's right about TextEdit support for odt.
ThreeDee,
We just started using OOo to do .doc and .xls (.ods) analogues on our C2DPro. Works great and fast too! Say bye-bye to M$! We use TE a lot for spell checking large scanned texts. Soon we'll be trying to export HTML, for first time, from TE to web. If we could do that with OOo formats that would be useful. (Yes, we realize OOo exports HTML...) eValuone. |
Actually, lion should have already been used, because tigers are the biggest of the pantheras.
And, since we've already used Puma, we can't use Cougar; they're the same thing. |

You do know that office 2007 totally changed the format structure of their documents right? They are all XML documents now, and have an x at the end of the file extension. So a word document looks like this now, documentname.docx. Adding in this feature will basically make a lot of third party stuff completely compatible with office considering just about everything supports XML. |

Good Kitty: Bad Kitty
I love how all the OS 10.6 predictions center around the name of the product, rather than any of it's actual features. I suppose that speaks to how happy most OS X users already are. Can you honestly see this happening on a Windows forum? (Windows: Lonestar? Windows: Dairy State? Windows: Pacific Rim?)
Anyway, though I can't think of any new features myself, my vote is for Cougar. Whatever cat (or bird, or fish, or amoeba) they pick, I'm certain it won't be Lynx. I dunno if anyone's noticed, but "Lynx" (links) the cat is spelt identically to "Lynx" (linix) the operating system. It would be pretty much like releasing Mac OS X: Vista. Confusing much? |
Haha, 10.6 Couger would try to pick up on young Mac users. Or maybe it they should wait til 10.9 for Couger :)

Come on, Lynx would have to be the most badass name out there for 10.6. But maybe Apple will ditch X at 10.5? Seeing as some of their products never made it that far (Mac OS 9.2 is as far as the 9 series got).

There's a really weird animal that has a hilarious name (it's not a cat, but just think about this).
Mac OSX 10.6 DikDik It's actually called a "Kirk's DikDik," but who cares? |
Mac OS X 10.6 Lion
|
Mac OSX 10.6 PumaMACH2
|
i think they should name it something unique and totally unexpected, like Mac OS Popcorn
|
i think it would be something like 10.6 leo,
|
Back to the original question. I hope to see Mac OS with the option to choose the features you want to install. So I could have just OS without features. I am so tired trashing stuff I do not need every time I install OS X.
|
Many people have speculated why the various incarnations of OS X are named after wild cats. Here's my thoughts:
Wild cats are predators. Apple is chasing Microsoft in the OS market. They want to catch MS and kill them (well, have a greater market share at least!). Furthermore, there is a certain grace and elegance associated with cats. Maybe I've been involved in too many psychology-based discussions lately, but the connotations which arise from the use of the wild cat names must have some effect. Anyway, my 10.6 name prediction? Sphynx - a rather unique cat indeed. And looking further ahead than 10.6, I foresee Apple using birds of prey, to symbolise the fact that they have soared above the competition, and are still a threat. |

Funny, I'm thinking of pulling the same trick :). Anyone want to bet on some new features?
@Felix -- we just really like teasing you. |
Well, "Cheetah" doesn't ring terribly well, IMO, and "Puma" is too close to Panther...
I might have a few quid on "OS X Lynx", if anyone is running a book. OK, a much smaller cat, but the names so far do not indicate a size theme. OS X Wildcat has a certain ring to it.... I mean, Caracal, Serval and Ocelot just don't do it for me.:) |

I'm sorta bringing this off-topic again, but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felidae I'm guessing it's gonna be either cougar, lion, or maybe even lynx. The rest of the cat names don't sound 'good'. Unless Apple decides to go a completely different route and jump directly to OS 11... |

How about going off on a mesoamerican tangent?
OSXI - Mixtec I guess using the big cats has the advantage of no legal representation over the use of their names. |
Since we are throwing down bets, I'll put mine on Lynx. It just rolls off the tongue nicely.
|
I'm holding out for a friendly, multi-colored, loving, low maintenance "Calico" ... they're predators, too, you know. But the smart money says Lynx.

I say OSX 10.6 Should be House / Tabby / Feral Cat. That would be awesome if they brought back the old iMovie style. Or maybe Steve will get high again and skip 10.6 and go to 10.7 like iLife '06/'08..... No one knows...
|
How about 10.6 Draco?
Lynx is a constellation too. that reminds me...
How about constellation names? 10.6 Draco 10.6 Auriga 10.6 Centaurus  |
It is snow Leopard, you can pay up when you can, but if not by two weeks my buddies will kindly pay you a friendly face to face visit:cool::D
