SmartMedia Reader under OS X
Has anyone located a SmartMedia reader (or driver) that works under OS X? I am beginning to get tired of booting into OS 9 every time I want to download pictures from my digital camera...
I'm currently running 10.1.2, and currently have a SanDisk Imagemate card reader... Thanks! |
Have you been to the Sandisk website? I found some drivers there, but unfortunately they didn't have OS X drivers for my particular model :( They may have some for yours.
Other than that, wasn't there a USB cable to connect the camera directly to your Mac? It will work like that. Sure, it uses battery power, but probably less energy and time than it takes to boot back into OS 9 :) |
Did you already try your reader? Mine is working without any problems... It is a 5-in-1 USB Reader (Noname).
Regards, Gerd |
Unfortunatly no luck - SanDisk doesn't support OS X for this device...
Anyone know of a reader that has OS X drivers? Does it work under 10.1.2, or does it require 10.2? |
Unfortunately, you didn't mention what kind of machine you got... I got a PowerBook and recently bought a PC-Card-SmartMedia Adapter, works great.
The huge advantage PC-Cards got is that they don't require drivers at all -- so, if you have a PowerBook... |

Imagemate
I recently bought a Sandisk Imagemate. It worked right out of box on all my machines (iMac, Tibook)
|
Which ImageMate did you buy? My SanDisk Part No. is SDDR-09.
|
the older sandisk readers dont work --- the newer one does ---
They are like 20$ ---- go buy a new one and sell your old one on ebay |
Sandisk dual reader. Model # SDDR-75.

Surely once a driver has been written for something, it should be a small matter of effort to change it to work for a different version? Damn companies. They drop support for something the moment a new OS comes out!!! Grrr. |
I just bought a Lead Data (AKA GQ) Compact Flash/SmartMedia/Microdrive
reader/writer from Fry's for $14.95 and it works without drivers on Jaguar. Model number CSU-LA1 (Normal price $29.95 or so). |
Unfortunately, Britain doesn't have a Fry's and import costs are too high :( That's "Rip-off Britain" for you!
Response from Sandisk about the SDDR-09: Unfortunately that model has been discontinued for some time and will not be supported on any version of OSX We have newer models that are native to OS 10.1.2 and up, you just plug them in --- Great. Must buy a new one then :( |
Anyone has OSX drivers for the firewire Fujifilm DM-R1?
Does exist a generic one? TIA |
Kodak has three card readers that work great under X, at least X.1.5, that is all i have. The great thing is that you do not need any software for them. they have a mmc/sd reader and a CF reader and a multicard card reader that will read mmc/sd/sm/cf all in one device and it is pretty small given the three slots that can all be used at once, translation you can use three cards in the reader at the same time.

Kodak reader - unsupported in OSX - Beware!
We have a Kodak Card Reader here - the little spade shaped one that reads Kodak cards. After upgrading from 9.2 to OS X Panther, the cards do not mount on the desktop. We have to boot into 9 to get the pics from it. Interstingly, if we start Classic under Panther, and then insert a card, we get a "Disk is ready to ejected" OS 9 message (small yellow alert box).
I checked out the compatiblity grid at the iPhoto support site - and it isn't in it. Stupid me. So it's over to Smalldog to get a supported reader. Sounds like it might have worked in 10.1, but Jag and Panther users should beware. Sux for us to have a reader that isn't supported; especially given that it's from a major vendor. Tony |
I have the one that you are talking about, but i keep it with my laptop so i dont use it much. i will give it a test and let you know. in the mean time check your finder prefs and make sure that the removable media is set to show on the desktop.
|
Thanks Jeff
Thanks for giving that a try!
Preferences checked. The card doesn't show up on the desktop, finder windows, save/open dialogs, nuthin. Tony |
I have X.3.2 on my dual g4 and my g3 ibook and both are seeing all my card readers fine. i have two of the kodak 3 card card readers (the black one with silver letters) hooked up to my g4 and both work fine even at the same time. i have a MMC/SD and CF readers from kodak (once again the black ones with silver letters, but only one card slot each) and both of these work fine and are seen on my ibook. They instantly mount the icon on the desktop and are seen in the ASP. Kodak did have a cream colored one with a greyish plastic part on the top of it and said kodak in red letters. that one i dont think works in os X no matter what the flavor. I call this one the star trek reader because it looks like the comm badges they wear. is your reader plugged directly into the computer and not going through a usb hub? is it plugged into a usb 1.1 slot? are there any bent or missing pins inside the slot on the reader? or slotted holes on the card? hope this helps.
|
oh yeah for a bit more detail ...
i used to have two of the star trek readers but when i went to OS X.0 they would not work so i gave them to my dad to use on his 6500 and got the black ones with the silver letters. |
perfect jeffo thanks
I have the grey one, which I know now is unsupported. I'll shop now for the black one and ebay the old. Thanks!
