how to read an MS Works file on OS X?
I made a file in M$ works word processor and i can't get my Mac to recognise it!:mad::mad:
I have tried Mail, TextEdit and NeoOffice. NeoOffice won't recognise it as a Word file, despite Word apparently being able to open works files. Somebody PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!!!, I don't want to end up having to ask my Dad if i can use his PC to do this as that would be surendering to him (he thinks that i am daft in buying a Mac):( All i want to do is print this stupid thing!, it is my timetable for school and i *kind-of* ruined my last one;) PS: It is a '.wps' file. |
not too helpful, but next time, see if MSWorks will let you "Save As..." something like RTF
|
Oh well!
i guess i will just have to go on the PC without yelling at it (it runs windows, you see?) and open the file, save as... a .doc file and if windows will let me do that: A)i will jump for joy as that will be the first time windows does what i want it to. B)i will think about what i will do later because if A) does actually happen i will probably fall off my chair before i get a chance to jump for joy! |
A couple things to try:
Try making a copy of the file and just changing the extension to .txt or .doc Perhaps the file format is close enough that this could work. Take a look at FileJuicer. It can get the content out of the file supposedly. MacLinkPlus is also available but it costs and I don't see a trial download. |
my dad used Works, and sends me files all the time... if you open them in TextEdit, the first 20 lines or so are garbled text, the rest is fine and can be used.
|
I tried FileJuicer but it didn't work.
The file contains a chart of my timetable, i think that's what is not getting read. |
If you want to post it or send it to me via email, I'll sic MacLink Plus on it and send or post the results back for you.

Does M$ office trial let you print?

Here's the file: (by-the-way, the original file extension was ".wps")
|
Would you post it in its original format/condition, please (with the right file extension)? It won't download properly with a phony .txt file extension.

Is this what you were trying to get out of it?
|
I can't post it in it's original condition, the file extension isn't on the list of compatible file extensions so i changed the file extension to ".txt".
Download the file and change it's extension to ".wps" and it will be exactly the same as the copy i have on my Mac. I posted it so that AHunter3 could put it through Maclink PLus, he said here: Quote:
That's the data that was in the file, but it was arranged in a table format, as opposed to text format. |

How's this?
|
No, it's not what i wanted either, it's just text as well, i need it to be in table format.
|
Can you zip the sucker and THEN post it?
When you fake a ".txt" file extension, it downloads as 7-bit ASCII with line after line of Quote:
Substituting a ".wps" extension on the end after downloading doesn't fix the problem in any shape way or form. |
I'll try it as a ".wps" attachment...
No, it won't accept a ".wps" file. Will one of these extensions: bmp cwk doc gif jpe jpeg jpg log pdf png sh zip be useable without it altering the file? |

OK, I took the text file that OTHER folks had posted for you (and I have NO idea how they got that...), and opened it in FileMaker then exported it to Excel. I assume you have Excel or OpenOffice or NeoOffice, and can read an Excel file? (If not, specify a format in which you can read table data?)

By the way, AHunter3, I just took the text file that Daniel C provided and transposed (sort of) it in a NeoOffice spreadsheet. |
Thats great, AHunter3!
Thanks all! I wil be fine if i can't do this but it would be great if i could so... Does anybody know of a way that you can rotate info in NeoOffice Calc? The original had the M,T,W,T,F down the left-hand-side and the data coming accross from left-to-right I know that you are a bit dissapointed that i won't just say "Thanks" and leave you alone but i promise that i will be happy once this is sorted! |
Open AHunter3's spreadsheet, then Select the cells (select all won't work), Copy, Paste Special: Transpose.
|
Try using OpenOffice...its free and its fully compatible with M$ Office (you get a full suite)
|
Thanks! That's exactly what i was wanting:):):):):):)
By the way, in reply to cjs737: I already use NeoOffice. |
