Joining avi/mpg files

So I got 8 mpg files of 50MB each and want to join them to make single file.

Tried Mediapipe - didn't understand it. Tried Split&Concat 2.5 - didn't work.

Is there any other glue I can use?

Cheers.

I use 'mpgtxwrap' for mpg's and it works flawlessly, but only for mpg's. (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10702)

For Avi's I use the tools section of 'D-Vision.' (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8825)

both are free!

Quicktime Pro also joins most files (copy and paste them together) but its not free... it is cheap though!

Bitzomondo 02-02-2007 06:59 AM

Thanks Photek but still no luck.

mpgtxwrap does not install (something wrong with actual installer file) and D-vision does not stitch together the avi files I have.

If you have any other option I sure appreciate it. Cheers.

do you know if any odd codecs have been used on the files?

can you play them in Quicktime? or just VLC?

There are a few generic file joining utilities that might be worth a go.. try this... http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15404... it may leave the file extension off the end of the newly created file... in which case... stick it back on and you should be fine...

have you tried both the versions of mpgtxwrap...? http://www.biermann.org/philipp/mpegcut/

Bitzomondo 02-02-2007 07:33 AM

i don't know about codec. I can't play them neither in Quicktime nor in VLC.
But they are approx. 150MB in size each.

The files from the 2 links provided do not work.

Nevermind. The avi files are not that important. Thanks.

Photek 02-02-2007 08:04 AM

what app can you play the files in?

what is the extension of the files?

.mpg
.mpg001
.mpg.rar

or other?

here is the carnator link.... http://frozenheads.com/page/catenator

Bitzomondo 02-02-2007 09:16 AM

Only the 1st clip out of 3 plays in VLC in its entirity. Other 2 clips do not play in any app and give Quicktime Error cannot open movie message.

Original files have .avi.001, .avi.002, .avi.003 extension for some reason. I removed the 001-3 and kept the .avi during the processes we went through (in any case even when I used the clips with the 00x extensions, still no luck.

Catenator

Dropped the files in Catenator and resulting file was 280MB (sorry-original clips are approx 90MB each). Meaning that all 3 files merged into one.

When I played the merged file in VLC it only shows the contents, and has the duration of, the first cip (i.e. .avi.001).

Seems to me the 2 clips are faulty. They where posted on the internet and I downloaded them twice. So they are not reliable.

AHA!

your file has been split with hjsplit, you need to re-join it with hjsplit!

its a 'java' application.... down load the .jar file here......http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/#java (the 137kb one)

open it, select join, select chunk 001 (make sure the other chunks are with it), hit join and it will stitch the movie into 1 chunk for you!

I use it all the time, it works great!.....

Bitzomondo 02-05-2007 05:50 AM

AHA! And so it is!

I am sorry but the darn files still don't stitch together. I stil get the 280MB final file size but only the contents of the first clip. Only thing I can think of is the original files are faulty (I even tried to 'fix' them using ffmpegX and D-Vision).

Thanks, at leat I got the new hjsplit jave application.

EDIT: It worked! Files joined successfully. I re-DL the files as Photek suggested because my tampering with probably caused the file to join and play incorectly.

How I do it

Install Perian for quicktime.(so you can play almost any video file format from within quicktime)

Example with 2 movies:

Open both movie files in quicktime.
Select all of movie 2 and copy
In movie 1 move the play head to the end of the file and paste.
Done.

Hope it helps. :)

Use "Addmovie" it is a freeware (only exception is .rmvb files don't work here)

Photek 12-23-2007 06:26 PM

mitstoshi & rydogg..

at the risk of being picky........this is NOT the solution to Bitzomondo's question (which was resolved 10 months ago)

Your solutions WILL work with ordinary movie files.... but NOT with ones that have been split in this particular way. For files with .001, .002, .003 you need a utility like AJoiner...

http://www.digicowsoftware.com/detail?_app=AJoiner

Quicktime and VLC will play the first file in the sequence... but not the subsequent ones... :D

Photek, Any software for joining .rmvb files?

mate... I wish.

I cant even find a way to convert them to a useful format... in order for me to join them!.... well... except for those video screen capture utilities...

Thank you!

Hi Photek, thanks a ton for this post, you put an end to my suffering. Everything works splendidly... I finally was able to join my files and watch them as movies. You are great, man.

thanks & welcome to the forum.. :D

since that post I have discovered AJoiner for joining joining .001 files and RARExpander for joining multiple .rar files.... both are free and worth a look

Joining avi files with alternative split extensions

Hi Photek,
I am following this thread because recently I encountered split avi files with what appear to be (to me) unconventional file extensions, i.e., instead of "filename.avi.001; filename.avi.002; filename.avi.003" as described above, these files are rendered as "filename.avi.__a; filename.avi__b; filename.avi__c;" and so on.

I've had a lot of success with several of the free utilities that are around to join split movie files if extensions are in the .001, .002, .003 format (they are HJSplit; 7zX; Zipeg; StuffIt Expander; BetterZip; iArchiver (note, I actually paid to license iArchiver, and my BetterZip is a trail version). Some of these utilities have dual functionality as archivers/unarchivers and will expand .rar and .zip archives, very helpful if anyone comes across "filename.avi.zip.001"). Helpful as they are, none of them can handle the "avi.__a; avi.__b; avi.__c" split file extensions. Each one chokes then aborts its task.

Are you familiar with this? As you mentioned earlier here, I'm guessing the answer lies in finding out which software split up the files I now want to join.

Thanks very much for any help or advice you can give.

FFSJ for MAC OS X

So it appears the split files I have (ie filename.avi.__a; .__b; .__c, etc.) were split using FFSJ (Fast File Splitter and Joiner) utility.

Does anyone know if there is a version of FFSJ for the MAC OS X? Searching for it in Google turns up a lot of dead ends and misleads.

Thanks

filename.avi.__a is *not* the same as filename.avi.001

I, too, had a folder with these truly weird file endings. A few months ago I also googled this and concluded that it was indeed FFSJ. After much searching, I ended up trashing the folder... no solution w/o a PC.

Tonight, I have the same thing again. I would have expected that some Unix solution would have been found by now. And I have *all* the file joiner/splitter applications that I need (apart from .__a) that run on OS 10.5. I feel your pain ; )

2 Tools

If you're a usenet user, these two programs are essential:

Split and Concat (free) http://www.xs4all.nl/~loekjehe/Split&Concat/
MacPar Deluxe (free) http://www.xs4all.nl/~gp/Site/MacPAR_deLuxe.html

The best part is, S&C is automatically called by MacPar. Macpar can extract pretty much everything that osx can't do itself (and repair if you have .par2 files from a torrent/usenet nzb) and if it needs to, like you're .001 or .__a files, it will automatically use the Split & concat program.

Slick...

I know it's an old post, but I actually found it trying to solve the same problem, that is, merging .__a .__b, ..., files, and since I managed to solve it, I thought I would post what I did here, for the next one :)
I've tried many Mac software and none of them worked. So I download a free trial of Crossover, start a new XP Bottle, downloaded FFSJ and launched it with this bottle. That worked just fine, was perfectly legal and free, and took about 10 minutes (downloading included).
Hope that can help!
