where can i download a good key logger for mac OS X?Im not very good with computers so i need a real easy one to use! Bloody kids are looking on sites i think they shouldnt!!!!

melon 01-17-2007 11:13 AM

If you look on Versiontracker: http://www.versiontracker.com/php/se...str=key+logger there's a whole host of keyloggers, some free and some commercial.

Searching MacUpdate only provides 1 result though, logKext: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16155

Editorial opinion: Kids will inevitably look on sites you don't want them to; if not at home, then on a friend's computer, or at the library, or any other chance they get. I think key logging sends the wrong message to your kids. You simply -cannot- monitor their computer usage everywhere, so it is really important that you let them know just WHY some sites are inappropriate or dangerous and come to an understanding of the matter with them. Otherwise, this sort of approach just encourages kids to try to get around your oversight and creates a much worse situation. Keylogging might achieve some of your short-term goals for a while, but it might be ultimately self-defeating. Please note that not everyone on this forum would agree with this sentiment, but this is my view.

thank you for your opinion. I do however agree with your opinion its just that i think that my eldest child has a gambling addiction and he gambles online alot. I would just like to track how often he is gambling then i can approach him knowing im not just being over paranoid!!!

Instead of using a key logger, maybe you could actually get some real help to help you help himself.

I use TypeRecorder by http://www.rampellsoft.com/ and recommend the program company. When I've had a question or problem because of changing computers they have always been helpful.

miss computer dummy here is having problems with the carbonkeys logger.ThreeDee can you give me a quick walkthrough!!!!!

Note that you access the keystrokes on another Mac while the keylogged one is on. I forget how to get the logs from the keylogged computer.

Anyway, download the program on the computer you want to track, open it with the latest Stuffit Expander (Yeah, I know, I know...) program for 10.4 Tiger. If you are using 10.3 Panther, get v10 instead.

Open the "Trojan Server" program.

Go into System Prefs, and goto the "Firewall" tab. Click "New...". If you cannot click it, click the lock in the lower left of the window. You will probably need to enter a admin password. Then type in 3434 into the TCP port box. Near the top of the window, note the "<whatever-name-of-computer>.local" text.

Close System Prefs, and delete the CarbonKeys files you downloaded to cover your tracks (sorta).

On the other Mac, download the CarbonKeys program again, this time open the "Client" program, and type in the "<whatever-name-of-computer>.local:3434" text into the spot that says "127.0.0.1:3434" and click connect. When connected, in the Client program, click "Download Log" to see the log. You can shange the number 1 to something else to see all the keystrokes. Note that Mac OS X somehow prevents the program from stealing many types of passwords, and CarbonKeys may not be able to keylog them.

You can also see a Screenshot (!) of what the person is doing on the other Mac by clicking "Screenshot". It saves it to the folder the Client is in.

I've just done a careful review of everything out there in Mac OS X keyloggers. The best option is free. logKext.

You do realize even kids have privacy and keylogging could be illegal? Even on your own computer and your own kids.

People - check the post dates please. This thread has come back from the afterworld 6 times now. The OP's teenagers are probably of legal age by now.

And they may want a serious talk to their parents.

Seven times.

Leopard is Mac OS X version 10.5, and the page keeppc linked lists the software as compatible with 10.5.

Eight times. And now referencing an OS that is 3 major versions old.

acme.mail.order 09-18-2012 08:36 AM

Nine. Oddly, they don't do that very often here. Maybe once or twice a year - the locals are a fairly civil bunch.

DeltaMac 09-18-2012 08:44 AM

And, this type of thread is a magnet for spammers, and "Emma" seems to fit that mold.

acme.mail.order 09-18-2012 08:52 AM

Maybe, but it's an interactive spammer on a very slow burn then.

SirDice 09-18-2012 09:03 AM

It's a spammer alright. 4 posts, all in keylogger related threads. With dubious links to keyloggers in the sig.

I'd say cull!

DeltaMac 09-18-2012 09:07 AM

What I see is the inclusion of a couple of links that just _happen_ to be related to the thread, and to commercial products.
There's "in your face" spammers - and then the gentle spammer, no-mention-of-the-links (no real purpose, they just "happened" to be in the signature, and "Emma" only posts in threads that have keylogger as the topic.

SirDice 09-18-2012 09:37 AM

You do realize even these are automated? Heck I've even seen automated spam runs that first ask a rather innocuous (and even on-topic) question and three days later "somebody" else answers it with links to malware infested sites, thanking them for the question.

I don't care if they do it fast and hard or low and slow, a spammer is a spammer. Kill it with fire!
