Apple Mail & GMail
I'm running Apple Mail 2.1.1. (752.3), and have a weird problem with GMAIL.
There are times, that Mail will leave messages on Gmail. I can hit "get mail" numerous times, and yet Mail will leave those message on the gmail server. I am required to use my linux computer & Claws-Mail to d/l those messages, then import them into Mail. Any idea(s) why Mail is doing this? |
Go to Gmail settings and click on 'Forwarding and POP'. Check out the settings. It may not be AppleMail that's the problem.
In AppleMail, click: Preferences/Accounts and see if "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message" is checked. See what the removal time is set for. |
Yes it is
It is set to "remove copy from server"
and set to remove "right away" |
I assume by "set to 'remove copy from server' ", you mean AppleMail preference/accounts etc.
What about gmail settings/forwarding and POP? Does it read, "Forward a copy of incoming mail to: ........... and 'delete Gmail's copy"? |
GMAIL settings
This is what is working, for Mail & Claws-Mail
Gmail settings; Forwarding -> Disable forwarding Pop Download -> Pop is enabled. |
Apple Mail & Gmail
I'm not familiar with Claws-mail; however, since something is not working in the current configuration, try this:
Go back to Gmail/settings/Forwarding and POP Then check "Forward a copy of incoming mail to_______(your ISP or whoever is downloading your mail to AppleMail) and>>> click on "delete GMail's copy". What is in that line now? 'delete Gmail's copy' or 'keep Gmail's copy in the inbox' or 'archive Gmail's copy' . I'm not positive, but I think that if "Forward a copy of incoming mail to _____" isn't checked, mail isn't automatically deleted from Gmail's inbox and you'll have to delete it manually. |
Apple Mail & Gmail
That is not really an option. My ISP has no spam protection and kinda hit or miss. Which is why I am using gmail.
Claws-Mail is a linux mail client. |
Let's try one more thing: Go to AppleMail/Preferences/Accounts/Account information. What is listed for these three items? -
Account type: Description: Incoming Mail Server: |
Apple Mail & Gmail
Quote:
Account type: pop Desciption: gmail Incoming Mail Server: pop.gmail.com |
It looks okay. But I'm stumped. I'm guessing at this point - since your Gmail isn't checked to delete Gmails copy, and the Apple Mail is checked to
delete Gmail's copy, there may be a conflict. This is from Gmail 'help': How do I delete messages in Gmail after I've accessed them with POP? To delete messages accessed with POP: Log in to your Gmail account. Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page. Click Forwarding and POP in the orange 'Mail Settings' box. Select delete Gmail's copy from the drop-down menu in the POP Download section. (That's POP Download - item #2) Click Save Changes. Check 'delete Gmail's copy" if it isn't already. I can't think of anything else. Sorry. |
Mail & gmail
as I stated, it is an intermitent problem. Not very day, etc.
Thanks for the help.. At least I now know, I had the correct settings, but still wonder why on occasion, gmail will leave messages in the InBox. |
Hey,
I think you may find the solution on the gmail support pages: https://mail.google.com/support/bin/...y?answer=47948 Adding "recent:" to your "username" in your Mail app will make sure you get all new mail - even if it has already been picked up via POP by your Linux machine. Hope this will help Cheers Klaus |
thanks
Thanks. I added that to my login, and will see if that fixes the intermittent problem

mail not removed from server
I've had this problem for FOUR years with my hosted/POP email.
I can download messages (to my Mac), have them deleted from the mail server (I even check the "get info" , and see that the server is "empty"). Then log on via "webmail" to my ISP- and many times there are STILL old messages tha twere already downloaded & should have been DELETED. Some are days old, some YEARS old!. So I delete them via webmail- and DIFFERENT ones (that are still old!) will show up!! This happens a few times a week. I can't even find a pattern to understand why it is intermittant. I have complained & complained to my ISP- but they insist that Mac mail is to blame! What REALLY sucks: Mac mail does a fairly decent job of sifting out the spam. But when I login via webmail- there are HUNDREDS of spam emails. Boy, is THAT fun to delete!!! |
I have the same issue, using Comcast. Messages that are months old pop up sporadically, without rhyme or reason. Mild annoyance, they are not spam, just messages I deleted mostly. I also have my settings at 'delete right away'.

Same problem here
I have to hit 'get mail' multiple times in apple mail each time I want to retrieve mail over pop from gmail. very annoying.

gMail settings - Configuring Apple Mail
You might want to confirm that ALL your Mail.app preferences match to the recommended settings posted on gMail site:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...y?answer=13275 1) Enable POP in Gmail and 'Save Changes' 2) In Mail.app, Enter 'pop.gmail.com' in the 'Incoming Mail Server:' field. 3) Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') in the 'User Name:' field. 4) Enter your Gmail password in the 'Password:' field. 5) Select 'Add Server...' from the pop-up labeled 'Outgoing Mail Server,' and enter 'smtp.gmail.com' in the 'Outgoing Mail Server:' field. 6) Enter '587' in the 'Server port:' field. 7) Check the box next to 'Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).' 8) Select 'Password' next to 'Authentication:' and enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com) and Gmail password. 9) Click 'OK.' 10) Click 'Advanced' and check the box next to 'Use SSL.' (The port changes to '995.') 11) Save on exit of Mail preferences. |
Been there, done that numerous times before I asked for help.
Apple Mail & Gmail both need to get their acts together. In the end, I dropped gmail. |
Mail has the same problem for me with Gmail. I'm now using Mailplane (private beta), which is great, but I find it quite annoying that Mail can't cope properly with Gmail.

Messages left in inbox and not archived.
I have the same issue with mail.app and gmail. I have it set up to download via POP and immediately archive. Some accounts this works without a hitch but on a couple of accounts random messages are left in the inbox and not archived even though they have been successfully downloaded via POP.
I have tried everything including completely deleting and resetting up the account in mail.app but nothing seems to fix it. It is the randomness of the issue and the fact that it only happens on a couple of accounts that are set up identically to the working accounts that makes this so hard to troubleshoot! |
One thing I've noticed with apple mail and Gmail is that Gmail won't send out anything that it regards as spam or any e-mails that you send to yourself. Just some info
|
apple mail unpredictable in general
i've found "get all new mail" doesn't. i have all multiple accounts and want them all to check every 5 minutes. however, the program is pretty random about what it wants to download. opening the activity viewer when i do a manual check confirms this (only 1 of 3 accounts is actually checked). I have to select "get new mail" and highlight each account individually. suddenly I'm downloading 100's of emails.
