switching to mac help

hi im a pc user at the moment. I have been using microsoft all my life and i barely really knew what a mac was until november 2006. Now i want to buy a mac book, the black one that cost £1000. I have a problem which is alot of applications like my p990i update service and other media converters and stuff dont work on mac. I heard windows can be run on it with boot camp and parralel. if im sunning windows on my mac does this mean i will be able to do all the wondows capable things on it. Please i need some serious help. Also while buying my mac should i buy the tiger update with it. U can post ur replies here or send them to my e-mail topebrown7@yahoo.co.uk please id really appreciated detailed help and perspectives. I dont mind how lengthy they are. thank you all so much

It might be worth listing the apps you rely on/use and the devices you need to work with your new computer so we can tell you if they are made for Mac, can run or if they have equivalents.

It would be a waste of money to buy a MacBook find out you cant use your fav apps and then just use it to run Windows...

also.... Tiger ships with all new Macs. :D

cwtnospam 01-03-2007 05:08 PM

My feeling is that you should get the Mac and try to find Mac equivalents of any PC software that you need. Any that don't have equivalents can be run through Windows on Bootcamp or Parallels. Eventually you'll get everything converted over to Mac and won't have to use Windows at all. ;)

And yes, Tiger comes with new Macs. Leopard is expected by spring, but I wouldn't wait on that. Maybe wait to see what gets announced next week though!

Thannk you basically i need to sync my p990i and n80 which is very important.

I also need p2p sharing softwares like limewire, bittorent etc.

I also use 3gp, mp4, mp3 converters.

These are the most important softwares i use. I've heard that the p990 doesnt sync with the mac in any way i.e cannot be updated, backed up etc with the mac. Will i be able to do this with the windows side of the computer. Thank you so much for your help.

Photek 01-04-2007 12:30 PM

neither phone are officially supported by Apple, but thats probiably coz they are quite new, I suspect they will be supported soon enough.. Perhaps Parallels is the way to go for those!

Limewire and BitTorrent are both available nativly for OSX

as for file converters.... there are plenty out there for Macs.... www.macupdate.com is a very good way to find software. Does this look like what you want? http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20002

topebrown7 01-05-2007 02:19 PM

thank you so much. But that isnt exactly what im looking for.
Its more of video converters that can convert between different formats, like mp4, mpeg, 3gp and another audio converetr that can do the same with audio formats like wav, mp3, aac, ogg stc like xilisof for windows or imtoo.

cwtnospam 01-05-2007 04:31 PM

Macupdate is a good place to look for software:

tommorow or 19th. O.k this might seem a bit akward but the new vista is out and ill need to be installing it because of my phones i.e updating and syncing. My p990 only supports windows and if you know about this phone then youll know it seriously needs to be updated. Do i have to buy the vista or is there anyplace i can download like a torrent download. And after i foinish setting up my mac how do i install it. Also is there anywhere i can download parallels for free? Expecting some answers please :) Thank you very much.

Photek 01-17-2007 01:25 PM

Vista (I believe) is available as a beta (from MS) for testing... so I believe it is free in its current unfinished state.

You can run Vista through Parallels... but its not free, I think you get a 30 day trial though...

You could run XP via BootCamp (free, so long as you have an XP SP2 disk)

you can get your phone talking to your new Mac.... but its not beautiful! http://mobile.feisar.com/uiq3.html and http://magnus.nordlander.tk/technolo...e-mode-enabler

topebrown7 01-17-2007 01:35 PM

i dont understand that at all. will try the links. Thanks

topebrown7 01-17-2007 01:39 PM

thanks but the links dont saying anything about updatin the phone which is the main issue. I can already file transfer and al that but hte current state which the phone is like windows xp.... too many bugs and too slow. A new firware R9 was recently released which i need to update but can only do on windows. will check out the bootcamp later and see how to get vista.

BootCamp is free software from Apple to let you start up in Mac OS or Windoes XP. Only catch is that it has to be Windows XP Service Pack 2.

topebrown7 01-18-2007 05:04 PM

finally mac certified!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

topebrown7 01-18-2007 05:07 PM

oh so how can i download windows service pack

topebrown7 01-18-2007 05:08 PM

or sorry please could you pleaseeeeee post like a direct download link to a torrent soy search of windows vista. Iv searched and a few popped up but i dont know whic 1 is best..... and i heard torrent can be dangerous. thanks phototek

Photek 01-18-2007 05:42 PM

if it was me... which its not...

I would DL the trial of Parallels and install your copy of Windows from your old PC and see how you get on.

It looks like the beta program for Vista has ended, (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...y/preview.mspx) which means any legit options you had for DLing it have ended.

Enoy your new Mac before you dirty it up with Windows ;)

(I should say I DONT have Windows anywhere near any of my Macs and am certainly not knowledgable about Vista)

ThreeDee 01-18-2007 05:48 PM

Uhh...

This topic is bordering on the line of being locked.

Remember that if you run Windows on a Mac, you will have all the problems you had on your older PC.

For media files, there's VLC.

topebrown7 01-18-2007 06:50 PM

dont want to use windows anymore. far from it just want t update my phone. dont care if the option is legit or not just need to dwnload vista. ironically i could just install xp. but i dont want it to be that in future snyericsson will stp supporting xo and i will have to uninstall and install vista. So im thinkin in the ln run and trying to stay ahead of technology.lol. An help from any1 please vista download

topebrown7 01-18-2007 07:16 PM

No, we won't. So please don't ask again.

Photek 01-19-2007 03:38 AM

topebrown7..

If you need software for your Mac just ask!

You dont need to pay for everything.

- Flip4Mac and Perian will play almost every movie through Quicktime for Free. VLC is also good and free.
- NeoOffice or OpenOffice are great free alternatives to MS Office

what else do you need?

topebrown7 01-19-2007 10:53 AM

No, we won't. So please don't ask again.

Actually, I thought DOS was fun. It could do a lot of things without a big machine or a lot of overhead. Windows 3.x+ ruined all of our lives.

cwtnospam 04-20-2007 10:11 AM

I thought DOS was an overly complicated version of D.O.S. 3 from my Apple II+, and since it was marketed as a "business" operating system, I was disappointed to discover that it really couldn't do anything that my II+ couldn't do. I remember reading how the Apple engineers working on the Apple /// laughed at the original PC. Although I didn't think the /// was significantly better than the II, it was better than a PC at the time.
