Show off your menulets.

Menubar extras come up a lot on this forum. It made me curious as to what other people's menu extras look lie in the top right corner of their menubar.

Here is a picture of my menulets. I also use SlimBatteryMonitor but it only shows up when it needs to be charged.

I think we can learn a lot just by seeing how others use that extra space in the menubar.

Ok, left to right.

SlimBatteryMonitor (hidden),Path Finder, geekbind,growl,bluetooth,script menu, menu meter, airport, menucalendarclock, spotlight

Here's mine. Has a bunch of menu extras.

Description of menu extras from left to right:

BOINC Menubar for things like rosetta@Home
iScrobbler for my Last.fm (formerly AudioScrobbler) account
S.M.A.R.T. Reporter to detect some disk drive failures.
Gmail Notifier to check for new email on my Gmail account
ClamXav Sentry scans files for viruses
MainMenu does maintenance on the system
Monitor menu changes screen resolution
iChat menu - I don't like having iChat open all the time
Keychain - sometimes lock screen or edit keychain
MenuMeters - CPU, RAM, and Network activity. Seems like my CPU is at %100 right now, seeding Ubuntu and NeoOffice via BitTorrent.
Input menu - I don't actually use this :)
Date/Time
Fast User Switching

roncross@cox.net 12-25-2006 06:19 PM

What are you using for your date and time?

For my date, I use menucalendarclock. I need the date and time more than the calendar. What are you using?

ThreeDee 12-25-2006 06:28 PM

I use the built-in Mac OS X clock. :)

From Left to right: Adium, Connect360, Temp Monitor Lite, iChat, AirPort, Battery, Clock, Spotlight (Bluetooth SHOULD be there...hmmz.)

EDIT: We need a "Show off your dockstuff" thread.

Here's how I did it.

1. Upload screenshot to somewhere like www.imageshack.us.

2. Once uploaded, take the screenshot (It's just the menulets, right? If not, follow step 2.1), find the direct link to it, and put img tags around it:

{img}link goes here{/img} (Replace the {}'s with []'s.)

2.1: If it's a large image, just link to it.

3. and you get the result in my post.

You could attach it, but I prefer to host my images off-site.

Here's my menu bar (left-to-right) :

iTunes controls (Butler)
Music (Butler)
This Mac (Butler)
Wireless range
Day of the week
Time
Fast user switching
Spotlight

You will need to change the ".txt" to ".jpg" for your mac to recognise it.

NovaScotian 01-01-2007 09:23 AM

Way down below the "Reply to Thread" text box there is a button "Manage Attachments". Click that and do what it says there.

roncross@cox.net 01-01-2007 10:21 AM

You really like Butler. So do I, it is very cool.

I like Butler a lot. It's my number 1 application. I don't have it anywhere in my menu bar but I do have it in my docklet. Now that I think about it, you can sort of use the docklet as a semi extension of the menu bar.

I'd be lost without Butler, which occupies the first three places on my menu bar, but I don't use the docklet.

This Mac (Butler)
Bookmarks (Butler)
Web Search (Butler)
Google Notifier
Alarm Clock
Folder Sentry (ClamXav)
Meteorologist (for my wife's commute)
MenuCalendarClock iCal (the days sometimes blur for a full time Dad)
CPU (MenuMeters)
Airport
Keychain
iChat (to see if Grandad is available for a long distance visit with the kids)
AppleScript
Battery
Fast user switching (don't really need it, I just like the "J")
Spotlight

Others (Iconit, iShowU, etc.) appear when in use.

johngpt 01-01-2007 01:06 PM

It's interesting seeing the menu bars of all. I'm afraid I'm rather bland. I'm probably underusing Butler, having acquired it for its ability to assign shortcut keys to apps. I find the menu bar item I use the most is the volume control!

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/9581/picture1lk9.png

Thanks to Anti for the introduction to ImageShack. Quite easy to use.

Once the screenshot was uploaded to ImageShack, I then clicked and dragged on the 'Hotlink for forums' to select the url, command-C to copy it, and then just pasted it into this reply. It automatically came out with the [ ] brackets. Preview Post indicates that it should view brilliantly!

Best wishes for the new year to all.

roncross@cox.net 01-01-2007 01:10 PM

The image from ImageShack looks better than the attachment that I use for this forum. I don't have to click on anything and it just shows up. Maybe I will try it next time I have to post an image.

egypturnash 01-02-2007 12:32 PM

L-R:

Adium
Doodim (I really need to hack in a custom image for that)
Apple's battery status, with edited status text
Volume control (though I almost never use it - I use the keyboard buttons)
Airport status
Spy (the two bottom-circle fragments show user/system CPU load; the dashes show I have no network activity at the moment)
MenuCalendarClock
Spotlight (never used, but I haven't bothered trying to kill the menu item)

roncross@cox.net 01-29-2007 10:23 PM

Can you specify the names of the menulets? I am particularly interested in knowing the one on the far left.

Anti 02-11-2007 12:30 AM

I made a significant upgrade from my last set.

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/390/picture1uq7.png

Temperature Monitor Lite, Last.fm, iAlertU, Growl, AirPort, Displays, Bluetooth...you get it.

roncross@cox.net 02-11-2007 01:34 AM

If there is one thing that I would change about the Airport menulet, it would be going from graphical to digital. The graphical representation of the airport menulet is not very accurate since it is subdivided into 4 bars. So each bar represents a cumulative strength of 25%*n +/- 25% where n is the high bar that is black.

Anti 02-11-2007 03:11 AM

True. My AirPort Widget only reports a 19% connection strength.

johngpt 02-11-2007 09:35 AM

Or possibly clicking on the bars would show the strength in the drop down menu?

ThreeDee 06-26-2007 05:27 PM

Update: I removed a lot of unneeded stuff from up there:
http://i12.tinypic.com/4xnxb9u.png

Last.fm Scrobbler
Adium
S.M.A.R.T. Reporter
MenuMeters RAM/LAN/CPU
SoundSource

Monitor
Date/Time
Fast User Switch
Spotlight

roncross@cox.net 06-26-2007 05:59 PM

How do you like smart reporter? would you recommend it?

ThreeDee 06-26-2007 06:26 PM

A while ago, my friends called me about this 'dumb smart error' that kept appearing on his computer's BIOS screen. The computer still 'worked' then. A few days later when I went to fix it, he turned it on but it wouldn't boot up. The drive was dead.

Ever since then, I use SMART Reporter. I find it to be pretty useful. It hasn't ever reported to me about anything (which is a good thing). I use it on all my Macs.

elementsk8er5945 07-18-2007 11:11 AM

i cant upload mine because it gets saved as jp2 which is seen as invalid on these forums, but the only addition i made were:
Classic Status
the lock from keychain access
ichat status
eject button

roncross@cox.net 07-18-2007 02:58 PM

That's what GraphicConverter is for.

You forgot to describe what is the icon between Airport and MenuMeters CPU Usage. I'm curious: what is it?

MacBurg 07-29-2007 10:33 PM

Whoops, yeah its MenuMeter Disk Activity.

What iTunes controller is that? I'm looking for a good one to add into the menu, would you recommend it?

roncross@cox.net 08-12-2007 08:02 PM

What is main menu?

ThreeDee 08-12-2007 08:16 PM

Main Menu is a menulet that lets you do a bunch of tasks, such as repairing disks, showing hidden items, clearing caches, disable dashboard, and whatnot.

jcosmide 08-28-2007 03:22 PM

Is there an Apple Mail notifier for the menu bar?

roncross@cox.net 08-28-2007 03:55 PM

http://www.squeaksoft.com/products/MailCountX/

Try this out.

Quantumstate 10-02-2007 11:31 AM

"gimme some more tunes" is not the right name.
Neither is "gimme more tunes" or "gimme some tunes", or "some more tunes".

And I wish the Mail notifier weren't so old.

roncross@cox.net 10-02-2007 12:44 PM

Here is a neat site for menulets in one spot. Some are free and other or fee.

* Adium (IM client)
* Dropbox (shared folder)
* Optimal Layout (like Witch)
* TunesArt (fetches iTunes artwork)
* Squeeze (seamless file compression)
* DwellClick (clicks the mouse for you)
* Script Menu
* Time Machine
* Eject
* Volume
* Keyboard (in Terminal, I find it useful to use U.S. from time to time)
* Date
* AirPort
* Username
* Spotlight
Insane, no? And I'm installing the Last.fm scrobbler atm. Oh boy, it just up and crashed.
