NEW Macbook (Core 2) can't connect wirelessly with 2Wire--Wrong Password?!
Hello! I got my Macbook (I switched from PC!) today and I have been trying to connect wirelessly (through AirPort) to out household DSL network since I received it. We have the SBC/AT&T DSL service using a 2Wire Router. I have tried entering the password (the WEP key I found at the bottom of the router - and yes, it's the one in the brackets) but my Macbook says that the password is invalid and I can't connect! What do you think I'm doing wrong or what else should I try? HELP!
[By the way, I have also tried using a "$" before the WEP key but still not connecting] |
Did you try the hexidecimal verison of the password?
Is the password 5 or 13 characters? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108058 |
It's a 10 digit paskey (all numbers).
|
A 128 bit WEP hexadecimal key is 26 hex characters. That's what I would try. The link yellow gives tries to differentiate between passwords and ASCII keys and hex keys - I think.....
See the bottom of this help page, too: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106424 HTH |
I got the WEP key from the bottom of the router. How do I get the 26 HEX characters? I tried adding a "$" or the "OX" before the 10-digit WEP ket but still not working. I even removed the password from the router and my Macbook still won't connect.
|
Are you sure it's a wep key, I'm sure a 2 wire I worked on recently said the number between the brackets was a WPA key.
|
Yes I'm sure it's a WEP key -- I have been able to use effectively the whole set-up I'm trying to do now when I was on my old PC connecting wirelessly. I have been tweaking the setup of the router (or whatever you call it) from having WEP key to switching to WPA-PSK to removing the password/authentication key entirely but my AirPort still can't connect. I am currently using my MacBook connected to an Ethernet cable (which connects perfectly). I have tried the following:
1. Using the WEP key (10 digit) and inputting it with either a preceding "$" or "OX" 2. Using "apple" as a password and inputting both "apple" or the Hex value. Still no signal! Is there a way out of this or is it time to get a new router? If so, what brand do you recommend? -- Of course I still want my old router (we got it on 2005 by the way) because I spent an easy $1400 on my new MacBook and I feel dizzy just thinking of buying anything else. Thanks. |
First make sure that the problem isn't on your MacBook by going to some other location (friend's, Starbucks, Apple store, etc) and see if you cann connect there.
And the first thing you should do when having trouble with a wireless network is turn off the encryption to make sure you can connect that way. |

I betcha it'll work fine after that. |
try to put $ in front of your password. i don't know what it is but it works
|
Hello Arashkitty,
Had same issue and just now resolved by switching 2WIRE Wireless Settings to different wireless channel [7 (2.442MHz)] and using '$' before WEP key. Wife is very happy now:) Good Luck... |
Exactly the same problem
I just bought a new Macbook Pro and have the same problem with the 2wire router. I also have a Powerbook G4 and it still works flawlessly. My Macbook Pro isn't the problem, cause I can join my neighbors wifi (it's a linksys). The WEP password is at the bottom of the 2wire unit in brackets. It's the same WEP password that I use on my Powerbook G4 and it works. I try the exact same WEP password on my MBP and it says 'error joining...'.
|
How did you change channels
How do you configure the 2wire router?
I suppose you connect the ethernet cable to my MBP. Could you please give me the steps to change to channel 7? |
Solution: Free Internet
I just opened my Wireless connection, made it public, problem solved.
Haven't tried to protect it again. Let my neighbors enjoy free internet! |
I set up a 2wire wireless router for a client of mine about a 9 months ago, so bear with me because I am trying real hard to remember exactly how they are set up. Typically they come with some sort of interactive set up CD which you install, but I didn't use that. Instead I reset the 2wire router, which has a wep key "hardwired" into it by default. That key is printed on the actual router on a sticker. Then, you had to use a $ in front of the wep key when setting up your network. This is due to some compatabiltiy issue with non apple hardware I was told, by apple.
|
I found two solutions, that have been written here already. One is to open the wireless to everybody.. or.. better is to change the channel to 7 (2.442MHz). And how do you do that?
From any computer that can connect to the network or you computer connected by a wire to the network. Open any explorer you have (Safari, IEE, Firefox..) and put "home" on the adress, you will acces to the network configuration. Go to "home network" (i dot know how exactly is called 'cause i have it on spanish: red domestica). then go to modify configuration or advanced configuration. There you can open the wireless network or can change the channel to #7. NOw the big problem I have.. jaja is.. how do I share files to my 2wire network from my macbook. tell me!!! |
heh...it sounds like you guys made it harder than it needed it to be.
in os x, when you go to connect to a wireless network, you're given three options with wep network passkeys - password (for airport routers), hex (the 10-26 digit key itself), and ascii (the 5 or 13 letter thing). every time i connect a mac, i just use hex. it's easier, and i've yet to not see it work. |
sharing files is pretty simple...system preferences>sharing.
the mac will do everything else. if, however, you need something more than just sharing your home folder, try out a package called DAVE. it puts a full windows networking stack on your Mac. |

With powerbook's or even the core duo macbook. I had no problem with wep password, but with core 2 duo macbook.. I don't know why it was kind of hard to get in the wireless network (2wire). That's why the solution is not as simple as using "$" or choose hex to put the password. Even though some friends have used their laptops (apple) in my network, I just shifted from pc to mac.. and I don't understand some things on MAC. If I find out how to share files trough 2wire, then I will put the post in here, but it seems that 2wire doesn't work with apple computers 'cause I can see all shared files from other PC's but not in my macbook  |
I don't quite understand what you are saying. 2wire is a networking device, a router. With out it, you can not network your computers together unless you use a direct connection with a cross over cable.
What do you mean by share the 2wire? The connection? |
Referring to the original post .... I have a 2Wire as well.
(You may need to first hook up to the 2wire with your ethernet cable, then from there you can access the router settings.) By default the network name for the 2wire is "2WIRExxx", where xxx are the last three digits of the units serial number. So if the s/n ends in 416 your wireless network ssid will be 2WIRE416. If nothing has changed on the 2wire, set up the wireless connection on the Macbook in the network preferences as connecting to a specific network, and use the "2WIRExxx" name, set it up as wep, and use the numbers inside the brackets on the bottom of the unit. If you manage to connect by wired ethernet, you can get into the router by going to http://home from there you can hide the ssid, change the security to WPA, set up all kinds of fun stuff.... OK not really. You may first have to establish the wired connection.... That's why I mentioned it above... maybe not... I've done this before with a 2wire, and for once may be able to actually help. |

Okay, you must make sure that you have windows file sharing enabled, and choose an account to do this. You do so through the control panels.
Now once sharing is enabled and running just hit cmd + K on your mac keyboard and browse for your PCs. Another good app to control all of this is called sharepoints, and you can download it here. http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/ |
update airport
There is an airport update to improve compatibility of the airport
It is for core2 duo computers |
also can't connect new Macbook to 2wire router
One week ago I received my brand new Macbook. After 6 hours with various tech support folks from 2wire, Apple and AT&T I am still no closer to connecting via airport to my wireless network.
I tried the suggestions posted here, nothing worked. Any other suggestions? |
If you have tried making the wireless network public and that doesnt work, then I dont know any other way, 'cause that should work with any public wireless network.
|
I just got mine working, had all the same problems, the old Powerbook g4 worked and the new MacBook (Core2) didn't. Go into your 2wire and first enable DHCP then after that change the SSID to something other than 2WIRExxx, i first tried matt with wireless security disabled (it worked on both computers) then i changed to a SSID i liked and turned wireless security back on with "WEP-Open" and "Use default encryption key" Put the $ infront of the 10 digit number on the bottom of the 2wire and you should be set.
Good luck! |
It seems I am having the same problem as dpack - I can connect to other wireless networks, but not my 2Wire network. I've contacted both Apple and 2Wire, and each is pointing to the other. I will try these suggestions later today and post the outcome.
Also - I don't think I can enter the "$" before the password - it won't accept that character. Thanks - |
I applied the update but no luck. I am not able to type the character "$" before the password - it won't accept it.
Any ideas? |
i am also a new mac user, i have a macbook core 2 duo. i have the same problem, and i have tried the things above, but being a new user, have not been able to fully understand what to do. can anyone help?
|
I am in the same position as the rest of you who have the new Macbook (Core 2 Duo). After extensive tech support sessions with ATT (SBC) and Apple, the guy at ATT (2Wire support) finally admitted outright that the router/modem model that I have (1800) is simply NOT compatible with OS 10.2 or higher. I have had the router for about a year. He suggested that I PURCHASE a new router (Model 2701) from them for $109, but he could not confirm 100% if it would work, but he said that it "should". I am trying to get the router for free from ATT (SBC), but so far they have only agreed to adjust half of the cost. I'm not sure how I will proceed, but I am frustrated.
|
I humbly beg to differ. I've had nothing but a 2WIRE with my Macs, and never had a problem, either with wired, or wireless connectivitiy.
For those having issues, please make sure you have the correct name for your wireless network,(from the settings on the router) are broadcasting that SSID, and you have the network open, with no encryption. (I will assume that you have a working wired connection) Once you establish communication this way, you can go step by step, changing the settings on the router and Mac one at a time. I'd start by first hiding the SSIDon the router. You must then tell your Mac in the network preferences to connect to the specific network name that is the SSID on the router. If that works, you can then enable your security on the router. I'd use WPA not WEP, as most people feel WEP is pretty lame. Go back into the Mac network settings, and fix up your encryption to match what you've entered in the router. Really, it should work.... I even altered the 2wire connection settings to be my id and password so the router connects as me and I never need to deal with that on the Mac side. Good luck! |
my friend has a macbook pro, and he is able to connect to the internet at my house. i have a macbook, and am unable to connect wirelessly to my own network.
|
mo... I assume you can connect with a wired network....
Can you connect at a public wireless area like a local Starbucks or other area where there is access that you know works... If that fails, maybe your wireless card is hosed.... If you've done this and tried all the above, I am indeed stumped - but since I'm not a network admin that ain't too hard to do! |
Same probs
Hey! I was able to connect by changing it to wireless channel 7 but then it said that the problem was with the service provider, internet and the server, because it successfully connected but I wasn't able to open a page because of that.
I have 2WIRE and Intel Core 2 Duo....and TIVO, are you from Mexico? Thanks and Happy New Year to everybody! |
I just set up my father-in-law's new Intel Mini with a 2Wire. Started out with a wired connection until I put in the password (no $ in front). Everything worked fine from the get-go.
|
2WIRE WEP password: $!
For what it's worth, I am a brand new convert from PC to Mac, and just purchased a MacBook Core 2 laptop.
I was quite dissapointed with the lack of help from the Mac OS regarding the wireless connection to my 2WIRE router, because with Windows it was as simple as entering the network password, a 10 digit number found at the bottom of the router. After looking through these posts, I tried using the $ in front of the password, and it worked the first time! |
wired connection works, wireless also works (on school wireless internet).
I had it running for a day here, by changing the channel to 7 and taking off network security, but it just stopped working AGAIN. i've been on the phone with both sbc and mac support, and neither were able to help. i am at my wits end here. anyone have any idea?? |
I just plugged in the ethernet cable and connected to http://home. Changed ssid to not broadcast, disabled wireless security again, and changed the network name from 2wirexxx to another name. went to airport with the cable still in, clicked connect to other network, typed in the name, clicked no security, and.... connected! Now will somebody please explain to me what is going on before i go mad. : \

Mo, you're lucky to get a connection at all.
Just got a MacBook 2 days ago (I'm trying to convert my husband to Mac) and am having exactly the same problem as arashikitty and krquake. Can't connect wirelessly to a 2wire router that came with my AT&T service and have had the router for only a year. Wired connection works great and wireless works fine with PCs. Not a good start for converting from a PC since my hubby uses his laptop wirelessly A LOT. Tried everything: changing the WEP password, different ways of entering the password ($, 0x, and 0X preceding the actual numbers), changing to WPA protection, removing password protection all together, changing channels from 1 through 11, and nothing has worked. After reading this discussion I decided not to waste actual phone time with AT&T, Apple, or 2wire. Tried email support from 2wire, but they haven't been helpful at all. Checked the MacBook on 2 other wireless networks (public, one password protected) and it works flawlessly. The router is just plain not compatible with Mac OS 10.4.8 as far as I can tell. I actually tried to get to some of my iMac files through the network with a PC laptop a few days ago and it wasn't working. I didn't pay much attention to it, but I think it has something to do with the same incompatibility. That connection had worked when I set it up a long time ago with my previous Netgear router. Went out today to get a new Netgear router, unfortunately I just sold my old one on eBay. After a few short setup steps, the network is accessible wirelessly to the MacBook, 2 PC laptops, a printer, and wired to my iMac. I'm disappointed with 2wire and AT&T for teaming up with such a bogus company, and I'm out an extra $40, but I've got a happy man at home and there's a lot to be said for that. My advice, drop the PC friendly 2wire (have you seen their website support topics?! nothing on Mac!) and get a universal router. |
I took my new Macbook to my friend's house who also has ATT (former SBC) and a 2Wire router and I connected immediately (using $ sign) with no problems.
I then noticed that although his router looks identical to mine, he has model 1000. Mine is a model 1800. The tech at 2Wire support told me that the model 1800 is the one with the problem(s), although I purchased it less than a year ago. ATT refused to give me a new router so after much deliberation, I am opting to let go of my land line and DSL and I am switching to cable. I hate to do it, but this experience and the lack of support from ATT have left my opinion of them soured. Good luck to you all. |
...Mine is an 1800 and works... even with WPA and SSID hidden.... Sorry.
This seems to be looking like a case by case type of failure issue. |
New MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo Does not work with old 2Wire
PROBLEM: Got a new MacBook Pro C2D and could not connect to my home wireless 2Wire 1800 modem. Tried all suggestions here. Did not work.
SOLUTION: Went to my Internet supplier chanched to the 2Wire 2700 wireless modem. It Works ! Apparently 2Wire models 1700 and 1800 use 32 bit or something like that and the MacBook can not get an IP from them. I have tried other wireless access points like Symbol, NetGear and they work fine with the MacBook. Hope this helps. |

I have the same problem with windows and still don't know how to fix it there. Im still looking for new answers to our riddle.. hope we get the solution some day some how. |
2WIRE Mexico
Yes I have the same problem. The 2wire 1700 Modem at my office in TJ does not work with my new Mac Core 2 Duo laptop. Tried everything here. But the 2wire 2700 at my home works FINE!
Time to get the 2700 for office. Tully Mars |
I just got a brand spanking new C2D 15" macbook pro today, connected to my wpa2 tkip+aes encrypted network instantly. I use linksys, I think most of these problems are with 2wire, and in the past I had to use a $ in front of the passkey to connect to an encrypted wireless network.
Anybody else fixed the problem that way? |
This discussion sounds very much related to my issue with a couple of exceptions (see below).
Here's my story: This morning I connected to my wireless network (DSL 2WIRE modem/router, model 1800) with no problem. This afternoon I returned and Airport refused to connect, giving me the error message, “Airport is unable to connect to the wireless network…” The network shows up as being available, but when I attempt to connect, it wont. (I didn’t make any changes or install any programs this morning). Here’s what I’ve done: [1] Restarted the router [2] Repaired permissions [3] Deleted the network’s entry in Keychain Access [4] Re-entered my WEP code (assuring it is in correctly; I’ve tried both with the “$” and without) [5] Used interface robustness and without. [6] Attempted to join the network from the System Preferences>Network.Airport route. [7] Created a new account and tried connecting. [8] Tried turning off the WEP code and could connect. (Since I share files on my home network, this isn't a "solution"). [9]Tried Resetting the MacBook Pro System Management Controller (SMC)(See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319). I did this (I think -- there wasn't any indication that the reset "took"), but alas -- no luck. [10] I gave Apple Care a call, but the support guy, while courteous and all, didn't have anything to offer other than telling me to take it in to an Apple Store for a repair/ My MacBook can connect to another (unsecured) network that I can “see” in my house, so clearly it isn't a hardware issue. Why I don't think this is problem with the router: [1] Two other MacBooks in the house connect to the network with no problem (with the WEP code intact). [2] My MacBook has been working just fine with the network ever since I got it 3 weeks ago Heeellllppppp! |
I'm a veritable network idiot, have a 2WIRE 1800, a MacBook Pro (not the C2D), and I never have an issue connecting, whether at startup or after extended sleep..... and I use wpa+tkip.
What it all means...? who knows.... if new modem/router solves problem, then modem/router, if not, then airport.... I think the users with problems should try new routers.... that's a relatively easy thing to try.... |
I had the same problems (MacBook Pro, 2WIRExxx Office Portal,
my Windows PC was successfully connecting wirelessly, the MB was not). I connected the MB via an Ethernet cable to the 2WIRE, typed in "home" in the address bar, and changed the Wireless Channel from 6 to 7. My Airport meter is now at 4 bars - success! |
2Wire Invalid Error (My Solution)
After reading several posts about 2wire invalid error, I following the advice of mkoreiwo, and everything worked (attached below)! I too have used a 2wire router wirelessly on other macs in my home without a problem. I then got a Mac Pro Duo, which worked wirelessly until yesterday when I updated security. The Pro Duo could not connect wirelessly and I got the "invalid" error, even though my Mac Powerbook had no problem connecting.
What I did was hooked up the ethernet. Typed in "home" in the URL Changed the name from the default to my own name Assigned my own WPA password (not WEP)--easier to remember Changed the channel for kicks (you may not need to do this) Left the SSID (it's responsible for your connection showing to everyone) enabled because I want people to view my cool name :-) Hope this helps. Well folks, I think the last security update did the trick and "broke" something that wasn't before.....
Since I applied the latest updates, I sadly have had a horrible time with my airport. While it still works, I am suffering from dropped connections fairly frequently! In most of those cases, I can turn off and turn on my airport card, and I am OK.... I hope it really is the security update that affected this, and they find a fix. |
..and today.... things are working with one small change. I have left the broadcast SSID turned on on the 2WIRE.
Since I am in a residential area without (hopefully) too many serious hackers, I feel the WPA security I have in place will do.... |
2wire firmware version
I am using a 2wire 1800 with FW version 3.7.5. It works fine.
I am curious to know what version of FW you folks are using, that are having problems? I wonder if you are using an earlier version. |
2Wire and intel Macs
I read your guys problems and thought I would offer some words of advice. When they started putting the core2 duo in the Mac book I had to get one so when I did I went to set it up with my 2wire I didn’t have any issues. I was running a 2Wire 270hg and firmware 5.29.51. Upon reading your issues I decided to do some testing. I had access to a couple different model 2wires besides the one I normally use and decided to test them with my Macbook. Here are the results of what I found:
Using a 2701hg-b running firmware 5.29.47 and an 1800hg running firmware 3.7.1 I was unable to recreate the issue of not working with the 2Wire. I was using a Macbook core2duo with 10.4.8. I tried it before the January 07 airport update, after the January update, and after purchasing the 802.11n upgrade. I tried wep open, wep shared, and WPA on both 2Wire. I also tried wpa2 on the 2701 since it was supported by that model HPL. I encountered no difficulties prior to the updates. After the January update I encountered some minor issues initially with wep. To fix it I cleared my preferred networks (located in system preferences, network, show airport and on the airport tab) and the keychain records of the 2Wire in osx. (Located in Apps, Utilities, then Keychain Access remove all 2Wire entries) After resetting the settings I tried WPA and it worked, then verified all the other forms of encryption worked as well. The most probable cause of the issue is either entering invalid settings or the wrong settings were being stored in the Mac preventing it from connecting. A couple other things that are useful in a situation like this is to change the SSID on the 2Wire so that your Mac treats it like a new network and selecting a custom encryption key (your 10-digit phone number for example to do so go to http://gateway.2wire.net then home network and wireless settings to do change the settings). If you specify 40/128 bit hex when entering the wep key than the $ isn’t necessary. The $ also isn’t necessary when using WPA. Next I proceeded to check the encryption after each of the OSX upgrades that are available with multiple 2Wire modems. It worked properly with the 2701 and the January upgrade and all forms of encryption after my previously mentioned trouble shooting. Upon upgrading to enable 802.11N there were no issues with the 2701 or 1800 with all forms of available encryption. If these suggestions don’t help let me know I will be checking back on this thread to see what I can do to help any one having difficulty. One last note, check your computer’s computer name located in system preferences, sharing. If there are any spaces or special characters in your name it could be causing some of your issue, use only letters and numbers not any of the following ` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) { } | [ ] \ ; ’ ” : ,./?>< or any others I may not have listed. |
One last thing.
If you cant get wep open to work wep shared or wpa should work fine. WEP keys need to be 10 or 26 digit hex numbers and WPA needs at least 8 digits.
|
It works!!!!!
lloydfitzgerald:
You are a lifesaver. The cherry flavored ones. :) I changed my default name to MyNetwork, rescanned for networks, selected MyNetwork, entered my WEP Open password, then "Voila". I was wirelessly connected to my 2Wire 1800 gateway with my brand new Macbook. You are on to something. I think it's the setup utility that is run for new Macbooks. When it failed to connect wirelessly, I connected directly via ethernet to complete the setup. The configuration may have been corrupted or something because until I did the above it continuely failed to connect properly. Thanks so much!!!! Quote:

Need to reset SSID continually
I have just solved my 1800HG login problem (problem started when I used a new macbook) by following all the helpful advice on this page. Renaming the SSID seemed to be the key. However, when I restarted my computer the problem re-emerged. Was again sorted by a SSID rename (I didn't even bother to change the WEP password). I then for a laugh went back to my original name and it worked fine!
So I am down to renaming my SSID each time I want to close down my computer (a pain as two other computers use the mobile network). I assume something is happening when the Macbook reboots that affects the log in to existing networks. If it needs to find a new network all is fine. Deleting keychain and preferred networks and renaming my share name with no spaces didn't help by the way. Any ideas? Seems a bizarre problem at present! Chris |
Preferred networks is problem
Sorry for immediately adding to my post. Deleting all the SSID's from the preferred networks seems to be the key to getting my system to work. It looks like I am going to have to do this each time I log on. Fun. I suspect I will upgrade my hub as my internet provider (BT in the United Kingdom) are offering me a new hub if I sign on for another 12 months. Thanks again for all the help from this site and I am happy to check any other things if people have similar problems. Chris

This works to fix the apple security update 2wire connection problem
Thanks, this is what I did and it worked great.
|
when clearing prefered networks chris dont forget the keychain
From my previous post:
"To fix it I cleared my preferred networks (located in system preferences, network, show airport and on the airport tab) and the keychain records of the 2Wire in osx. (Located in Apps, Utilities, then Keychain Access remove all 2Wire entries)" |
Just purchased a Macbook (24 Feb 2007) and had the same problems as everyone else, tried ALL the solutions (thanks to all the posters - this sort of forum is invaluable to non-techs like me), to no avail. Was just about to go out and purchase a new router...
But, hooked up via cable and downloaded a software update from apple that included an airport update. Now connected wirelessly !:) |
MacBook: no wireless connection after airport update 002/2007
Hey folks,
I decided to join this thread as I experience the same issue as many of you: I get the message: "There was an error joining the Airport Network ..." when trying to connect to a wireles base station. The network I used to connect to is open/non-password-protected. Yesterday I installed the new Airport Extreme update 002/2007. After about 1 hour the connection to the router suddenly broke I could not reconnect yet. There are 2 other Laptops connecting to that network in our house and they have no problem. So it really seems to be a problem of my MacBook. I already tried some of the proposed solutions: 1. deleted all keychain entries 2. turned off and on airport/ rebooted 3. deleted the list of preferred networks from network prefs I am now trying to get rid of the updates by installing a fresh OS. Strangly when I bought the Mac I could not connect for about 3 days with a fresh system, but after it suddenly worked and never caused problems. Is there anyone who understands what is going on with the Airport and what other solutions there might be? Cheers and thanks in advance Christian |
I've come to one solution (maybe it will work for you)
Well... just like all of you I've had those 2WIRE connection problems with my new MacBook Black. Sometimes (especially when I have a blackout at my house) I lose all wireless connectivity, however what I do in order to regain access is:
1) Type: home (on any browser, this will take you to the 2WIRE network setup.) 2) Home Network --> Wireless Settings 3) Change the following: a) Network Name (SSID) b) Wireless Channel (I changed it to the highest Mhz value) c) Disable Network Security d) Change Power Setting to any value (I chose 4 [Default]) 4) Click Save changes and wait until it rearranges whatever it needs to. 5) When it reloads, click the Restore Defaults button to undo everything you did on step 3. (yeah  ... weird but it works) 6) Retry connecting to your 2WIRExxx network I don't know why but this has helped me when I try it and I was able to connect again... Hope it helps you!!! |

"Disable Network Security" I've read through all the posts in this thread and they all seem to have a similar story: Disable security and it works. This isn't a solution, its a poor work around. Opening up your wireless network to allow you to connect is like leaving your front door unlocked because your key sometimes gets stuck. The problem is either with the key (laptop) or with the lock (router) and should be addressed. I stumbled upon this thread because I'm having a similar problem albeit with a D-Link 624 router. With an Open network or with WEP it appears to work fine, however I want to use WPA-PSK. Changing the channel on the router to Ch. 7 seems to have helped. Kind of odd though isn't it? I'm able to connect to this same router with the same encryption with both my Dell Inspiron 600m (using a Dell TrueMobile Wifi NIC) and my wife's Dell Inspiron 6000 (using an Intel PRO/Wireless Wifi NIC) however my Macbook Pro (non C2D) can't. Additionally I have another router (Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT) that's setup with WPA-PSK (TKIP+AES) in which I have no trouble at all connecting to with my Macbook Pro. I didn't have the change the channel on that router to get it to work. Right now I can connect to one of my wireless routers (Linksys) with no trouble or tweaking and the other D-Link624 as long as I leave it on Ch7. Does anyone know of a more permanent solution? Or at least whether Apple has identified this as an issue? |
I have tried most of the various fixes here in trying to get my new Macbook Pro connected to my D-Link router to no avail:
- changed to channel 7 - changed the SSID - changed the WPA password Looks like the only fix is going to be another Airport update to fix what they broke in 2007-02. This is getting really serious as I am now finding that I cannot connect to some important public access points that I was able to connect to prior to 2007-02. |
I agree this seems to be Airport related.
I have used the AT&T supplied 2WIRE wireless modem/router for years with WPA-PSK for ages.... then it stopped working with all my security enabled. I am still able to use WPA, and I automatically reconnect, but in order to do so, I must enable "broadcast SSID". |
Just got the mac book pro. Worked for 3 days and now nothing. Im glad to see Im not the only one who has been yelling at Apple and SBC. My question is simple...
Where do I go to change the SSID? Do I need to connect via Ethernet to do this? aw3 |
I just received a reply back from ADC where they stated that the 2007-02 Airport update bug is a "known issue" and "it is currently being investigated by engineering". Unfortunately, this "known issue" has broken airport for apparently everyone who uses a Macbook or Macbook Pro to connect to a variety of wireless routers with WPA. I have done quite a bit of searching around on this and there is apparently no reliable fix at the moment. Our only hope appears to be hoping that Apple will come out with a new patch and soon.
There is quite a long thread on this subject at: http://discussions.apple.com/thread....art=0&tstart=0 And understandably, there are quite a few very frustrated and irate posters there as well. |
Mac releases compatibility update
In addition to my previous post this recently came up. Apple released an update which would increase compatibility with your 2Wire. http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...te2007002.html
Apparently there were some wireless issues that this patch has fixed. I’m including my previous post for those who missed it. Here are the results of what I found: Using a 2701hg-b running firmware 5.29.47 and an 1800hg running firmware 3.7.1 I was unable to recreate the issue of not working with the 2Wire. If you cant get wep open to work wep shared or wpa should work fine. WEP keys need to be 10 or 26 digit hex numbers and WPA needs at least 8 digits. |
Regarding sodagreen's recommendation of the 2007-02 update (above), be VERY careful about electing to install this if you have not done so already. Rather than fix compatibility with third-party routers, this update effectively breaks the Airport card in Macbooks and Macbook Pros so that they can no longer connect to certain routers that are using WPA. This is my case, my Macbook Pro cannot connect to the wireless router at my office, as well as several other locations. D-Link routers seem particularly affected.
Because of Apple's "update", I was forced to go out and purchase a new router (and NOT an Airport Base Station, thank you) since my D-Link at home was useless for connection with my Macbook Pro following installation of the 2007-02 update. Do keep this warning in mind if you are thinking of installing the 2007-02 update. I wish I had not installed it. |
How do I change my channel? I just ran iStumbler on my macbook and 4 other networks are on the same channel as me and I think this is why I'm getting a slow connection.

This works for me, on a 2Wire 1800 HG.
(all these settings can be found on the rooter, accessible from your browser at http://home) from the local network area 'tab', wireless (Reseau domestique in french). - I have a custom ssid. - I am on channel 7. - I set the wireless mode to WPA (needs more than 8 chars). For some reason WEP mode is not allowed (maybe the OSX security patch prevent this rather insecure mode ?). |
Airport Extreme Update 2007-003 and latest Security Update.
Hello All.
I have delayed installing the most recent security update and Airport Extreme Update because of the various problems I and others have discussed in this thread. What is the current advice? Do these updates fix the problem or create more? As a side note.... My notebook now connects with NO PROBLEM to my 2Wire 1800HG. It started hooking up automatically last week after over a month of problems. I had resolved MY PROBLEM by running a wire. You know... brute force ethernet. Was it the phase of the moon or perhaps my Airport Card got jealous? Regards Mars |
THE FIX FOR THE MACBOOK PRO 1800HG WIRELESS CONNECTION ISSUES:
I to have a 2wire 1800HG. Firmware 3.7.3. I could not even connect to my 2Wire with security turned off and the SSID broadcasting. Thanks to my neighbor I was able to search this forum from his unhidden unsecured linksys. On to the good stuff: I am an AT&T DSL Subscriber. If you want this to work without changing a thing on your 2WIRE upgrade your firmware on the 1800HG to 4.25.19 I did this and was able to connect without changing the default SSID, Encryption Code or Channel on the router. I tested WPA and yes WEP Encryption without a hitch. On the WEP Code I used the $ on WPA there was no need. AT&T sent me a Blue Backup CD. In the "Utils\recovery" folder there were 3 .2sp files. The file you want to copy locally off the cd is recovery_425.2sp The only advice I can give you during the upgarde is the following: 1. Do not unplug the modem or disconnect the hardwired system that your using to perform the firmware upgrade with from the router during the upgrade. (If you do this you will be left with a paper weight) 2. open 2 seperate browser windows. http://gateway.2wire.net/ http://gateway.2wire.net/tech/upgrade.html The reason for this is if you just run the upgrade.html page there is no status. There is a text box and browse button to point to the locally stored firmware file. The modems lights will cycle amber for the length of the upgarde which in my case was 30 minutes. If you refresh the upgrade.html page during the upgrade it doesn't harm the modem but it cancels the upgrade. If you want to see status look at the http://gateway.2wire.net/ page. During the upgrade it will show you the progress of the upgrade but be patient. Wait until the lights on the modem stop cycling amber even though the status page shows 100% complete there are a few other things that need to happen before the lights go all green. I hope this helps. On a seprate note I also have my MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo fully updated Good Luck... |
2WIRE(1800) FIX with Macbook Pro
This is what i recently did, after muckign about 2 weeks on the damn thing. I'm sharing this because it drove me mad. The other way was to totally disable the wireless security, but that's dangerous. But here's another way. Tested on a Macbook Pro successfully.(but didn't work on my bootcamp WinXp OS though)
1. Go to your 2wire homepage portal. 2. Go to Wireless Settings 3. Select WPA-PSK 4. Then enter a 20 digits. (Makesure you write it down and store it somewhere safe where you won't forget) 5. SAVE. 6. FOR PCs - Click on WPA-PSK/TKIP 7. FOR MACs - Select WPA personal 7. Enter the 20 digits. It should work then. Worked on mine. Also My Macbook pro was running on Tiger 10.4.8, with the latest Airport Extreme wireless updates. |
Prodigy Infinitum 2wire Macbook pro error
a powerbook G4 works fine with 2wire modem 1700 (wireless mode) but as soon as you try to connect a macbook pro, it reads "there was a problem joining .... please try again". i tried out my macbook at a friends house, he has a newer 2wire modem and it works just fine.
I tried all the sugestions at my house, change wireless channel, turn off password wep security, etc. After a while it works.... but as soon as i turn the power of my 2wire off, and turn it back on.. problem starts again. after reading all posts in different sites i found out 2wire 1700 and 1800 are nos compatible with macbooks, they show an error to distribute correctly a new ip adress. In my experience you should all try changing your 2wire model to a newer version... i´m still waiting for a new one provided by prodigy infinitum completely free. If it works i´ll post which 2wire model works. |

I had no more problems with the wi fi at home, except when the electricity goes off. I wanted to buy apple airport extreme base station... in order also to take advantage of the 802.11n, but if I can get a new modem for free... I will save that money for something else. sbs |
2wire oddities & quick but incomplete solution
Half-solution while working on other solutions: I found that turning off WEP security on the wireless router let me connect, as others have said, but then I could turn security back on and stay connected. That is, until the power (or IP address?) was toggled on the router, then I had to do it again.
Our 2wire 1000HG was piling up *active* connections anytime a friend came over and got on the wireless, never making them inactive or removing them. We had reached 30, which is some kind of limit. I called our ISP and had this cleared -- along with a few other simultaneous changes, these seems to have helped (sorry I can't be clearer about which helped). More details: it worked until yesterday, when a Vonage router was added and the power turned off for the 2wire. Our house will be looking for a replacement for 2wire if we find a cheap one... -Stephen Replacing cars with community |
MacBook and 2Wire
I just got a MacBook that boots to mac or windows xp. oddly, it connects to the 2wire ONLY when i boot to the mac side. the xp side will not connect!!! i kept tweaking the settings thinking it was the card or the box. wireless access is a no brainer. tried all the stuff you all suggested, but still will not connect on the pc side.

Macbook And 2wire Success At Last!!!
I was having a devil of a time connecting my new macbook (when booting to Windows XP) to my 2wire router!!! i read all the forums and had no success. FINALLY, i realized that the Atheros card that apple used in the macbook might have software!! i downloaded the software and it now connects to an encrypted (WEP) network, which is the only thing that the 2wire box provides. anyway... 2 days of head scratching over. hope this helps.
my driver for the Atheros AR5800 was here: http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDow...oad-23460.html |

A really crazy think is that now when I lose conection because the router is turn off (or reset) on Mac side, I can get inside the windows side and connect to the network, I go back to mac side and it is working again. If you have 1.3 drivers on your windows side, and it is not working try to check the advanced settings of your connection of your 2wire acces point (on windows) there is a place that says something about wep encription and it says "this computer receives the key" or something like that, I dont have in my mind how it goes, un-check that box. The point is that you should write the password of your wireless connection there and that's all. Some times it will say that you are not connected but you will be able to surf the web. I really hope that the final version of bootcamp that is coming with Leopard wont have this kind of problems. good luck! |

Tell me if your connection in Windows is completely normal, not like mine that says not connected and Im connected checking web pages, and chating with friends. |
The only thing that worked for me was to disable the b/g mode and go with G only. Magically, it connects every time and I have had no issues downloading the 10.4.10 update or Pro Tools (190 MB).

Shame on you Apple you made me lose so much time ...
After a power outage nothing worked (WPA, 20 characters, whatever, now I have August 10th 2007 Airport update, 10.4.10, N.O.T.H.I.N.G). I also tried to upload a new firmware (looking for the binaries on the net made my day, one more time), but the rooter webpage got stuck The fix for me was to go to Frys and buy a NETGEAR wireless rooter that I plugged on my 2Wire rooter. I love Macs but I'd like to see the poor PC guy knock at the Mac guy next time there is an add, asking him about wireless :) |
I too followed the advice of mkoreiwo (below) last spring and it worked great. Now my problem is, I CAN'T REMEMBER MY PASSWORD!!! My husband got a new iPod video and it requires our password in order for him to access our home DSL. Anyone know where this might be found if I didn't save it somewhere?

You're passwords are stored in Keychain Access, located in your Utilities (/Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access) folder. On your Mac that already knows the password, open Keychain Access and enter the network name in the search field in the upper right of the window. This should locate it for you.

Thank you so much! I'm at work now and found it on this computer, so I will locate it tonight at home and hopefully it will work. Thanks.

This One Works
Hi PLEASE read this - I want to save you a lot of headache. I read through page after page in this forum and tried everything unsuccessfully. I have:
MacBook Pro, 2wire 1800HG, Firmware 3.7.1 IT LOOKS LIKE MAC SAVED MY WEP KEY THE FIRST TIME I TYPED IT (without the $) AND THEN DISREGARDED ANYTHING ELSE AFTER THAT. Delete all you preferred networks and then connect again using $ before your password. This sounds trivial, but I tried EVERYTHING ELSE and THIS IS WHAT FIXED MY PROBLEM. - it was all a matter of password caching (and I hadn't even saved it to my keychain) Also changed to channel 7 and then back to the originaly set 6. |
hey..
i have a better solution even if you use WEP without $ at the front of password... you can use Devicescape Connect it's a software to help you connect to wifi i have problem with it the first time.. but after that.. it works flawlessly everytime i reboot my macbook... the devicescape icon appears before the wifi icon appears... devicescape connects successfully even before the wifi icon appears... that's great.. no longer have to set my router/modem to open access |
thanks.

This is a very annoing issue on new Macs.. I'm still having the same problem on many hotspots I used to connect.. |
I have begun having multiple wireless issues with both my Macbook Pro and my iPhone lately, and I suspect it may be Apple software related, not my 2wire.
At hope I have WPA set up as my security. At work we have an open public network. From what I can discern, the airport s/w in my MacBook is not releasing the ip address when I go from work to home. Sometimes the reverse happens as well. The fix - this works all the time - is to restart my router. Turning off and on the airport does not work. The same symptoms occur when using my iPhone. When connected at home, I often experience drops, and the signal is fine. When that happens restarting the airport in my MacBook usually works. I've been very annoyed with this and have been tempted to go out and get a separate wireless router and just use the 2wire as a dsl modem, but there appear to be quite a few wireless issues with 5.2, so I am patiently waiting. Since I've never had issues before recent software updates, I'm pinning this one on Apple. If anyone has a solution - I sure as heck would like to hear it! Thanks!! |
I'm not sure if this is confined to 2Wire routers. I've got a Netcomm router and I can't connect to it from my Macbook pro if I use WPA security. I get Invalid Password error. I've changed the password on the routers wireless settings to be triple sure. I've turned in off and on, I've deleted all keychain entries. I just wont work. It's seems we aren't alone in this frustration. There's a massive thread at Apple discussions talking about WPA on Macbook Pros specifically.
|
Yeah, I visited the Apple discussions as well. I really hope this gets sorted out with the next update. It really seems to be a chaotic sort of problem, and not universally experienced. It does - as well - appear to be happening with Airport routers as well, so again it seems to be in Apple's court!
|
hmmmmm you know whats funny, is with all those commercials ive seen. I thought macs were just supposed to work outta the box :p
but all kidding aside troubleshooting WLAN issues are a PITA. hopefully apple will release a fix sometime soon :D darkdragon |
...yeah... that's how they get ya... Mine worked for a long time out of the box..... It's those darn upgrades!
|
I have the same problem with connecting my mac to my 2wire router wireless network.... except my network does not require a password to connect. I am not sure what to do....
