Cards go to the world series!!

Sorry, but I just couldn't contain my excitment! My dad and I are both die hard Cardinal fans. What a game, too!

Now they have to face the dreaded Tigers...

Jay Carr 10-20-2006 01:52 AM

And they will lose :D. Sorry, afraid I'm on the other side of the fence on this one. Gooo Tigers!

Carl Stawicki 10-20-2006 07:46 AM

I was hoping the Mets would go....and then lose. :p

MBHockey 10-20-2006 10:12 AM

I'm a loooooooooong time yankee fan (we'll i'm only 22, but my dad had gotten me to be yankee fan since i was 5 -- well before their golden years!) and even though i'm supposed to hate the Mets (which i do, heh) i didn't want them to lose vs. the Cards. It just seemed like their time.

Would someone tell MBHockey that he needs to learn a little baseball history. I'm guessing these names probably elude you: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Joe Demagio, Yogi Berra, Roger Maris, Rickey Henderson, Reggie "Mr. October" Jackson, etc etc etc.

I HATE the Yanks with a passion that is hardly understood by most of my peers. And I knew that. The Yankee's have won 24 World Series for the love of Mike. Not to mention taking their division 90% of the time. Before the golden years? Good thing you're not MLBaseball or I'd really have to make fun of you.

I will now go meditate for twenty minutes to forestall my natural inclination to hate you for being a Yankee's fan ;). (It's all in good fun really, I swear...no I went to counseling for this you see...Uh...anyway, signing off now...)

MBHockey 10-20-2006 06:22 PM

Anyone even remotely familiar with the sport wouldn't be oblivious to those names, so I don't really know where you're going with that. By golden years i meant recent golden years...i'm not sure how that isn't completely evident ;)

ArcticStones 10-20-2006 08:08 PM

.
Uhm, I have a question:

Isn’t the "World Series" a bit misnamed? I have never ever heard of any non-US teams competing...

The point I was making is that they haven't ever been devoid of golden years. That's the Yankee's for you, with the money they spend those years had better be gold!

I guess I was under the impression that you were trying to say that you became a Yankee's fan before it was popular, to which I was responding that it was impossible, they've always been popular, and they've always been good. If that's not what you meant, then I apologize. But I continue in my doggad determination to hate the Yanks.

ArticStone: You're totally correct. But remember, when the title was first made America was the only country that played Baseball. So it might as well have been the world series. Now it's just tradition (and you know how we are with tradition, we don't have that many so...) There is a World Baseball Classic now. Teams from all over the world compete in that, like FIFA. We're hoping it will expand as the years go by...

MBHockey 10-20-2006 09:33 PM

Well it's different for different generations i suppose. For my generation, there are "true" yankee fans and "new" yankee fans. I'm sure you can figure out when those started.

I don't want to get into the money issue about the Yanks, that's a whole other topic that would successfully derail this thread :)

But i think early 90s were definitely not their golden years...

Jay Carr 10-20-2006 10:05 PM

Huh, checked the records and I sure can't disagree with your logic. I guess you win Yankee's fan, since you're from New York I guess I'll stop harassing you... ;).

Have you seen the roster of a typical pro MLB team? The World is represented. Well, the parts that show an interest in baseball anyway. No player is playing for their home.

From what baseball I did watch when I lived in the States, I know that it is very much a multi-cultural sport. I’m also aware that a few Japanese players have signed on with US teams.

But to my knowledge, no Japanese team – for instance – has ever played in the World Series. Is it not, by definition, a competition between the best of the two baseball leagues in the USA?

Fascinating game!

Did you know that Baseball was a British invention?...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rounders ... school girls still play it in the UK to this very day :D

I wouldn’t say that too loudly in an American pub.

On the other hand, I’ve heard that Cricket is just an excuse – to drink tea with the boys. ;)

Cricket is lame.... or so I thought.....

One of my mates play professionally, and when I put it to him that Cricket was the most boring sport in the world he said I was missing the point...

'how many other ways in the world can you get away from the wife and kids for an all day drinking session and not get moaned at?' he asked....

I was stumped!

seriously though.... if it wasnt for beer, no one would watch cricket!

There's no such thing. If it's a pub it's British, and if it's American it's a bar.

I've found that people here seem to be more fanatical over football (our watered down version played by girly-men) than baseball in general. At least, the football guys seem to be more ready for a fight.

ArcticStones 10-22-2006 05:28 PM

Leave it to George Carlin

Bar, sorry...

Check out George Carlin’s hilarious comparison between the language of Baseball and Football. But you really do have to hear it! Here’s a brief excerpt:
“Baseball is played on a diamond.
Football is played on a gridiron.

In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.

Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.

Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play.”

Ah yes, but hockey is the only sport where the severity of the penalty you receive is a function of whether or not the other guy is bleeding. ;)

Permit me another excerpt (this is advertisement for George Carlin, mind you):
In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe!
:D

MBHockey 10-22-2006 05:58 PM

I've always enjoyed George Carlin :)

CAlvarez 10-22-2006 09:05 PM

Excellent comedy and political commentary all in one.

Arctic, it's your fault I have a craving for the bangers & mash at my favorite local pub tonight.

CAlvarez 10-23-2006 12:21 AM

Damn, that was good. The Fuller's London Pride ale was a perfect accompaniment.

jonjonc 10-24-2006 01:39 AM

george carlin's skit on the airport is pretty awesome too.

I wouldn't be so sure that the Tigers are gonna win. They are tied 1-1 right now!:D

jonjonc 10-27-2006 01:14 PM

3-1 Cards...;)
