Password Button on Login Window

1 Attachment(s)
hello peeps,

I have been playing around with Interface Builder and found that the login window has a password BUTTON, I have never seen it come up on the login window, so i found it kind of weird that it was there, any of you know how i can enable this button or what is it use for?

You can find the .nib file in /System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgentPlugins/loginwindow.bundle/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/LoginWindowUI.nib/

Here is a picture of it so you can see what I'm talking about.

thnx

That's not a password button. It's just a button. We all have it--we just don't use it very often. If you want to see what it does, just click on your computer name in the Login window--click repeatedly, in fact.

I tried what you said and nothing.....maybe i did it wrong or didn't understand you properly, can you please be a little more specific.

Look at my new picture, it clearly shows that it is a PASSWORD BUTTON.

now how can i use it and what is it for?????

Just because it's titled "password" doesn't mean it is.

When you are at the login window, you should see the following items (from top to bottom).

1. A picture of an Apple
2. The text "Mac OS X"
3. The name of your computer
4. A list of users.

Just click on number 3, the name of your computer. You'll see it cycle through different information, including the OS version number, the build number, the computer serial number, IP address, network accounts, and long date and time.

I believe the password button comes up when one is bound to AD or OD and their password has expired and must be changed.

you would think it comes up in an AD or OD environment but it doesn't, thats what i thought at first also but our computers are setup that way and it has never come up or maybe our sys admin didn't enable it

@chabig thats what i tried and nothing.

@hayne why was this thread moved?
is not a tweak

Have you ever had your password expire in AD and been forced to change your password?

It could also be that this is something that was a planned implementation, but never was implemented in OS X.

I moved it because it doesn't seem like it is a help request. You don't have any current problem that you are trying to solve - you are just curious.
It's a good bet that if you are looking at NIB files then you are doing tweaking.

yes, it happens all the time but the button never comes up, what happens is that another window comes up and it asks you to change the password.

@hayne i was looking at NIB files but for something else, than i found this and was wondering how to enable it so i can use it, i don't need a tweak for it just want to find out how it works or how i can enable it.

You must not be running Tiger. All Tiger machines do what I said.

Chris

it must be a setting somewhere than because I'm running 10.4.8, any more ideas?

Hmmm. Are you sure you're clicking on the computer name--the actual small gray text?

Here is an example login window:

You should be clicking on the text "blackbeauty".

Do you have any other machines you can try it on? How about an Apple store nearby?

I think you're talking about different things. I'm on 10.4.8, but clicking on the computer name cycles through various bits of text information - OS version, build, serial number, IP address, something about Network users, and the data and time - but a password button with the "keyholeN.tiff" / "keyholeH.tiff" icon (ie. I think the button really is a button) never makes an appearance...

My curiosity has been piqued too - from playing around with 'pwpolicy' on a standalone OS X client machine in the past, I could never get the 'newPasswordRequired' property to do anything other than expire the password so I was puzzled about how the user was supposed to change their password if they couldn't log in any more. I guess the suggestion that AD or OD is required for the option to appear makes sense but I'm still curious for more details.

Maybe we are talking about different things, but when you click on the computer name you DO get the different pieces of system information, right? Even biovizier does.

X@vier

chabig 10-06-2006 12:13 PM

We ARE talking about different buttons...my fault. I'm sorry for confusing the issue. The computer name cycles when clicked, but the password button is at the bottom of the window. Now I get it.
