macbook slow internet
HI,
bought a black macbook yesterday but am on the verge of taking it back because it is so slow on the internet. text pages load fine but anything with pics and especially video take ages. i have run pages side by side with my 1ghz 17'' powerbook and it is scary how much quicker the powerbook is.How can this be???. The macbook is supposed to be twice as fast. Ihave tryed different browsers like safari ,firefox and camino and it is still the same???. Is there some setting i have not enabled???. Gonna phone apple tommorow and if they cant help its going back. Any help or similar experience would really help. Feeling real jaded on apple right now |
Please give an example of a URL where you are having problems.
Do you experience a problem with the following page, for example? http://www.apple.com/trailers/indepe...heillusionist/ |
Are they connected to the internet in the same fashion? If so, is it a wired connection or wireless? Slow loading of graphics is almost always due to a slow transfer rate over your connection, it has almost nothing to do with the speed of your processor. So, we need to focus on what differences there may be in the set up of the internet (including their relative location wrt the base station) and see if there's anything that jumps out.

i have 16mb connection pretty fast.
have tested side by side on the url you provided with the powerbook. the powerbook won easily. also tested connected to my router physically,so that rules out it being a wireless problem. i noticed it first on this url.http://www.crailtap.com/c3/feature_f...mp_whatevs.mov powerbook took 3 to 4 seconds and macbook took 35 to load the whole thing. the clips dont even begin straight away because it loads to slow. thanks for the input,im gonna phone apple but i really think this macbook is going back. Its a shame because other than the speed problem it is real nice. cheers |
Right this is bizzare now.have tested again with router cable and it is blazing fast all of a sudden.
But wireless is still slow. wireless on powerbook is still fast. im lost. help please. starting to think i need to go in to network preference but am not sure |
Run the 3rd-party utility "iStumbler" (www.istumbler.net) on your MacBook to see what the noise level of your wireless network is and whether other wireless networks are in the vicinity.
Compare with the results you get when you run it on your PowerBook. |
i stumbler
i stumbler results
powerbook=speed 76,noise 0 macbook=speed 77,noise 0 macbook shows 2 other networks nearby but powerbook just shows my network |
aaaarggggh
phoned apple they said its a faulty airport card.i have my doubts.taking it back to the shop in an hour.anyone else have this problem?
|
just tryed a last go at reinstalling to see if that helps and the installation has just failed 6 times.its going back 4 sure.im so unlucky.
|
got a macbook pro in exchange.internet is still slow, cant believe it.
must be the router.it is a d link dsl 604+. Does anyone know of an issue on compatability with this router????? any help greatly appreciated. cheers p.s. macbook pro is great other than that |
macbook slow wireless
Hi guys,
i have posted about this in the hardware forum but know believe the problem to be network related so my apologies if u have heard this before. To cut a long story short i bought a new macbook a few days ago and straight out of the box the wireless signal was weak.Software update took 2 hours and downloading apps such as firefox showed a slow speed, downloading video clips is also very slow.I tryed my 17'' inch powerbook on the same connection and it blazed through these downloads.I phoned apple and they thought it was a problem with the wireless card so i took it back to the shop and exchanged it for a macbook pro.The macbook pro is behaving exactly the same as the macbook so my guess is the router has issues with new macbooks. The router is a d-link dsl 604+.Has anyone else had a similar problem?,if so how did u fix it?. I have no more cash available so a new router is out of the question at the moment.Which one would u reccomend if i did? This problem really is getting to me,i love my macbook but its turning in2 frustration lol. any help greatly appreciated cheers p.s. when i connect the macbook pro to the router physically it works fine |

Please do not create a second thread when one exists on the same or similar topic. If you want a thread moved to a different forums just ask a moderator. I have merged your two threads. |
i apologise, new to all this forum stuff.
|
I don't think your problem is due to the router. If it works well with your Powerbook then I don't see why it is the fault of the router if it doesn't work well with the MacBook.
Are you certain that you are using the same network (airport) settings with both machines? |
i think so,i will look side by side.thanks for the suggestion.it worries me that both the macbook and the macbook pro both do this though.
|
i cant see any difference in the settings 4 airport because there are no real settings to change on the powerbook running 10.3.7 except by default join.on the macbook pro running tiger there is an options button but with nothing to compare it to on the powerbook i am a bit stumped.
|
even stranger, when i finally load a video page i then clean the cache and history and even the cookies.lo and behold the video i just loaded and then removed from cache and history opens instantly?????
surely thats not right,if its not in my cache or history it should take as long as before to load???. |
so, i know i'm late to this thread, but maybe someone can help.
i've had my macbook pro since march, and it's been perfect. then, two days ago, it just became really slow. this only applies to any internet applications, but it's more than just web browsers - mail has been really slow too. has anyone figured out what this problem could be? |
Use the 3rd-party utility "iStumbler" (www.istumbler.net) to see what the noise level of your network is and whether other wireless networks are in the vicinity. Change the channel used by your Airport base station to be at least 3 away from other networks.
It might also be useful to use the "Airport Management Tools" that are available via a link on the bottom right of this web page: http://www.apple.com/support/airport/ |
Interpreting iStumbler.
If my network shows Signal at 65508 and Noise at 65444, what does that mean, good. or bad?
TIA Gavin |

Indeed. After checking on some of the other machines here, I am geting 65:0, which sounds more like what you and the earlier poster meant.
That ws the 24' iMac that it wasn't working on. Odd. |
Similar problem on my MB
no noise indicated in istumbler.
safari and firefox respond slowly. download rates are very fast when i download files but not web pages. it makes me think that the wireless card is fine. any advice? |
I'm having the same problem with my MacBook
I'm thrilled to find this thread, because I've been having the same problem with my MacBook and it's making me crazy with frustration. More important, it's too late to return it to Apple.
My ISP is TimeWarner cable - it's much faster than my old DSL connection. I've got two laptops: the MB and a 2 year old Sony Vaio. On most sites, the Sony will display the page within 2 seconds, though photos might take another one or two. The same sites on the MacBook are much harder to predict. Some (not many) will do as well as the Sony. Others will lag, from 5 seconds anywhere up to 20 or even 30 seconds. Usually at that point I say something unprintable under my breath and stop the browser (or it times out). I use Camino and/or Firefox's Mac browser. I also upgraded the RAM in the Mac to 1GB. So, it's good to know I'm not alone, but this is making me rethink whether my next notebook (which I'll need very soon as the MB is promised to my son) should be another Mac. For me, that's huge, as the Sony is work issued. I've been a Mac only buyer for 20 years. |
The first thing to check is whether this is a wireless-related problem or a general networking problem. Check that by connecting with Ethernet instead of Airport and see how it performs.
Next, try to cut the browser out of the equation by downloading large files via the command-line - e.g. with 'curl'. That way you can see if the problem is with data throughput over the network or with browser rendering, etc. Maybe also try the 'http_debug' script I suggested in this older thread: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showpo...91&postcount=7 |
Quote:
Thanks but I'd need more instructions to do this. The command line isn't my native territory. |
To download a file using 'curl', run the following command in a Terminal window:
curl -o mydownload.dat URL_of_file where you would replace "URL_of_file" with the actual URL of the file to be downloaded (e.g. copied & pasted from Safari) and where "mydownload.dat" is the name of the file where you want the download to be stored - this latter can be anything you want - usually you would make it match what the name in the URL is. See the first section of this Unix FAQ for the basics of Terminal usage. |
Not sure if this is the same problem, or just similar in nature. I have a MacBook and my wireless is slow as well.
What I have done is attempt to download a large file from any site an view the progress. It loads perfectly for about 5 to 10 seconds, then it pauses. The pause lasts for about 5 to 10 seconds, then the load continues again at full speed. It almost seems like it is cycling between on and off with the wireless. This happens with anything wireless in nature. With Automatic Updates, Safari, Firefox, Mail. When connected to Ethernet, it flies 100% of the time. So I took the MacBook to my work, and connected to the wireless server there. Same thing. Any other thoughts? I tried istumbler and no interference problems either. I have reinstalled since then too. Mac OSX 10.4.8. |
Download the "Airport Management Tools" that are available via a link on the bottom right of this web page: http://www.apple.com/support/airport/
and look at the throughput (graphed by one of the tools) while you are doing the large download. |
First off, I am a complete newbie to Macs, so forgive me for a lack of knowledge on the system.
I downloaded and tried the monitor, clicked on CONTINUE, and nothing happens with the graphing. I've also tried pinging www.microsoft.com with network utility and it loses all packets. Tried www.rogers.com (my provider) and got 3 packets, lost the rest. Is there something I am missing? |
On a side note... I tried pinging my router. First time, it dropped one of 10 pings. Next time, it dropped 5 of the 10 pings.
|
I'm having the exact same problem with my new MacBook. I even bought a new router thinking the old one had some problems but no - the new one does the same. My iMac via Airport is twice as fast as my MacBook with both routers.
I've tested many different kinds of speedtesters and all give my MacBoo half the speed of my iMac even when the two comps are sitting next to each other and the router between them. |
New information. Brought my macbook into the office tried the wireless network. My pinging to the office's homepage didn't drop a single ping. I however still have a big lag when hitting a new page. Therefore I believe I have two issues. A lag issue when surfing a new page (may be an upload issue, not sure yet), and a communication issue between my router (dlink DI-614+) and my macbook.
|
It might be useful to cut the visual parts of the browser out of the equation by using a text-only browser as a test to see what part of the HTTP transaction is causing a problem.
Try the 'debug_http' script that I outlined in this old thread: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showpo...91&postcount=7 Show us the results and we can help interpret. |
I ran it 4 times. Here are my results. This is at home with my dlink router..
Code:
stuart-burkes-computer:~ Stuart$ debug_http www.apple.com |
Those 'debug_http' results show that your DNS is working fine but that you have an on & off problem with the initial connecting to the www.apple.com server - half the time it is fast in connecting but the other half of the time it takes around 10 seconds to connect.
After the initial connection, it always seems to proceed to download the page at a good speed. I don't know what to conclude from this except that there seems to be an intermittent or periodic problem with your network connection. Check again to make sure that you don't see a lot of noise or other interference on your wireless connection (using the monitoring tools mentioned above) at the times when you are having connection problems (e.g. as seen in the results from 'debug_http') |
Just downloaded iStumbler. My signal is in the 60's and I get noise at 7 or 8 when I sample at 1 second. If I sample at 2 seconds or greater, I get no noise. There is 10 networks in my area, most less than 20 in signal.
|
Here are my results. First with my MacBook:
Code:
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time CurrentCode:
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current |
Absurd:
The second of those 'debug_http' results shows a delay of 7.6 seconds in doing DNS The others have fast DNS, but a few seconds to connect to the web server. |

Thanks for reporting back on your solution. |
I just installed Parallels and Windows2000 on my macbook. Using IE inside the Windows2000 VM, the internet flys with no signs of lag. So there must be a setting of some sort to change for the wireless to work better using OSX.

Brand new 3K MacBook Pro - same thing SLOW wireless
This is ridiculous. I went against my better judgement and bought my first Mac using my work budget (thankfully) and the wireless on this MacBook pro is terrible. I have a Dell running Windows XP and IE and I get page loads in 2-3 seconds, yet this MB Pro takes 25-30 seconds to load a freakin web page. This is absolutely ridiculous. I read all these posters saying check for interference....aren't they reading where the side by side comparisons show there is no problem with interference. It's with this OSX crap. I didn't pay three grand to have this kind of crap, I expected much more. You shouldn't have to pay more and sacrifice performance. I hope someone gets some concrete answers and a fix from MAC soon.

I too have a mac book pro and a powerbook and see the same speed differences.
I believe this is a problem with the 802.11g wireless standard in the mac book pro and the dlink 604+. I don't think the 604+ is compatible with the b or g standard wireless adapter. If any body knows how to configure the 604+ for compatiblilty then it would be good to hear from them. I'm thinking of updating my dlink to the DI-624 as this is combatible with the 802.11g and 802.11b standards |
IT'S WORKING!!! IT'S WORKING!!!
I finally solved my problem. Tossed the D-Link router and went with something new. Grabbed a Belkin Wirless G Router and I am flying. My D-Link router was the DI-614+ model, and nothing but problems with the macbook. I couldn't even get the WPA working on it, just the WEP. On my new Belkin, I have WPA enabled and everything is working perfectly!!! Thank you for everyone's help. |
Thats Great, I will take a look at the Belkin as well!

Problem Solved
Like some previous posters mentioned I really think its a problem with the D-Link 614+ router. I have a Macbook and was also having problems with Airport wireless connection only where it would connect but the transmission is extremely slow. None of my other Windows laptops had this issue and it would work fine when you use an ethernet cable.
There is (was) nothing wrong with my wireless network as all the Windows clients worked just fine. I have 3 wireless routers. The primary is Airlink 101 325W. The other routers are connected (hardwired) to the gateway throughout the house (using some switches along the way) and act like Wireless AP/Repeater/Switch. Ofcourse they all use diff. channel but same SSID and the 2 other routers have DHCP disabled.. Well anyways...one of the "other" routers that acted like a switch was a D-Link 614+. It was not even in the same vicinity where the Macbook is and my Macbook is sitting right next to the Airlink router. I was only using the D-Link as a wired switch but still had wireless enabled in it. Well..I disabled the wireless in D-Link and my wireless network speed on the Macbook increased immediately. No more lag at all. The weird thing is that the Macbook wasnt even picking up the signal from Dlink...it was connected via Airlink...and also the weird thing is that Windows computers dont seem to be affected. Its cool though..D-Link 614+ is not a 802.11G router anyways (whereas all my other routers are)...I think Dlink calls it super 802.11b or something like that? So if you have a Dlink router, especially 614+ ... that could be a problem. |

http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2003/11/30/atheros_super/ and this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_G..._networking%29 This has been reported to cause problems with neighbouring wireless networks since its signals overlap in frequency with those of other channels. |

They call it Enhanced 2.4 Ghz - its like 802.11b but speeds can reach 22Mbps |
DSL-604+ and Macbook Pro
Got a new macbook pro on Friday & it's been driving me nuts all weekend with broadband speeds of less than 100kb/s through my D-link DSL-604+. I've now been able to fix this by turning off the 'Turbo' option in wireless settings on the router as suggested by:
www.expansys.ie/ft.aspx?i=104294&thread=1244 |
Dlink 614
Ok.. after reading this thread, I remembered, the D-LINK 614 has a 4x mode... I have a Mac book and a Powerbook. The Powerbook has been perfect. The Macbook has been totally dying on the wireless. I just turned off the 4x mode.. and everything seems to be running perfectly on the Macbook. I will let everyone know if it acts up again.
|
That 4x thing... Doesn't work...
Nevermind.
|
FWIW, after reading the earlier post regarding CoconutWifi, I have removed it and I do detect a better speed.
No idea why, mind.... Gavin |
Try turning off the 'Turbo' option in wireless settings on the router
|
Hi
For me everything was solved this way. i connect to internet like this >macbook pro c2d/airport express/belkin router/adsl modem/internet>. By setting the airport express unit to 802.11g mode only the problem with veeeeery slow networking was fixed. _______________________ cenna |
I just purchased this MacBook and I am experiencing slow web page loading and definite lags before the page loads. My other computers have no problem what so ever. I just can't believe it would be my wireless router - I have even plugged ethernet directly into my cable modem and I am still experiencing 25 - 30 second web page downloads  . When I try the curl program:
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed 100 3604 0 3604 0 0 464 0 --:--:-- 0:00:07 --:--:-- 1211k 71-12-161-67:~ davidhoytsimpson$ curl www.apple.com -o /dev/null Here is the info on my MacBook Machine Name: MacBook Machine Model: MacBook1,1 Processor Name: Intel Core Duo Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB Memory: 512 MB Bus Speed: 667 MHz Boot ROM Version: MB11.005F.B00 SMC Version: 1.4f12 Has anyone figred out how to correct the problem without buying a new router? |
iStumbler signal and noise
I just downloaded iStumbler and it shows 47/11 signal/noise, freq 16 with one other network showing. What does the signal/noise mean?
|
I have same problem - but solved!
Thank everyone for their inputs. It helps a lot.
I just got a Black MacBook (Core Duo) and am experiencing exactly the same problem. The Apple home page (www.apple.com) loads painfully slow in both Safari and FireFox (over 20 seconds) with either Airport connection or direct ethernet connection to my DSL modem/router by Actiontec (Qwest is the provider). On the other hand, my Dell desktop loads this page just fine (under e seconds). The strange thing is that if I ran a download speed test I can always get 1.2 Mbit so the connection speed appears to be a non-issue. Then I checked the DHCP client list on my router and cannot not find my MacBook on the client list. Just for the kick, I restarted my router and then woola! My new MacBook flies! In the mean time, my MacBook shows up in the DHCP's client list. I'm guessing what happened is that although I set up my Airport card properly (I do have a 128bit WEP key set up in my router), somehow the my MB needs to authenticate itself every time it needs to pull something through my DSL modem/router. Resetting and restarting the router apparently took care of this problem. For someone experiencing the similar problem, this may be a viable solution. Cheers! |
Slow wireless problem
Happy new year everyone and i hope i'm not too late to this thread. I also experienced slow wireless but the cause of my problem is a little different.
I also recently purchased a macbook with Intel Core 2 duo. It connects to my wireless network with WPA encryption straight away and went thru software update and .MAC setup etc.. All went well until i started Safari and try surfing. The speed is dead slow. It felt more like dial-up than adsl broadband (which is what i have). I went to check the internet connection on my PC and it was lightning fast and i went back to the MAC to see what was wrong. First thing i checked was the TCPIP setting and realised there was no DNS IP assigned to the macbook. Without knowing why, i specified the DNS IP (provided by ISP) manually and internet sped up instantly. I tried taking it off and it slowed right down. I'm sure my DHCP is configured corrently and my other PC (also on wireless) is receiving the whole set of IP addresses just fine. Is there some config i missed on the macbook that is causing this? I've read stuff on creating a network from System Preferences but i'm not sure if that helps. |
Quote:
You can check what DNS servers are currently being used by your Mac via the following command (in a Terminal window): cat /etc/resolv.conf Check to see if there is a firmware update for your router. |
I have made some discoveries. I went through the Network Assistant from System Preferences and reconnects the laptop to the wireless. The internet performs as good as it should be this time even without DNS IP.
And i also ran the the command 'cat /etc/resolv.conf ' on the terminal and it did return the 2 DNS IP specified on my router. Thanks. |
Macbook slow wireless - a fix that worked for me
Looks like a number of individuals, including myself, are having the same problem with their Macbook. Internet on my wireless network used to be fine for months and degraded in speed sometime during the past month or two, whereas my other laptop (a Dell) saw none of this problem. I have nothing to back this theory, but I would not be surprised that a recent firmware update or software update triggered the behavior.
In any event, after trying a number of things (network assistant, reset modem,...), the simple fix for me was to manually specify the IPs of my DNS servers. Why is it now necessary for me to specify those beats me. In any event, for those that are unsure where to get the DNS server settings, they are provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and should be on the paperwork you received when you signed up with your ISP. If you don't have any trace of it, call your ISP and ask for a complete network configuration document. Once you have the DNS server names or IPs, follow these steps: Apple menu >> System Preferences... Click on Network Double click on "Airport" Go to the TCP/IP section Enter the name(s)/IP(s) of your DNS server(s) (If you have multiple IPs/Names to enter, remember to enter each one on a separate line) Click the Apply Now button Go on the internet and see if the speed improved. For me it was obvious and immediate. I hope this will help some of you! T. |
Many thanks to Fang and FrenchT for the tip on manually setting the DNS addresses in System Preferences.
I just bought this MacBook and was ready to put it up for sale on ebay (since the return period was over). But, since I love everything about the MacBook, I can keep it now that the internet isn't rediculously slow... Thanks again. |
I just realized I have same problem.
I never really looked at it that much but by looking at this link it made me realise that I too have the same problem. I guess I never noticed it because I've never had wireless internet b4 because my parents just got it a few months back. I have 16mb SKY broadband which I know should be very fast. I also tried that link u put http://www.crailtap.com/c3/feature_f...mp_whatevs.mov and it also 4 me took about 30 secs. What is the problem? The router came with the package so I don't know if I'm allowed to buy a different 1 if that is the problem and it also had NETGEAR so anyway I have same problem and I'm just realizing it so if any1 can help plz do.
P.S. If I seem dumb its becuz I'm very tired as I going to bed now, and also when ever I download things like game demos that are like 600mb it will do it blazing fast wirelessly as I never use cables in about 45mins to an 1hour and a bit, so I know the download is very fast but just loading pages with videos and pictures are slow just like that link above. THX!!! and plz help. |
I too am having issues with slow wireless on my new macbook. I am on a college network, and while I have no issues while plugged into the network, it's the wireless that gives me trouble. I entered the WEP code for it, and it then connected to the wireless, but it runs ridiculously slow in comparison to other people's. My school is very much pro-windows, and I think I'm like one of three kids with a mac, so it's quite likely it has something to do with the school and not macbook. But I ran that test that was suggested and this was my result
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed 100 31805 100 31805 0 0 3011 0 0:00:10 0:00:10 --:--:-- 143k name lookup: 10.124 connect: 10.234 pretransfer: 10.245 starttransfer: 10.347 total: 10.560 I have absolutely no idea what that means, but I was hoping someone might? |
I suppose I should also mention that my wireless worked fine at home.
|
Ok just got off the phone with Sky(even though they don't know anything) and they said that I should be gettin 15mb as from what they can see it is getting that. I checked my speed with this website http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/sp...partner=bc~jmt and I get about 9.30mb Max. Then they told me to go into utilities and go to network utilities and I checked the netstat to "display the state of all sockets" and SKY said I should have less then 10 networks or so but I did it and it all these things of writing and stuff and its waaaaayyyyy more than 10 so SKY said that is the probs I have too many which are taking my speed so question is how the flip to I get all those OFF. Sky said to get their Mcafee which I did and it will scan and bla bla and I did and they're still there. This is making me sooooo mad because 16mb is sooo fast and I'm only gettin 9mb max and I game multiplayers and need the speed 4 hosting servers and bla. PLZ help me somebody. Going MAD.
|
Ok just had a friend over with his PC laptop and he got up to 15mb, where as my macbook would only get like 9.64mb max. This is so annoying. I have a DG834GT NETGEAR router provided by my ISP SKY Broadband. Have tried with cable and still slow.(in fact most of the time slower then my wireless) Rebooting router, going into router settings, changing channels etc. etc. I'm seriously going mad as when I play games like Halo and I check my ping its so high compared to every1 else and avrage person has 8mb. This has been going on 4 so long. I might go to Apple and take it to a super Genius and see what happens, as I know it is not my ISP's fault becuz my friends PC laptop was reaching the speed, and I have called SKY so many times, which by the way is the worse thing I could have done as they just put me on hold on transfer me to all these tech people who then make no difference, and just run up my phone bills. Plz I need help. Anything would be appreciated.:)

DNS settings fixed this - it was same address as my router |
D-Link 614+ Solution
I've got some progress with a D-Link 614+ router and my MacBook. I was dropping about half of my packets and getting crappy performance. Here's what I did to solve my problem (currently running perfect with almost no packet loss whatsoever, and websites are finally loading fast!):
First of all check D-Link.com and make sure you have the latest firmware (3.44 I believe) Login to your router admin page. Click Advanced then click Performance. Change all your settings as so: http://www.rincero.net/dlink.png |
Airport slowdown due to Apple security update?
I noted that my wireless performance (MacBook Pro, Tiger 10.4.9, Linksys router) degraded soon after I used Software update to install Apple's latest security patch. I have tried rebooting computer, Linksys and DSL modem - all to no avail.
Now its seems as though there is a "pause" prior to loading of pages. I have otherwise changed nothing in the system and there are no new netwworks nearby. Perhaps there is an additional security-related "filter" in place now? Just guessing. This slowdown corresponds in time to that noted by several others. |
macbook slow wireless
My wife's shiny new MacBook had tearfully slow Internet connections using our D-Link DI-614+ wireless access point. My old G4 worked fine through wireless, and the MacBook worked fine if you plugged it in with an ethernet cable.
The best way to measure this problem is to ping the router: From the command line, enter "ping 192.168.0.1" (or whatever the IP of the router/WAP is). Let it ping a couple dozen times, then hit Ctl-C to stop pinging. It will give some summary statistics about your pings. The MacBook would lose about 20 to 40% of packets. The old G4 would lose none. I spent a half hour with Apple"Care", who finally sent me off to spend two more hours reinstalling the operating system (!?!? their idea, not mine). This, of course, did no good. Just before throwing in the towel, I tried One More Thing... In the web-based configuration for the D-Link, click the tabs to "Advanced -> Performance" and set the following: TX rates: 1-2-5.5-11 (default is 1-2-5.5-11-22 Mbps) 4X Mode: disabled Then click the "Apply" checkbox so it will restart. Works fine now. :D Apparently, the WAP was trying to talk too fast, and the MacBook ends up losing packets (22 Mbps is NOT a standard speed for 802.11b, which only goes up to 11 Mbps). I guess the G4 never tried to talk that fast in the first place, so it had not been a problem for lo these many years. Now I see this is the solution posted by neikous - I'll put this up again in case anyone else can't get the screenshot image (it didn't come through for me the first time I looked). |
Slow Internet connection on Black Macbook
One day I had a slow Internet connection on the Macbook. Didn't have problem with PC. So I plugged Macbook directly to the DLINK D665 router and it was still slow. I use Sympatico High Speed and was very puzzled since I didn't have this problem before.
How I fixed the problem: 1. Remove any DNS servers from network settings (didn't have this on Macbook since I use DHCP). 2. Remove DNS entries on the router (This is what I had all the time in the router with no problems before). 3. Reboot router and restart Macbook. Wirelesss and Wired connections now fly. Note: I have installed the N-HiFI enabler and updated all Airport Epxress. |
This...
****THIS WORKED FOR ME****
I have been having this issue since I bought the computer. I just never really sat down to figure it out. First thing I did was get rid of the little icon on the toolbar that showed the internet connection and that really sped things up but the pictures were still not loading as fast as I liked. So I played around more and then went into network settings and put in my DNS server info and IT FIXED IT! Thank god, because I just posted it up on Myspace for sale! Well, I guess I don't have to sell it anymore! If anyone has any questions please feel free to AIM, E-mail or whatever me! I know it was really frustrating for me to see everyone post that they had a problem and then not post that they fixed it and how. So, feel free to ask away! Thanks FESTER:cool: |
Dlink 624
I had the same issue and was totally bummed.
Here is how i sorted my netowrk out. Logged into the Dlink access point. Clicked on wirless and then advanced. Disabled Wireless Qos(WMM). Verified that superG was off. Thanks everyone. |
This thread is the best one on the topic I've come across during the last intense 24 hours of trying to find a solution to my problem. With a few days left of my return period I might have to return my Macbook and stick with PC. I was an excited convert until yesterday..
The wireless connection is really slow with my Macbook. I can't say it's bad when using the internet since internet is sometimes slow, but, it's obviously slow on the wireless LAN we have at home. I summarise the problem: 1. I have a BT Voyager 2110 wireless router. Conecting to it with a cable is no problem. Good fast speed. But using wireless means problems. 2. Sometimes my Macbook even have a hard time detecting the network. I feed it with all details (WEP, etc).. Eventually (could be many, many minutes after "fiddling") it detects it. Then I have full good signal. I am next to the router. 3. Transferring files (wireless) from another computer on the network is slow. Really slow sometimes. All traffic is slow (VNC, SSH, etc). If I use the cable it's fast. With the wireless I can be stuck at below 100 kb/s sometimes. With cable it's often 1100 kb/s. Something funny is going on with the wireless. 4. Most important of all: My Macbook is the only computer we have at home which has this problem. The others (PCs) work just great at around 1100 kb/s over the wireless LAN when transferring files. I have fiddled with settings for the router, I have read this thread, but I can't solve the problem. I will have to go back to PC if I can't solve this in the next few days. I need wireless in my home. Any ideas of how to remedy this problem with BT Voyager 2110 router and Macbook? |
This is the best thread I've found so far on my problem. I am so close to return my Macbook. I just converted and I am not happy! I will go back to PC if I can't remedy the wireless problem with my Macbook shortly (in a few days before the return period goes out).
I have narrowed down the problem to the router. The slow connection is obvious when I connect to other computers on our wireless LAN. Normally we transfer files at 1100 kb/s speed but with my Macbook it's sometimes less than 100 kb/s. I can summarise the problem as follows: 1. I use a BT Voyager 2110 wireless router. Connecting to it with a cable means good fast speed in all situations. Using wireless means problem. 2. I have noticed that the Macbook sometimes has a hard time detecting the router. It can take minutes of "fiddling" before it finally detects it. Then I have full good signal and I'm sitting next to the router. 3. File transfer, VNC, SSH connection, etc (on our LAN), is really slow when I use wireless. Sometimes it's as "good" as 400 kb/s but sometimes it's below 100 kb/s. I cannot solve this problem? Do I have to go back to PC? Does anyone have any solution that work in my case? I cannot really apply the solutions posted earlier in this thread although the problem seem to be similar. My router is this BT Voyager 2110. Anyone? |
I solved the problem I described above. I changed the channel on the router to 11. Tech support told me that Macbook prefers 11, then 2 and then 6. I tried number 2 yesterday and it was still bad. However, channel 11 solved my problems. Now the wireless is fast as with cable.

Same Problems with Santa Rosa MBP
I've been reading this forum and have applied several fixes, but my new 2.2ghz MBP is still not running the net at speed. It is definitely the router (D-link 614+) because when hardwired through E-net it works fine. I tried DLing the latest firmware for the router but got a seemingly unuseable file: "NML.MEM". I'd like to install it but am not sure of how to do it. Any help?

I'll throw my $0.02 in here. I purchased a MacBook two weeks ago. I use a Dlink DIR-625 router. I also have my work laptop, IBM ThinkPad (wireless), and my iMAC (ethernet) in my home network. The wireless on the MacBook was terrible. I did a ping from the MacBook to, say, www.google.com, and I was experiencing a 40% loss in packets. I noticed in the router that the IBM and iMAC were connected at 802.11g, and the MacBook at 802.11n. I changed the router to "802.11g only" to force the MacBook to 802.11g, and it works just fine now. I rechecked the ping, and got 0% packet loss. I don't understand why the 802.11n performed so badly, but I have left it at 802.11g. Has anybody else experienced this?

Solution To Slow Speed
History
^^^^ My D-Link WBR-1310 was fine with pc laptop wireless but NOT with my new macbook pro 2.2ghz My new laptop was attempting to run the wifi 811b protocol instead of the quicker g protocol. Quick fix. router - change setting to use only 802.11g save hard power off the router. the setting doesn't seem to come in to effect after setting was just saved. Unplug wireless router. wait 10 seconds. replug. Another setting I did change but I don't think matters is auto scan channel. I have it checked off That worked for me. I hope it does for you. |
Just used a client's New MBP. I also had this problem with a client's slow MBP. I re-installed the drivers that came with the new Apple base station and everything seemed fine. 802.11n is the draft spec, so its not finalised, but it shouldn't be causing problems like this - should it?

Belkin pre-n problem solved
Hello everybody,
I've never used a forum before, was despairing at how slow my new MacBook was on wifi, staggered to find a full breakdown of just about every possibility here on this thread! I use a Belkin pre-n router, have a couple of pc's on the network, nothing seemed to work but the simplest suggestion ( selecting g only on the router settings, it had been on b or g ) has made the macbook fly. (Now all I have to get my head round is hard drive formats for shared mac/pc use...) Thanks to all - Wojtek, Edinburgh |
MacBook Slowdown Wireless
I have a MacBook 2Gig 2GHz and was having Internet slowdown issues as well. In some ways I was lucky to be able to diagnose the problem, because when I first got my MacBook, the wireless connection worked at first, then I updated the wireless airport driver through software update and the wireless connection broke completely when using WEP Encryption. The software has been updated to fix thsi issue but it seems like a partial fix only.
So the Solution is not great - Disable Encryption on your Wireless Network and wait for Apple to release drivers that will handle Encryption without the huge lag time. Share your connection with your neighbours for awhile (or some routers allow you to ban MAC Addresses other than your own) But with an open wireless network, browsing is fast as it should be. Sorry for the news... |

When I first got my MacBook I noticed that some videos (streaming) on the internet would just stop loading halfway or just load very slowly. It's not the website because I tried testing load times for a few videos between my PC and Mac. It sucks when a youtube video stops right when it gets to the good part! So I started searching forums about this issue and found similar answers (changing router configs or network settings). None of the solutions have worked for my MacBook (2.16ghz 1gig ram) so far.
I'm not 100% sure if this is a solution for me yet, but I just noticed that there are no problems with internet lag whatsoever when I have my Power Adapter charging my MacBook. My MacBook is set too "Better Performance Settings" on both battery and power adapter so I don't understand why this is making a difference. More power for the computer to work off when plugged in??? This sounds pretty dumb to me too, but can some people try this out and post if you noticed a difference? It's really obvious on my laptop because I'll start a long youtube vid wait for it to pause because it's loading so slow, then once I plug in my adapter the video loads just as fast as my PC, pull the adapter out and back to turtle speeds. Other than this internet issue my new MacBook runs like a champ! |
WiFi Problems
Indeed my problem was out when I removed CoconutWiFi.
Thanks for all your posts! |
Hey guys,
I read about all the problems with the macbook... i just solved my macbook internet problem. I called applecare support, and they told me to turn off my computer. Then take out the battery. And with the battery taken out hold the power button for 10 seconds. then release. Put the battery back inside of the computer and turn on the computer. This should restart the hardware. I'm not too tech savvy, so I don't know exactly what happened... but my internet works fine now. GOod luck! |
SOLVED !! MBP + Airport Extreme WAS so slow
Hi,
After hours of testing, I've just solved my problem. Pings were oscillating between <1 ms and > 5000 ms !! Lost packets were from 2 to 17%. I switch off the encryption, and it went fine. Then I switch WPA2 on, and it was still fine. For compatibility with an old PC around, I was using WEP; it seems that WEP is not well implemented (drivers ?). For me, the problem is solved, and I strongly suggested to check weither or not you are using WEP. If so, just switch to WPA2 (which is much more secure btw). Christian http://www.intellicore.net |

If that doesn't work let me know I have a few more suggestions. davidgalbraith |
I got problems with the wireless after installing Leopard. I had packet loss around 40-50% connected to a netgear wgr614v7.
My problems were solved by setting it to use G mode only. |
SOLUTION: web pages load slowly with a new airport extreme base station
I've tried everything on this forum, and spent hours booting, rebooting, setting DNS, blah blah.
I even called Apple support and spent some time with them. Fortunately, we found a solution. My solution was simple, and it will ONLY work if you have 802.11n capable wireless laptops: 1) Go to the Airport Utility (in your Utilities folder) 2) Select your Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS for short) 3) Double click the icon or select Manual 4) Click on the Wireless tab 5) Change the Radio frequency to 802.11n ONLY in the 5GHz range 6) Update What this does is get you in a frequency with very low traffic (since it's pretty new). Things like other wireless connections and 900MHz phones will no longer disrupt your service. Again, this will only work with the 802.11n capable laptops. Fortunately, our house is all up to date. Good luck. |
My (latest) MB is d/l at about one third of the speed of the Intel iMac sat next to it. Both on wireless to the same D-Link router. Beats me. The MB is no longer a new model, there has been plenty of time to fix whatever the issue is.

Help
Hey guys,
Like all of you, I'm having trouble with my wireless connection. I bought my MacBook (10.4.11 - Tiger) 5 months ago, and every now and then it gives me minor heart attacks because the wireless connection suddenly becomes very very slow. And for this past week, this appears to be the case once again. I don't know what goes on; all of the other laptops in my house run very fast, it's only my precious MacBook (which I am currently hating on the verge of destruction) that turns against me. I've checked some of the suggestions of this board but the thing is - I'm somewhat computer illiterate when it comes to the more complicated stuff. I downloaded the iStumbler but it serves to no purpose because I have no idea what it does and I am also lost in the dark with all this "802.11n,g," discussion. Can someone please "baby talk" me through this one? Much appreciated!! |
I've been having the same problem as guitar hero with video streaming slow unless plugged in. what did you do ?

Slow Wireless, WPA2
Hi all,
I was having the same problem as all of you...flakey internet, especially on streaming video (like youtube). I tried nearly everything, but following the advice of one poster, I put my router in WPA2 mode. It is working better than it ever has been. Thanks for the thread! I hope I helped :) |
I have the Alum. Mac Book since Dec. 2008. I run it on Safari, using a wireless Lynx G router. Nothing has changed since I have owned it. Lately any web page loads real slow. I am new to Mac. I do not understand most of what is being said on this post. Can someone tell me in laymans terms how to solve this problem. I have apple care but not sure if they can help. I would relly appreciate it.
