Ordered a New Mac! (finally)

I have been mulling over the purchase of a new Mac for the past 4-5 months, and I finally just did it! This new machine will either complement or replace (if i find i am not using it at all) my current 3+ year old (out of warranty :() 1GHz Titanium PowerBook which has been nothing but perfect to me.

I'm splitting it with my parents, who said they'd like to pay half as a graduation present (I did not argue :P).

Anyway, i couldn't be more pleased with the purchase!

I had been holding out for a Core 2 Duo MBP, when it occurred to me that i don't really use the portability that a laptop offers. I decided, for around the same money i could get a nice souped up 24" (2 FEET!) iMac instead.

on to the specs!

OK, there's been a mistake. The iMac you got is suspiciously similar to the one I've been wishing for. This must be a mixup, so please just go ahead and ship the iMac to me. :D

MBHockey 09-23-2006 09:17 PM

haha...I'll have to look into it ;)

Also, i found it interesting an extra 1GB of ram was $158 from Apple as opposed to $190 from Crucial.com

Pretty sweet!

johngpt 09-24-2006 01:26 AM

Way cool!

I'm salivating.

While it won't be soon, I think I'm getting my wife to come around to the mac side. I think when her HP notebook finally gets too frustrating for her, she might be willing to look at a macbook.

I'd talk her into an iMac, but if she gets a macbook, then we'll be able to take it with us on vacations and trips to see her folks. Then I'll have something to keep me occupied and hopefully out of trouble.

That makes a lot of sense – we do pay a huge premium when purchasing a laptop. Besides, you still have your TiBook for those occasions when you do require portability. (I’m still using a PowerBook with a "mere" 1GH processor and find it doesn’t limit me in the slightest.)

Congratulations! :)

Phat—

Nice machine, I hope you get some good work done with that monster!

pantherman13 09-24-2006 05:00 PM

I got a 20", Core 2 Duo iMac about 2 weeks ago. I love it.

In fact, I not loathe using my iBook G4.

MBHockey 09-24-2006 05:42 PM

haha really. I don't think i could ever loathe my TiBook! ;)

pantherman13 09-24-2006 06:19 PM

Once you get used to the speed of your iMac, and you go and use your TiBook, you will be sad.

Nor I my ancient Duo. Granted, the screen was a glaring orangey monochrome and it would be considered a fossil by today’s standard – but it gave me portability, which was amazing at the time, and I did lots of valuable work on that machine.

Got an email at 1 AM saying it shipped! Sweet!

Except, why is it shipping from Shanghai, CN? That means China right? I'm in NY!

Shanghai means China.
I had the same with my 5G iPod last year. Also: shipping: does this mean a boat or an aeroplane? ;)

cwtnospam 09-26-2006 01:21 PM

I'm glad it's shipping, but how did you get my address?

MBHockey 09-26-2006 03:14 PM

hahahah ;)

I believe it is by plane, estimated delivery (from Apple's shipment notification email) says this Friday, the 29th!

MBHockey 09-28-2006 12:50 PM

It came a day early!!

I'm typing away on my new 24" iMac.

If you haven't seen one of these in person, then you don't realize how big it is. Pictures don't do it justice.

It is beautifully bright and worked perfectly out of the box. No dead pixels, no buzzing noise when the brightness is not at 100%.

It is just magnificent. I will get some pictures up later when my digital camera is charged up.

This thing is lighting fast compared to my TiBook. I went over to BenchJS and it did the series of tests in 2.942 seconds, faster than any time there by a good margin (for some reason though, i can't submit my score...maybe a problem with Safari?)

:D

Hmm, I think 24" is actually too big for my tastes. I would like to get the 20", but with the GPU from the 24". Why? I play a lot of games when I have time.

MBHockey 09-28-2006 02:03 PM

Yeah, it is pretty big. I don't think it's too big...not yet at least ;)

ThreeBKK 09-28-2006 02:06 PM

How do regular DVDs look at that size? I mean they only have a 720x480 resolution. Are they very rough looking or does the scaling software/hardware make up for it?

I don't know about that. I was in an Apple store the other day, and I have to say that the 30" Cinema Display was very easy to get used to. A 24" might seem small if you spent some time with that.

Unfortunately, the iTunes Movie purchases look awful on this screen. You can see a lot of glitching and stuff going on. I've tried on DVD, a rather old one, and it didn't stretch to fit the entire screen sideways, so it was letterboxed on top and bottom!

HD trailers, on he other hand, are gorgeous!

Here are some pics of the new setup:

Better letterboxed than cropped, although I know some people would disagree. I would much rather see a move the way the director and cameraman intended, even if that does mean a smaller image and black areas at top and bottom.

johngpt 09-29-2006 10:24 PM

Nice set up!

That thing is huge! With a desk that small, you're right on top of it, so there'll be a tendency toward eye strain.

Does that model come with bluetooth? If so, eventually you could get keyboard and mouse unwired, and be at a slightly better ergonomic distance for vision. 65 cm to 70 cm from the display is often used as a good distance in the ergonomic literature. Googling it should give you more info.

Have gobs of fun. :D

MBHockey 09-30-2006 10:20 AM

Thanks. :)

Yeah i have it set up in the corner, and i have my chair pretty far back. I'd say i'm at least 3 feet from the screen at all times

johngpt 09-30-2006 11:20 AM

You are wise beyond your years, oh young one. :p

Or was that wise between your ears...

Or...

Dang it, I get so confused!
