unlock 256 x 256 icons ?

is there a way to unlock 256 X 256 icon support in Tiger? From some things i read, it is actually built in, just not activated. Thanks.

Mikey-San 09-21-2006 10:58 AM

Tiger does not support the display of icons at 256x256 size.

cwk1234 09-23-2006 07:51 PM

me guna cry

ThreeDee 09-23-2006 09:44 PM

Uhm, there aren't even any 256x256 icon files in any apps yet! Even if tiger had a secret 'feature' to enlarge the icons, they would look all bitmapped and fuzzy.

cwk1234 09-23-2006 11:23 PM

ok, i realize that, but for instance the crappy vista rc already has it , most mod sites have 256 icons, anyways from what i had read , i understood that early internal builds of tiger had 256 icons working but it was abandoned in order to save time....so i was wondering if it was something that could be "turned on" somehow... i assumed i couldnt but, you never know!

ThreeDee 09-24-2006 09:54 AM

It is rumored that Lepoard will have 512x512 icons. :)

chabig 09-24-2006 01:55 PM

I heard 1024 x 1024. ;-)

cwk1234 09-24-2006 06:01 PM

meh, 512 maybe ...they better do it , if vista has 256 , apple will have to do more, plus its an easy little thing to add

So an unreleased product that's been in development for several years will, when released, have something that a two-year-old product doesn't? I don't understand what you're trying to say. You should be comparing Vista to Leopard (even though Tiger still is looking to be better overall).

"Early internal builds of Tiger had 256x256 icons working but it was abandoned in order to save time" totally sounds like some junk from a rumour site. It's certainly reasonable that the UI teams have done some experimentation or work on this, but for it to be "understood" is a bit of a leap. ;)

cwk1234 09-25-2006 02:51 AM

well, maybe it was junk, who knows ...but comparing Vista to Leopard makes perfect sense.. (I know Tiger , and even 10.1 is and was a better OS than vista)
I figured that since they will be on the market around the same time that it made sense to compare from a feature standpoint anyways this thread is dumb now, i just wanted to know if there was any truth in what i had read, and if there was a way to get this feature without waiting for Leopard. because some icons i've gotten recently were 256.. so thats that bleh

Please note that if you went to WWDC or have ADC access to 10.5 betas, you shouldn't be talking about it at all. Is this so difficult for people to grasp?

Nope, not at all.

Off topic, but I remember when "Finder" aliases were 4KB in size. These days, they can get up into 80+ KB range because of the multiple icon sizes (currently up to 128x128) stored in there, even for a "standard" file with no custom icon. So if "Leopard" gets 256x256 (or larger) icons, are alias files going to jump to 200KB? I don't really have a point, but I just thought it was funny that it might end up taking 50 times the disk space to do the same thing, which is basically just to point to another file...

Indeed, Finder alias files contain resource forks which contain icns data of the original file. There's a reason for this:

Picture a user who's made a bunch of aliases to files. Now imagine a scenario where the aliases' icons are just pointers to the icon file iniside the application bundle or the original files themselves. Now, one day the user deletes either the original files or the application to which the files belong.

Now the user has a bunch of "blank document" icons for aliases, and not a reliable way to figure out what they once were. (Remember, you can rename aliases and they'll work just fine, so you cannot rely on the name of the file giving the user any indication as to what happened four months ago.)

It's good that aliases include icon data, and honestly, HD space is really cheap. There's just no way that you're making that many aliases that it's an issue. ;)

I know this is vague but back when I had my iMac 333 and Panther, I came across some sort of UNIX/Terminal tutorial and the first excercise was to make the Desktop icons larger than 128 picels. I had mine set to 256 pixels on the desktop but I do not have a clue how I did it. I will begin searching for that tutorial but it is possible to have icons larger than 128 px.

cwk1234 11-28-2006 05:35 AM

ok i found this from apple, it says Tiger does support 256x256 icons...

IconServices Support

con Services in Tiger has been extended to support icons that are 256 x 256 pixel in size. To support these larger icons, a new icon type selector has been added for you to use in calls to SetIconFamilyData and GetIconFamilyData. The selector is kIconServices256PixelDataARGB and is defined in IconStorage.h.

With SetIconFamilyData, a non-premultiplied 256x256 ARGB bitmap should be provided as input and IconServices will compress it before storing it in the ICNS container.

With GetIconFamilyData an uncompressed raw 256x256 ARGB bitmap is returned. The only difference is that the returned image contains the alpha channel where for the previously supported icon sizes there are 2 separate selectors: one for the mask and one for the data.

AHunter3 11-28-2006 08:23 AM

As long as I can still set them to 32 x 32.

cwk1234 11-29-2006 12:11 AM

does any1 with more knowledge of the terminal etc , know how to implement this with the info provided, or is it not intended for that?

kungfumath 01-11-2007 09:53 AM

So, 48 X 48 is plenty big for the desktop. My user folder, and only that folder, is set to 96 X 96, and they're huge! Why would anyone want the icon to be any bigger? If you're having trouble seeing, reduce the resolution of your display. You won't notice that it's all fuzzy and pixelated, as you can't see it very well anyway.

Or perhaps this is just one of those "bigger is better" things. If that were the case, computers wouldn't be the size they are today.

Adding 512x512 icons to Firefox...

ehird 02-05-2007 07:44 AM

Bleh. I want SVG icons. Think, the current level of detail (well, more, considering the "infinite pixels" to play with), but infinite scalability. It could be an option for those older macs ;) but once that's done, we need the UI as SVG. Think, distortionless zooming! :D

10464.net 02-06-2007 05:20 AM

or you could use pathfinder. This Finder replacement supports 256 icons

DarkSaint 02-06-2007 11:06 AM

I think I can live with 128x128 icons. If the only thing Vista can tout is that it can render 256x256 icons, I guess they win the big prize :P
