CrossOver for Mac now in public Beta!

http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/

I won't be able to test it until next week (when I get my iMac), but those hear with Intel Macs could try it.

Feedback?

fat elvis 08-31-2006 06:23 PM

I'm gonna play with it tonight. Just got some Mac Book Pros in, so after installing MacSabre I'm gonna see if/how Outlook 2003 works on CrossOver.

Jay Carr 08-31-2006 09:06 PM

How does it work exactly? I searched the site but couldn't find much of an explanation. Are they just pulling in a bunch of .dll's or something?

Carl Stawicki 08-31-2006 11:49 PM

I just tried Office 2003 a little and it seems to work fine. I need more time on it, though.

You have cheapened us all ;)

BTW the laughter at the start was a little Maniacal Über-fiend...has the dark side corrupted you? :D

Never!

After the scrub down.... me and iMac decided what we had done was wrong... and we both decided never to do it again!

IE flickered some for me, and I can't be too fast with the scroll wheel of my Mighty Mouse.

I can see using this to test my family website, but hopefully not much else.

Me too.... but the second time I launched it.... it was fine... and has been since....

fat elvis 09-01-2006 03:59 PM

so far I'm impressed, Outlook on my Mac is surreal. I've had wet dreams of this moment. :D

...time for a cigarette

Jay Carr 09-01-2006 07:35 PM

Weird, fat elvis, weird.

Did auto-cad work Photek?

ThreeDee 09-01-2006 08:27 PM

BTW, DarWINE is supposed to do this, except it hasn't really be updated much.

Its only usable if you have a degree in computer science.... not for ludites like me!

GavinBKK 09-02-2006 06:24 AM

Er, um....Luddite... :-)

Does using this expose us to Windows virii?

I dont *think* so...but haven't tested it for that. Although only a beta, CrossOver seems like a well executed application. The installation couldn't be easier. Installing Windows applications was also pain free.

My main gripe is the lack of cooperation between the OSes (i.e. Copy/Paste, File Association, etc.).

Is that as in "cannot do that period", or is it variable by application?

So far I've only tried Outlook, trying to open a Word attachment. I could not find a setting to "open in Word for Mac OS" or something like that. I haven't done more than 15-minutes of testing. When I hav a chance to work with it some more I'll post back.

tlarkin 09-05-2006 05:19 PM

well i just got our first mac pro in. The user mentioned she would like to have the functionalilty of running windows apps so i think i will give this a shot sometime this week.

The mac right now is running through the copious amounts of design software to be installed and then it will be imaged to our server so there is a master image of it.

Once thats established I'll have a little fun with it, so if it crashes I can just pull that 'known good' image back down the network.

tlarkin 09-06-2006 10:36 AM

installed putty.exe for windows on it and created several secure ssh tunnels to my router at home via putty and even remote desktop.

only down side is that putty.exe takes like a few seconds to load on a PC where it took a bit to load on OS X. Granted this is a beta, so I am not expecting it to run like it will when its finished.

so far, its pretty cool

CrossOver with Blackberry?

Has anyone tried installing the BB Desktop software?

I just keep getting a message saying that the installer was interrupted and it fails.

Any pointers appreciated.
Thanks

Gavin

evildrbob 09-27-2006 01:15 PM

Wishing for Blackberry Crossover....

...I tried this numerous times too. Same result.

If Crossover had an easy way of contacting them maybe we could let them know that we'd buy it if it supported BB. But the way their ticket system currently is setup requires that you buy first.

Uh-uh.

I'm not buying it in the HOPES that it will do what I need. Wake up, Codeweavers.

GavinBKK 09-28-2006 01:43 AM

Yes, frustrating, nichtwar?

I am trying to do a firmware upgrade on a BB 7100v and I have resorted to booting Windows from my daughter's dual-boot MB. Still d/l the file from BB. What a nightmare getting the Windows online! Anyway, done now, so will advise if all goes swimmingly.....or not.
Cheers,
Gavin

GavinBKK 09-30-2006 03:36 AM

Well, in the end, the BB Firmware upgrade was done, at long last.

Made me glad to be a switcher, though. Does Windows do anything at all, without making such a meal of it? As a point of interest, if anyone does this, it may seem as though the BB has hung after it's final restart but it doesn't; it just takes about 20 minutes to complete the reboot.

Cheers,
Gavin
