Whenever I open Entourage I receive the error message "This action could not be completed. An unknown error (16008)" Any help would be appreciated.

Try trashing Entourage's prefs. Look at /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist and also look in /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/Microsoft at Entourage Preferences and Entourage Settings.

(You haven't told us exactly which version of Entourage, so you may or may not have all of these files.)

Entourage

Delete files as advised. Problem still exists. I'm using Entourage version 11.2.5.

You can view your computer's various log files easily using an app known as 'Console', which is in /Applications/Utilities.

Launch Console, check your system.log and console.log (if they aren't immediately visible, click the "Logs" button in the button bar and select them).

What messages appear at the same time that you attempt to launch Entourage? Please copy/paste them here for us to see. Note that most of the messages will have a date/time stamp so that you can check when they were added to the log.

How to restore database...tricky

Hi guys... newbie here :)

I lost my very important Entourage database with tons of notes, contacts, calendar events, etc....

but i found some kind of reference data for the database in a "caches" folder found in my old user account: Library>Caches>Metadata>Microsoft>Entourage>2004>Main Identity>

Within this "main identity" folder there are folders for "contacts", "event", messages, notes, and tasks. and there's a file called "index".

in these folders... for instance, the "contacts" folder... there are dozens if not hundreds of files that all have this suffix: ".vRge" in their name.

I can't open these files, but is there a way to convert these ".vRge" files into real, working Entourage data files??? Can i get my Contacts, Notes, Events, etc. back with these files???

Thanks for your time.

codybear.

See if anything on the Entourage FAQ site is of help:
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/index.html
Consider asking there for help.

Note that entrusting your data to an application with an undocumented database format and no recent backups is a recipe for disaster.

Either backup religiously or prefer apps where you can read the datafiles without problems.

Entourage

I'm in the same boat. The culprit seems to be a blank email that has NO SENDER and NO SUBJECT. Grrrrr.

I'm using Entourage X v10.1.6. I started a whole new identity a few days ago. Just this morning I got another blank email, which I COULD delete, but WHERE ARE THESE COMING FROM and is it possible from stopping them from getting to me?

This is most frustrating.
Thanks,
Mary

If your ISP has a web mail interface as well as POP mail capability (or IMAP, as the case may be), you may be able to set your account there to filter the mail before Entourage tries to download it. Most ISPs try to filter obvious spam before it gets to you. Certainly, mail with neither sender nor subject information is likely to be spam.

It is also often possible to delete corrupt or unwanted messages from your web account more easily than from your local mailer. We've often had instances where a corrupt piece of mail caused problems (or where a person was sent a very large video file that was unsolicited, but not malicious, but would take a long time to download and prevented normal mail from arriving until it had been processed) and we were able to resolve it at that level.

Now, it helps a little that we run our own mail server, but your ISP should be able to provide the same kind of service.

This is going to be an on-going battle; as spam filters get better, spammers work harder to get around them. I've reduced, but not eliminated, the amount of spam our users receive by modifying the response time from our smtp server. Spammers usually can't afford to wait very long for a response because of the volume of crap they are sending, so if the smtp server waits 15 seconds before responding, the spammer's mailer has often given up. Legitimate mail systems are more patient. As far as I know, we haven't lost any legitiamate mail as a result of this approach.

Entourage just doesn't have a very configurable filter compared with some other programs. Probably, that will change in the future--at least, I hope it will.

Joe,

Thanks for the quick reply. The reason I use an email client such as Entourage is that I don't like using my web account because it seems to go off line quite often (like in the middle of writing an email) and then asks me to sign-in again a lot. Yes, I'm on high speed cable. Go figure.

Can you tell me in lay terms (I'm an artist basically) what I should do? Call my server (which is changing from Adelphia to Time Warner/Road Runner as we speak) and ask them to block these sender-less, subject-less emails?

And one more question, do you think that Eudora has a "more configurable" filter than Entourage? I'm about ready to switch.

Thanks again,
Mary

JDV 11-14-2006 11:14 AM

Eudora uses heuristics to determine what counts as "junk", so as you mark a message as junk mail, Eudora "learns" what to filter out and what to let through. Alternatively, you can check the junk-mail mailbox periodically to see if anything has been marked as junk which you actually want to receive. In this way, it gets better as time goes on at filtering spam.

We use Kerio Mailserver as our mail program, and I have it set to reject any message that does not have sender information OR a subject line, so that never even gets to the point of a spam filter. Most mailers give a warning if you try to send a message with no subject line, so it is unlikely that legitimate mail will come with no subject.

Yes, I would contact the postmaster of the ISP you are using and see what options you have for preventing such mail from reaching you. Every postmaster I know is struggling with this and I'm certain will assist to whatever degree they can to reduce the problem. Even those who may not find porn offensive in itself are usually not happy to have their mailbox filled with such materials. I have the advantage of being small and know what our users can tolerate, so I have some latitude in adjusting our system to a degree that may not be possible with a large company with heterogenous clients, but the fundamental problem is the same, big or small. None of our clients want to be buried in an avalanche of unwanted, tasteless, and potentially dangerous e-mail.

My signature in Entourage is set up to only use 'small, medium, big, etc' font sizes... It won't let me select pixel sizes... Has anyone had this issue before it's driving me crazy?

Calendar work week in 2008

In Entourage 2004, when I would click on a week in the minicalendar, the view in the calendar would stay in work week. In 2008, the view defaults to day. Is there a way to get it to default to work week in 2008? I know I can right click on the minicalendar to get that view, but it would be nicer for me to have it as the default. Thanks in advance.

Email lag time

I have just begun using Entourage and my emails seem to be coming in with a lag or even somewhat randomly a day after they have been sent. For instance, yesterday i received a new email that was actually two days old already. Is this something in my settings? Any ideas? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

I seem to remember getting blank emails sometime ago. I managed to delete them by selecting any email to delete and then commanding clicking the culprit too, thus selecting 2 emails...you can then delete both. Clicking only on the culprit did not work.

It's next to impossible. See this page for more info.

BTW, running 11.0 means you have never updated. The software is 6 yrs old and if you applied the updaters, you would have a much more stable product.

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.6 Update releasedAug 10, 2010. 59.2 MB. This is a combo updater and contains all previous updates!

DeltaMac 09-21-2010 06:04 PM

And, even 11.5.6 is out-of-date. That link does take you to the current 11.6.0 updater, which, again is a combo updater.

dianeross 09-22-2010 07:25 PM

That's what I get for copy/paste. I had the right link but the wrong text. sorry!

Hi. When I try to retrieve messages on Entourage, I am getting the message "out of memory" "cannot retrieve". I trashed all my deleted messages (13,000), ran Onyx which says I have no problems and rebooted. Same message, although one occasionally leaks through...25 waiting. Any ideas?
