Can't Install Palm 4.0
Long story short:
Tried installing Palm Desktop 4.0 a few months ago but it wouldn't install. My palm IIIxe had never crashed so I decided to live on the edge... bad idea:( . Learning my lesson, I tried installing 4.0 again. The installation goes fine until it gets to around the 450th item when I get the message that it can not complete installation because items are missing (what items  ). Anyone run into this or have any idea how to install. I'm running 10.1.5 (384 megs)? mel ps - I downloaded the file from palm support. |
I didn't have any problems installing Palm Desktop 4.0. in 10.1.5 and Jag.

some progress
Well, I installed 4.0 on my 9.x volume and then transfered the folder to my osx volume from there. That seemed to work, but now when I attempt to 'edit users' I get a message that hotsync has quit because of a conflict (I'm not at my home computer, so I'm not sure of the wording). If I remove hotsync, clicking on 'edit users' does nothing. Obviously, I can't perform any hotsyncing.
Any ideas? It just shouldn't be this hard to install software. mel |
Palm desktop 4.0/4.1 install fails
I am having the exact same problem now. I have tried installing both the 4.0 and 4.1 palm desktop, and both fail around file number 450. I think the file is "Palm Hotsync", for that is the filename displayed when the error msg is displayed. I have tried variations of custum install / retry failed install, nothing works.
I am running 10.1.5 and prior to this I was successfully using palm desktop 2.6.3 under OS 9 emulation. Not that I think it matters, but I have a Pismo (Powerbook Firewire) with 640 MB ram and about 300 MB of free disk space. Right now I'm dead in the water, unless I go back and install the 2.6.3. I'm hoping that all my data will be there when I finally do get a desktop installed. (I did a hotsync right before and haven't been using my palm since). any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks pdmazz |
The way I finally got it to work, was to back everything up and then remove all traces of the palm software from my computer. I then installed and everything went fine.
I have no idea why that worked, but the important thing is to backup so that you still have all your information. HTH melg |
Yup, Palm 4.1 Be CareFul etc.
RE: Yup, Try Palm 4.1 but be Careful etc.
First: Missing Link caused problems like this too on a number of machines (Missing link lets Sony Clie's Mount Memory stick and move music etc [oterhwise unecessary]). Suggest Stick reader instead. Second: Yes Removing all traces of Palm Helps reinstall Missing Link or not. Some files get locked and installer has trouble over writing over them Third: ****** Palm Desktop 4.1 is Cool. But Be Careful to Change Hot Sync Settings and Turn OFF Pictures and other things your Palm Pilot DOES NOT Support. If you have Zire 71 fine. In my case a humble old Palm V crashes miserably durring a hotsync where you do not disable Picture Hot Sync. |
no dice on 4.0 install yet
Guys,
thanks for you input. I've removed everything related to palm from the system, but it still gets the file not found error and stops. This is all under 10.15. I have decided to stick with 4.0 instead of 4.1, for I have a Handspring and that's what they say works (as to maybe working on 4.1). Anyway, my next attempt is to be to install it under OS 9 and see what happens. |

4.0 installed, but hangs on OS X
Team,
I was able to get desktop 4.0 installed by booting into OS 9 and doing the install. The desktop came up successfully. I did not try to hotsync. I then rebooted into OS X, and brought up the desktop. It will display the Datebook window, but the desktop is not usable, for the little rainbow wheel is still spinning, not to mention something is accessing my hard drive. Even though the desktop is in my OS 9 Application folder, it did not bringup OS 9 emulation. Moving the Palm app folder to the regular Application folder has no effect. I looked for updates to the 4.0 desktop, but did not see any. Any ideas? ps. How do I tell OS X that I want a certain application to launch inside of Classic? |
Palm 4 and 4.1 are X Native
Palm 4 and 4.1 are X Native:
---------------------------------------------------- 9 and Classic was a three versions Back 2.63 and...... I do not know if their is a 9 version of 4..... ------------------------------------------------------------ Applications Folder is for X Apllicaitons OS9 Folder is for 9 and Classic ------------------------------- Older Non X versions of Palm Did run in Classic mode fine but Yuck. |

Beats me I could test with my Wifes which is still on 3.5
Beats me, I could test with my Wifes which is still on 3.5......
I do not have a 3.11 to test with, except yours:) ---------------------------------------------------- Of course as our old Friend light and Ligthe V does not really support Pictures.... Without an add on like Kinoma and only has 2 megs of ram and Flash ram anyway --------------------------------------------------- Mine is Jammed with over 1500 records and only about 500k free ram. ----------------------------------------------- I have no Picture viewer so that is a another variable too. Also where does the Picture Sync look for Uploads of Photos. I have Lots of Dig Photos on my computer from my Digital Camera. Maybe its trying to suck them up out of Iphoto. Also, I think that because Version 4 and newer natively supported Pictures and my Old V has less ram then was standard on newer models that came with V4 some funky stuff was going on in regard to Desktop 4.1..... -------------------- Sure would like somthing Like a Tungston or Clie that was under 4 ounces like our V and Somthing for like $200. Picky Picyk:) All the new ones have porked up some. Only the Orignal Zire was Bantam at 3.8 ounces. |
Palm 4
The Palm 4 desktop will run under either OS 9 or OS X. I understand that 2.6.3 was YUK, that's why I'm moving up!!
Anyway, what I can't figure out is how to get palm 4 going under OS X. Right now, it just hangs when it comes up. Right now, I can only get palm 4 to run when I boot up OS 9 native. This is even WORSE than palm 2.6.3, for at least with that, OS X would lauch the Classic environment and I could use it that way. Anybody have any ideas on how to get this puppy to go??? |
[ponder] I've installed Palm 4.0/4.1 on ~15 machines now without a single problem. It's easiest if I make the User and admin briefly and install it as them. I suggest ditching 4.0 and trying 4.1.
This is with a Sony Clié, Tungsten T, Palm V, Palm Vx, Handspring POS, ad naseum.. |
Yeah what Yellow said but that is how we started
Yeah what Yellow said but that is how we started before I took us on the Hot Sync Tangent.
Still recommend X Native 4.1 |
Make sure that you fit the "System Requirements" listed on http://www.palm.com/us/software/desktop/mac.html before you proceed.
Try backing up your user directory (always a good idea when dealing with Palm stuff, not the most well written software IMO), throw it in a ~/Documents/Palm/ directory, and removing (& trash) everything else that remotely has anything to do with Palm in 9 & 10. When running the installer, it tries to find all the pieces parts and remove them/replace them. Well, I just noticed that you said you did pdmazz. *stumped* |
palm 4.0/4.1 No Go
Team,
No dice. I've tried many variations of 4.0/4.1 install/de-install/custom install and I can not get the desktop to install on 10.1.5. Also, if installed under native OS 9, the desktop will always hang when I try to bring it up under OS X. There appears to be no way to have the desktop 4.0/4.1 come up under Classic environment. I have to do a native OS 9 boot, which is a non-workable solution. So, it appears I just dead in the water for 4.0/4.1 I will now try to get the old 2.6.3 desktop installed and going. Man-o-man, what-a-pain!!!! If anyone has any divine inspiration for this problem, now's the time to speak up! |
When you say uninstall
Did you search form the Finder for "Palm" and remove all the results.
Did you then search form the Finder for "HotSync" and remove all the results. Warning, Move but do not through out your use data folder.*********** |
My only (non) devine inspiration is maybe moving to Jaguar? I can confirm 100% that Palm 4.1 functions in Jaguar. I cannot do the same for 10.1.5.

Yes it works in Jag up to Current 10.26
Yes it works in Jag up to Current 10.26:
And Jag is way better tehn 10.1x. Besides all the features the Archive and install Option alone is worth the Cost Of admission. You have the Option to: 1) Reformat Drive and Install (Yuck, Old way) *************************** 2) Archive and INstall presving user settings, home, dir, network settings, almost nothing to do except add printers. **************************** 3) Archive and INstall with out preving user setttings. IN Both cases you get Previous System Folder and a New System and Apps Folder. In the Former Apple Does a FAb job of copying Apps from Old Apps Folder to new and Copying all your settings files, Desktop, Dock etc. It works well In the latter, It is Truly Virgin if you want anything settings, or Apps from Old Install you have to Dag things around your self and some Apps will require reinstall. In both Archive Options: ALL your other Folders/Dir are preserved. ************************* I am supposed to Remind you to back up first, Your millage may vary etc:) Always a good Idea. I feel faitly confident in your sucess even with out doing so. And yet it is your Data so, it your rsik, not mine. |
Here's the fix!!!
This issue with this error is that the folder "/Library/Application Support/Palm HotSync" has the wrong privileges set.
Palm does have instructions on how to fix this error in Solution ID: 8354. (Actually, they quote a different error, but it is essentially the same problem). Basically, set the permissions to the above folder so that everything can write to it. Then re-run the installer... everything works like a champ after that... (that only took my 2 hours :-( |
