Hey guys,
I have an iMac G5 running tiger 10.4.7 and I an having a wierd problem. Whenever I go to a site that has an embedded youtube, flash or some kind of video, there is no sound. If it a quicktime file there is no problem. There is not sound no matter what broswer I use, firefox, camino, safari, or shiira. And keep in mind that about a week ago I was not having this issue.

Help Would be awesome
Thanks!

have you installed any new software in the last week? new version of Flash Player?

Does the problem persist from within a new user account?

trevor 07-13-2006 12:52 PM

Open up Audio MIDI Setup, which is an app in your /Applications/Utilities folder.

Verify that the Output sample rate is 44100 Hz, and that all the other settings are correct.

Or you can try the voodoo fix of launching and then quitting Garage Band.

After the update to 10.4.7, I've started seeing that too.

coreaudiod will occasionally be listed as "not responding" in Activity Monitor, but even killing it doesn't fix the problem, it relaunches as expected, but still no sound with Flash.

No updated Flash version, no related log entries, MIDI settings checked.

Flash Player (/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Flash Player.plugin) is 8.0 r24.

voldenuit 07-14-2006 07:29 AM

I am really fed up with this nonsense.

After Flash went silent on me (see previous post), I have downloaded and installed the Flash 9 beta, which did not fix the problem.

Then I've been able to hunt down (and it is damn well hidden) a place where other versions than 9 are available:
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

So I uninstalled version 9, then tried the updater for version 8 only to find out that it wouldn't install anything, because it was an updater, not an installer.

The real installers are far better hidden than that:

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowled...fm?id=tn_14266

Inside those zipfiles, there are both the Mac and the Windows versions.

But sadly, even after re-installing 8.0 r24, still no sound.

Any ideas how to fix this mess ?

edit

Just fixed it myself, it was incredibly simple:

I dumped the complete Macromedia Folder that lives in ~/Library/Preferences

That's all.

voldenuit,

This issue will be fixed in the final release of Flash Player 9 for Intel Macs:

http://www.kaourantin.net/2006/07/un...ound-woes.html

Also note that QuickTime is affected the same way, so you might still have to change the MIDI preferences when you use 3rd party audio apps.

voldenuit 07-22-2006 05:14 PM

Thanks for the link, it's always interesting to get background information.

I have a PPC Mac (sorry I didn't mention that in my previous posts), so my problem was definitely distinct from the fact that Adobe pushes Flash 9 out of the door before it's ready for prime-time.

Note that the OP had a PPC machine as well.

The link on adobe.com points directly to version 9.0.16 and you have to really look around to find any older version.

None of the fixes mentioned in this thread worked for me.
Additionally, in the course of trying to fix it myself, I came across the weirdest bug I have ever experienced.
The Youtube video I was randomly using to try to get the audio to work was called "LAND WALKER -Japanese Robot suit-" and can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVwbU...elated&search=

On a previous attempt to fix the audio, a rep at Apple Tech Support had suggested Control-clicking the video and adjusting the settings. These settings pertained to video input, not output, but today, just for the hell of it, I tried it again. This time, every time I Control-Click on the video and select "Settings' from the pulldown menu, I am instantly taken to a Google map of North Korea!!!!
I kid you not. Here's the exact URL I'm taken to: http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=e...04106,0.080509

Any Explanations?

voldenuit 08-03-2006 01:11 PM

Very weird, just like the bot...
Here, the control-click works as expected.

For starters, I'd dump at least the Safari, if not all Caches (in your home and system-wide) and see if that helps.

2sheds 08-03-2006 08:57 PM

Sorry. Didn't mention I was using Firefox.
Also, the audio from YouTube DOES come through a USB Plantronics headset I have plugged in, but nowhere else. This is regardless of how I set the Sound Control Panel.

Zali 08-05-2006 08:04 AM

I've had the same problem lately, and I'm pretty sure it began after I updated Flash v9 a few weeks ago: YouTube videos that were embedded in external sites lacked audio, although audio on YouTube.com videos played fine.

As voldenuit suggested above, dumping the Macromedia preference folder that's in ~/Library/Preferences did the trick for me. I'm running the latest version of Firefox on a Dual 2.0 G5 under Mac OS X 10.3.9, so obviously my particular YouTube audio problem was not related (or at least not restricted) to the 10.4.7 update. It occured in the Camino, Safari, and Opera browsers, as well, btw.

Thanks, voldenuit!

Trevor - "Open up Audio MIDI Setup, which is an app in your /Applications/Utilities folder. Verify that the Output sample rate is 44100 Hz, and that all the other settings are correct."

This is my first time to this forum and I must say 'Wow". I had no sound from YouTube or MySpace videos, even though they worked a few days ago (iMac Intel and all new gear). Followed Tevor's advice and it worked like a charm. Man, how was it possible to figure out that the problem was in the MIDI devices setup???? Thanks loads. Derek

Hi guys , i tryed all the things that you said... but i can not listen anything...

other ideas?

aortiz32 11-04-2006 02:52 AM

Worked for me :-)

Hey all,

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried deleting the contents of ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia, an had no sound on flash videos from Google Video or YouTube. But after changing the Audio Output in the "Audio Midi Setup" to 44100.00 Hz, all audio in flash videos started working.

Pambie 11-07-2006 08:43 PM

Still can't get my YouTube audio working

I tried all the suggestions but this one:

< dumped the complete Macromedia Folder that lives in ~/Library/Preferences>

Can you tell me exactly where that is located? I am a first time imac owner.
THANKS Oh, btw, the audio worked fine on YouTube for awhile & then it suddenly stopped.

~ = your home folder
~/Library is one of the folders in your home folder
~/Library/Preferences is a sub-folder of the Library folder

No Sound in Browsers? Try adjusting your Audio MIDI settings...

I recently came across the problem of no sound in any of my browsers (but my system sounds did work, also iTunes). Firefox, Safari and Camino were all affected - YouTube, websites, etc..

Trashing my Macromedia preferences - in home and user - did not work for me.

What DID WORK was adjusting my settings in the Audio MIDI setting in my Utilities folder. Make sure the output format is 44100.0 Hz - this worked for me.

The only explanation I may have for the cause of this problem was that I recently paired a bluetooth earpiece to my computer to use with Skype. (somehow messing with the output levels?) Thanks to a previous poster for this fix!!! :D

trevor you are a GOD

i was desperate and thought i had tried everything. the garage band voodoo fix worked. thank goodness. i was tearing my hair out over the problem.
i use an imac g5 power pc (not intel) with mac os-x.

jayarm 12-03-2006 02:44 AM

I did the garageband reboot and now the sound in youtube/ebaum/myspace plays, but no video???

vanguardd 01-18-2007 05:10 PM

no sound on flash videos

I tried all kinds of things like deleting prefs and deleting cache files. The trick that worked for me was the Audio MIDI Setup settings.

This is what they should look like.

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/4...omidiseka5.jpg

My output settings were at 96000 instead of the 44100 the second I did I heard AUDIO!

Hope this helps someone:D

:) Amazing, this worked for me with Mac OS X 3.9

After Firefox 2.0 crashed - it or none of my other browsers would play audio from embeded media sites. Set output to 44100 Hz and all is well...

I am also using Detour and Audio Hijack Pro - AHP would show that signal was being processed, but no audio would play through speakers before the fix...

Thanks!

GarageBand voodo fix didn't work for me. Audio MIDI was set correctly, so that was no help.

Trashing my Macromedia preferences finally did the trick. YouTube audio has been restored. Thanks, all!

Helveticus99 12-02-2007 06:19 AM

did not work for me, until I moved the volume slider in the output channel 1 by a notch

Dude, that's a brilliant fix! I tried just about everything else I could find and then I read your post and did it and now BAM! I can hear YouTube again. Which is REALLY important when you're watching videos like this: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=lk5_OSsawz4

Thanks so much for sharing that!

The Fix

I too have a G5 and experienced the same "No Sound" problem coming from any Flash Video on a web site... I did all of the suggested fixes with no luck... However, "The Voodoo fix of launching and then quitting Garage Band" WORKED. I'm not asking any more questions... it just worked...
