Browsers won't allow me to download files from sourceforge.net.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...al/screen2.jpg

The picture illustrates the link that I receive whenever I try to download the program Max from macupdate.com (which links the sourceforge.net website where the file is located). Rather than beginning the download, it gives me a tab with the file name followed by the text "(GIF Image 1x1 pixels)". Does this happen to anyone else? Any idea of how to get past this? Thanks

solipsism 06-28-2006 10:55 PM

Nope, works fine for me. Try the link below...

I'm guessing you are running NetBarrier - if so - disable ad-blocking

Yeah - that would be my guess too.
(Note that "prdownloads" contains the word "ads"!)

Thanks a lot Tom. I'll give that a try.

hi Hayne - You liked my answer on this thread - cool - but I'm always looking for the reason why.
after visiting your site I thought you would be the right person to ask.
the "Safari -1x1 pixel problem" can be reproduced when a certain version of a "SIMBL.bundle" file is installed - often located here:
/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/
two applications (in the past) that have caused this problem for some people are:
WebDevAdditions
AcidSearch

my question is - do you know if NetBarrier installs a "SIMBL.bundle" file?

thank you,

Tom X

I have no idea - but I doubt it.
The person to ask would be someone who has NetBarrier installed - e.g. Remedial

Tom X 06-29-2006 06:48 PM

hi Remedial - do you know if NetBarrier installed a "SIMBL.bundle" file?
located here:
/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/
or maybe here:
/Users/YourName/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/

thank you,

Tom X

Remedial 08-08-2006 08:51 PM

Nope.

I wasn't able to locate either of those files or folders, so it doesn't look NetBarrier installed that bundle. And, oh yeah, the suggestion you recommended definitely worked. Thanks.

ThreeDee 08-08-2006 09:07 PM

If you want ad-blocking, you could try:

PithHelmet - http://culater.net/software/PithHelmet/PithHelmet.php
AdBlock Plus - http://adblockplus.org/en/ and Filterset.G - http://www.pierceive.com/
CamiTools - Woah! Check out the homepage! http://www.nadamac.de/index.php CamiTools is dead!

Now I can't open gmail and another site.

Specifically:

electro-music.com/forums.

I don't understand why particular sites are targeted while others aren't. I just get a blank page.

I'm not able to access electro-music on either my IBook or Powerbook, but I can get to gmail just fine on the IBook. Currently I use both Ad-Block and No Script, but I don't see either of these being the cause.

Any ideas of what this could be? Thanks.

There's an easy way to test--what happens when you turn off both Ad-Block and No Script?

I tried that even before I posted. Funny thing is, it also happens in Camino. I was thinking it was only Mozilla products, but when I tried Safari, I got this:

Safari can’t open the page “http://electro-music.com/forum/”. The error was: “bad server response” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.

trevor 08-09-2006 11:21 PM

So, when you say that you tried that before posting, do you mean that turning off Ad-Block and No Script made no difference in behavior?

Can you open up your Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities) and copy/paste the following commands? Then, copy/paste the results here:

traceroute electro-music.com
traceroute yahoo.com

(assuming that you can reach yahoo.com normally in your browser. If not, substitute another well-known domain.)

When you copy/paste the results here, feel free to obfuscate the IP addresses in the first two lines of each traceroute, in order to protect your privacy.

Yeah, turning off AdBlock and No Script had no effect. So, you want me to trace the path of electro-music/forums (which is the site I "can't" access) and the path of another site which I have no trouble accessing, correct?

trevor 08-10-2006 02:28 PM

Exactly.

Here's the traceroute for electro-music.com. Question: Why couldn't I put the "/forum" at the end. I tried it and saw that it didn't work. What's the reason for this?

You are tracing a route to the server, not a page. :)

You can stop it from working on your PC by installing Windows 98.

Okay, let me rephrase my question. Why is Mac OS X unable to contact a server while PC's have this option?

It isn't at all clear that you have established that the above is true.
All you know is that it doesn't work on your one OS X machine but it does work on your one PC.
It is likely due to a configuration difference between them.

Note that other people running OS X (e.g. me) have no problem in contacting that server. Here's the output of 'traceroute electro-music.com' on my 10.4.7 machine:

It might be interesting to see the results from 'tracert electro-music.com' in a DOS window on your PC, as well as a repeat of the traceroute results from your Mac at the same time.

Thing is, it's not only one Mac. Neither my Powerbook or IBook can access that website. The only thing I can think is that my ISP is blocking it.

But I thought you had said that you can access it from your Windows machine. Isn't that machine connected to the same ISP as your Mac machines?

While debugging, I'd definitely get rid of Netbarrier, whether or not you believe it is related. You can always re-install it once the problem is solved.

Make sure you uninstall it properly, in particular that there are no kernel extensions left behind.

I emphatically agree.
If you are resistant to this, note that the next step in troubleshooting might be to do a full reinstall of OS X in order to be sure to remove all such 3rd-party stuff.

Yup. Sure is.

a few simple things to try

uninstall thirdy party enhancements

create a new user account and test

try multiple browsers (sounds like you already did that)

reinstall firefox, mozilla, opera, or whatever third party browser you are working with

make sure no firewall, browser filtering, or anything similiar is enabled, etc

any of this help?
