Osx 10.39 Entourage 2004

Well, i can't seem to get this app working. Everytime i launch ent. 2004 it crashes. It shows the splash screen and sure enough quits with an error right after that. "Microsoft has a encountered a problem" blah blah blah. The error reporting shows

I have tried everything i can think of. Trashed entourage preferences, the com.microsoft.entourage.prefs.plist, got rid of the entourage folders in the microsoft user data folders, rebuilt the database and says its working, tried moving the com.apple.internetconfig.plist to the desktop and tried firing it up, uninstalled Entourage from cd, reinstalled. Nothing works. What else is there?

Does the problem continue from a newly-created user?

Have you tried reinstalling the OS X 10.3.9 combo update?

Have you checked your filesystem, either by using a third party utility such as Diskwarrior, while booted to the DiskWarrior CD, or Disk Utility, while booted to your OS X Install CD/DVD?

Have you tried repairing permissions from Disk Utility while booted normally to your hard drive?

Ive tried repairing permissions with disk utility and tried a new user with no success.

rboklewski 06-28-2006 05:49 PM

im gonna verify that the keychain access is okay too, but i doubt that is it. I also you font doctor also to see if there were corrupt fonts. There was only a duplicate of verdana which i moved with the program, no help.

Does "no success" mean that the behavior does not change?

Again, have you tried reinstalling the OS X 10.3.9 combo update?

Have you checked your filesystem, either by using a third party utility such as Diskwarrior, while booted to the DiskWarrior CD, or Disk Utility, while booted to your OS X Install CD/DVD?

If you look above i already stated i used disk utility and font doctor. No success means the application still won't startup. All the updates are installed.

"Repairing Disk Permissions" is a completely different thing that "Repairing Disk". Please boot to your OS X Install CD/DVD, go to the First Aid tab, select your boot drive on the left, and click the "Repair Disk" button.

And for the third time, have you tried reinstalling the 10.3.9 Combo Update?

Ill tell you what, i tried running the memtest from versiontracker.com and i just found out i can't even open up a terminal window. It only shows the red x in the corner of the window and that is it. Weird!

rboklewski 06-29-2006 04:44 PM

Any idea why that would happen?

rboklewski 06-29-2006 04:46 PM

Also, if i do a archive and install of the operating system again, will i have to move anything or will everything look the same as i does now. Meaning will i have everything on the desktop and will all my applications be there and working correctly. We use suitcase over here and i know i created a new user to test the entourage and none of the fonts showed up in suitcase under that new user. Will these have to be put back in after the archive and install of osx?

trevor 06-29-2006 05:02 PM

Please note that the thing I advised you to do--reinstall the 10.3.9 combo update, is NOT an Archive and Install. It is less intrusive, in that it leaves everything as it is, but may replace files that were somehow corrupted or different that were installed during the 10.3.9 install process. This will definitely leave everything where it is on your desktop, and the only change that might occur is if some things are not working now, they might start working.

If you do decide to do an Archive and Install, here is an information page at Apple's website about it: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120

Applications SHOULD all continue to work normally. /System and /Library are both replaced with new versions, but /Library/Application Support is left alone, meaning that apps should continue to work properly. If apps install things outside of the area where they are supposed to install things, it is possible that they will stop working. If that happens, you still have a copy of the files that are necessary--Archive and Install places everything into a folder named /Previous Systems. There's a great deal more detail in the page I linked to above.

Thanks Trevor i will try the update and keep this thread updated.

Macromedia apps are notorious for installing things in places they shouldn't, meaning that they often stop working after an Archive and Install. But most apps are just fine.

Trevor

rboklewski 06-29-2006 05:30 PM

and it will be fine to run this combo 10.39 update when 10.39 update was already installed?

trevor 06-29-2006 05:32 PM

yes.

Trevor

rboklewski 06-29-2006 05:53 PM

Update didn't work

rboklewski 07-05-2006 03:56 PM

are there any fonts in the system folder that office may use that might be missing? Or a font in one of the many folders?

trevor 07-05-2006 04:09 PM

It is usually recommended that you shouldn't touch the items in the /System folder, including the fonts. If you use a font manager, I'd recommend not turning off any of those fonts that can be found in /System/Library/Fonts at all.

I'm not sure if the fonts in /System are required by Office or not, but I'd definitely leave them alone.

If none of these things helps, then the fastest way to a properly-running computer IS an Archive and Install, making sure that the box is checked to preserve user settings.

rboklewski 07-05-2006 05:15 PM

yeah, i wanted to do that as a last resort as there are many programs that are used and files everywhere. If and when i do this archive and install what exactly am i gonna see when i enter into osx. Will his files be on the desktop where he has them now? I heard the application settings for programs will be lost also. Im just a little nervous since this computer is the art directors. I may try to call apple for a 30 dollar charge just to see what they say, so i know if this is truly necessary.

trevor 07-05-2006 05:57 PM

I linked to Apple's explanatory page for an Archive and Install back in post #12. You might want to read that for a full explanation. Briefly, everything in /System is replaced. Apps should continue to work fine. Your user and settings should all be fine. If something necessary was in the old /System, it is archived in a folder called Previous Systems, so you can retrieve it after an Archive and Install.

Good luck!

Note though that if the issue with Entourage is due to some setting or preference thats wrong that too will be transfered when you do an archive and install. At least you could at that point pretty much flush the user account and recuperate all piece by piece from the archive that gets created at the same time.

rboklewski 07-06-2006 10:27 AM

Thanks guys ill look into this and keep this updated.
