Those clever Mac ads
Anyone else think the PC guy in the Mac ads looks like MS's Bill Gates...
http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2006/..._300x385,0.jpg http://images.apple.com/getamac/imag...op20060501.jpg ...and that Steve Jobs has an unrealistic image of himself: http://www.wired.com/news/images/full/7630571_f.jpg :D |
Clever? You use that word . . . I do not think it means what you think it means.
|
clever: quick to understand, learn, and devise or apply ideas; intelligent.
Whats the problem given the context with which it was used? (definition provided by the Oxford English Dictionary) |
Clever also means, "superficially ingenious or witty". Some will argue that the archetypes of Gates and Jobs is cliché, hence, the opposite of witty. But I aver that the use of these icons to abstractly represent the computer itself is, in itself, ingenious and, therefore, clever.
|
Because it's nothing new. That's why it isn't clever. The "Jobs is cool, Gates is a dork" joke is old enough not to be a joke at all anymore. The statement "businessman vs cool hip dude" is as obsolete as the joke itself. Apple's ad firm should be slapped for proposing it. Not being a hip 20-year-old is now somehow related to your computer? Vice-versa? Give me a break. Elitist crap.
Ever wonder why Mac users get made fun of by Windows and Linux people? Here's your reason, funded by Apple themselves. So yeah, not clever. |
I agree. I think the good points the commercials do get across could have gotten across just as well without the need for the smug, elitist air that is almost always associated with Macs and their users.

I think they're perfect. I own a Dell laptop that I bought last Feb. I also have a PBG4 1.5. I don't use the Dell at all other than to update its software because of how horribly slow and counterintuitive it is. I think the ads show PCs for what they are: Big plastic boxes for people that don't know any better. PCs are good for gaming. Thats it. I have yet to work with any software on a PC that hasn't had me shaking my head and wanting to throw it out a window.
From Database software, to mathematical software, I have no respect for any software ran on a PC because its clumbsy and repugnant. After using my Dell for a few months, It became painfully clear that there is absolutely no comparison between mac software and PC software. I ran adobe photoshop on both systems: just take a guess which one crashed several times while rendering some photos... I think these ads accurately simplify the differences between a Mac and a PC. I agree the hip/not-hip thing is overdone, but the basic premise is right on: Macs are simple to use and PCs are not. |
[RANT]Where are fan-created ad wars? I expected these easily produced ads would bring out all the Windows and Mac "fanboys", and their digicams. I've been waiting for a PC to say how great it is as gaming and the vast options of software (the latter being an outdated fact) and the Mac saying something stupid about about iTunes or it's one mouse button or how every Mac comes with a black turtleneck. Seriously, I want spoof commercials and I want them now![/RANT]

And the PC people are still reading the Movie Maker manuals. :) |
Touché, Hayne.

Funny funny funny.
Just wait, someone will come out with a parody before too long. I saw a few paradoies of the 'switcher' commercials. I wish I had some links. The one I really liked involved a man who just hated the interface, but had made the movie on a mac anyway. The whole video involved him beating the utter crap out of an old iMac (CRT version), which is fine with me, I never quite liked that style ;). |
Hayne: Nice!
solipsism: that is a great parody! I too would love to see some fanboy-based warfare. However, I have a feeling that it will all be based on the far-to-obvious comparisons between hip and non-hip computer users. Still, I want to see some mud-slinging!! |

Thanks, Reache. It was exactly the angle I expected to see from a PC gaymer.

Gus is hilarious. Those guys over at Rooster Teeth (Red vs. Blue) crack me up on a weekly basis!

If you haven't seen it yet, the Daily Show clip with John Hodgeman is probably the funniest one.

I used to be a freelance designer in the states. It was my job to work on-site with various clients to create whatever print jobs they needed. I worked with dozens of different associations/companies/agencies/etc., some places used PC, so I had to use PC and vice versa. |
I have to ask...is there a reason why you center all your posts?
I always think my ad blockers are botching the page when i see your posts ;) |

By the way, anyone check out that old Sony Vaio commercial? :D – ArcticStones |
At least three new ads are now available at http://www.apple.com/getamac/
|
Thanks for the heads up.
Trust Mac had me chuckling. Kind of wish Mac kept the facial hair. |
Pro "Christ Follower" commercials using the "I'm a Mac" format. They are very well done.

The best parody was on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, that had the actual actor as a "Special Correspondent" who, at some point, is forced to actually utter "I'm a PC". Hillarious.
PS. I hate that the "mac" guy looks like Keanu Reeves. I hate Keanu Reeves. |
Sorry, I see that solipsism up there beat me to this comment. I didn't realize there were two pages to this thread. :o
I still hate Keanu Reeves though. |
It looks like even Microsoft is using the "I'm a Mac" ad format. How many fallacies can you fine in this pro-Zune/anti-iPod propaganda ad.
