Bill gates retiring in 2 years

http://www.redmondmag.com/news/artic...torialsID=7536

According to this and dozens of other sources from Google News, Bill Gates is going to retire in 2 years, 2008.

He sees the that the ship's sinking

DarkSaint 06-16-2006 12:04 AM

The end of their 2009 fiscal year is June 30th, 2008?

I find this preposterous. More or less we all share a dislike of Windows, but the Gates Foundation deserves a lot of respect and he is doing an enormous amount of incredible work on that front.

MBHockey 06-16-2006 12:52 PM

I can't help but think that is at least part of the reason he is deciding to leave. He just doesn't want to deal with it.

I never said anything negative about him peronsally, since I do think all the work he does through the foundation is absolutely great. No need for links, I have read more about the work he has done through the foundation than most people.

According to the article from Microsoft, he his leaving his "day to day" activites. He is still going to be a part of the company.

What I want to know is when that nut job Ballmer is leaving.

Good for him...:D

When I read his reasons I was overjoyed. It's wonderful to hear that the worlds richest man has an eye for charity. I say good luck to him.

If there is anything preposterous about the man, it's his way of using robber-baron methods to install the nearly-monopoly we have to put up with today.
PR is working it seems.

There's little reason to work for profit when you have more money than you could possibly spend. It's admirable that he already gives back so much and will devote the bulk of his time and abilities to his charitable foundation in two years.

pantherman13 06-17-2006 02:11 PM

I love that video. It's in my iTunes Library.

1) Ballmer needs to lay off the quadruple-shot expressos.

2) Gates will still be a contributor to MSFT. Theres not doubt about it. He just won't have to be there every day. He'll still be the CEO or whatever the heck he feels like calling himself.

3) Its good to see someone as wealthy as him, trying to use it for something good.

Caius 06-18-2006 12:01 PM

I showed my friend the video, and this is the email I got in reply. Just about sums up ballmer for me really.

From wikipedia:

Mark Lucovsky has claimed that Ballmer became violently enraged on hearing that Lucovsky was about to leave Microsoft for Google, Ballmer threw a violent and destructive rage, throwing a chair across the room and saying, according to Lucovsky: "*****ing Eric Schmidt is a *****ing p*ssy. I'm going to fu*cking bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again … I'm going to fu*cking kill Google." Shortly after, he resumed trying to persuade Lucovsky to stay at Microsoft. Ballmer has described Lucovsky's account of the incident as a "gross exaggeration of what actually took place." [1], [2]

In an interview with Fortune magazine (March 29, 2006) [3], Ballmer described how business and family life intersected. When asked if he used an iPod, he said, "No, I do not. Nor do my children.... I've got my kids brainwashed: You don't use Google, and you don't use an iPod."

Beginning to make sense?

Compare this to Steve Jobs from apple: walking calmly around on stage toting a slick new iPod.

You should also see his developers movie:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=d_AP3SGMxxM

IIRC this was at a MSFT developers conference, and this was at the end of his presentation (or part way through at least) as he's had time to get passionate and worked up ;)

The above is the 3 minute music video someone created and is now very widely spread on the internet. The original 19 second clip seems to be this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=drLO_LG0W9w

And is it me, or does he seem like a sweatier version of the michelin man?

Gates foundation charitably involved in helping a buy-out of the San José Mercury News (among others):

http://www.editorandpublisher.com/ea..._id=1003020008

Probably a very worthy charitable cause to help media groups buy newspapers, why am I so not surprised ?

MBHockey 08-22-2006 04:30 PM

That is unsettling.

ummm...have you heard any stories about what it's like to work for Steve? He's not exactly known for his tact or soft-spot. Rumor has it he used to fire people is he wasn't in a good mood...and not peole who failed at a given task..but just random people in the halls. It's a popular rumor. I'm sure the iCon book has better stories.

Yeah i know. It's weird how he was all worked up and pacing around the stage. At least this puppet doesn't do that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDYSrpcYvP8

And if this puppet, Fash, is going to get steamed up on something, he might as well try to play the drums and think he's all that, and do destruction on his set. But why does his name have to be Fash? Couldn't anyone think of a better drummer name or soemthing?

ThreeDee 05-04-2008 09:36 PM

I know, I know, I revived a dead topic.

But it's been 2 years and Bill Gates hasn't retired yet...
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,126127-page,1/article

I think it's a bad time for Gates to retire.

It may, however, be an excellent time for Steven Ballmer to retire.
Not to mention the Vista Development Team (and their flawed baby).

I’d never underestimate Bill Gates.
Apple still has a thing or two to learn about business strategy from Mr Gates, although it doesn’t have to emulate every trick in his book.
