Did software update, now Mac is very slow

I did a software update from Apple yesterday and my computer slowed down to a crawl - it took exactly 17 minutes to boot up. I could not use any applications or the time did not even advanced - the mouse cursor would move but everything was frozen. I could hear the computer making very small bit grinding advances - not like the normal boot up where it makes a lot of noise and quickly boots up. I have a G4 - 1.25 dual with 1.5 mb of memory. I have 35gb free space on that main drive and an internal Art drive with about 122gb free of a 180gb drive. I just did a security update from mac and it slowed down - really slow. Yesterday, occasionally during work, it would do the same thing. Slow down or freeze for 5 minutes at a time and make that slow bit grinding sound like it was loading a million fonts for program before it starts. It would do it randomly too. Did anyone else have a slowdown in their Mac after the software update? 10.4.6 is the version of OS X I'm running.

hayne 05-16-2006 11:46 AM

The noises you mention make me think that you might have a hardware problem with one of your disk drives. (Seems coincidental, but a software update exercises the drive a bit more than usual and might have been the last straw.)
Check what it says at the bottom of Disk Utility as to the SMART status of the drive(s).

Maybe try the standard troubleshooting suggestions:
http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ (see the "My Mac needs help" section)
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...04011205473937
http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?t=7269
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html

In particular, be sure to do "Repair Disk" (different from "Repair Disk Permissions"!) in Disk Utility when booted from the Install CD/DVD. I.e. you restart from the Install CD/DVD, then run the version of Disk Utility that is available from one of the menus there.
See this Apple doc:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

And I note that most people who have experienced problems with the recent updates have found that it is related to a 3rd-party startup item (in the /Library/StartupItems folder). The most common problem is with the Adobe "Cue Version" startup item.

Marsh 05-16-2006 11:58 AM

The S.M.A.R.T. status is verified of both drives.

Marsh 05-16-2006 12:01 PM

What is Adobe Cue Version? I have the CS2 suite and have quite a few fonts.ie

Reflect_TRUTH 05-16-2006 12:33 PM

I did the update on 5 machines and have experienced no problems.

Marsh 05-27-2006 02:05 PM

I've tried the above with no avail - machine still boots slow and while working on, it occasionally goes in lock postion for about three minutes - no spinning beachball of death - no menubar clock blinking separators dots - nothing but the mouse still moves around but the dock and other items do not respond. This goes for about three minutes, then it lets go and everything is back to normal. No program crashes. During this freeze I can hear the computer crunching bits. ?? One thing I have noticed is that none of my start items preferences are sticking - all of my account start items switch on and when I add them to start up on but their preferences do not change. The volume always come on loud even when I lower it and I shut down or reboot? The window for the scanner software launches almost off the bottom of my screen even if I move it to the center and correctly close the program and restart it, shut down or reboot the computer. Every preference of any program that I change, still restarts as if I had not changed it. Mac Mail still comes up as not hidden even if is check hide on my start up items. If I take it out of the start up items, it does not open but when I recheck it to start up, it opens again in the exact same preference/position of the screen as before. All my programs start every time in the exact same configuration regardless if I change them or re-add them to the start up menu. Any have this proiblem? Many thanks for your help in advance.

trevor 05-27-2006 06:16 PM

Marsh, have you gone through the Troubleshooting steps that Hayne mentioned? If not, please do, and report back to us exactly what you tried and exactly what the result of that step was.

You can't hear crunching bits--the CPU is silent. You are probably hearing the hard drive thrashing. Is your hard drive full?

Marsh 05-28-2006 02:02 PM

I have tried a zap pram and never heard the three chimess? I have a logitech wireless dou keyboard and am not sure what keys to use. I've tried them all in combo and still cannot zap the pram.. Will keep trying. As far as the bit crunching goes, it is making sounds while it is stallled. I have plenty of hard rive left 32 of 80 GB.

It is quite likely that a wireless keyboard will not work for this.
In general it is a good idea to have a USB keyboard for use in troubleshooting (one from some other computer, even a PC, should work).
But the best is to have an Apple-branded USB keyboard - that is the only thing that is guaranteed to work for all the troubleshooting steps.

And you still don't seem to have gotten serious about running through all of the troubleshooting steps I referred to above.
In particular, try creating a new user (in Accounts preferences) and logging in as that user.

And have you checked in the /Library/StartupItems folder to see if you have the Adobe Cue Version startup item?

Marsh 05-28-2006 02:34 PM

Thanks for the info. I will get my keyboard down from the box in garage rafters. Then zap the pram. I am serious. I just have a ton to do of late. Lots of art for clients. I do believe I did delete the Adobe Version cue when I tried to reinstall indesign for a customer who sent me file I could not open. I will reinstall it and add it to start up items. BTW, I'm using camino for a web browser and it does not handle the form comment box so well, hence the typos.

Marsh 05-28-2006 11:24 PM

Well here's the skinny. I did all the software items. Zapped the PRAM, to disabled my start items and none did the, except logging in as a new user. I had another admin user already anad all my problems were gone. I also notice another user I did not create? It does not show up in my system preferences as an account? It is titled "clamav" Does any one know who this user is. How do I delete it? If the problem is my preference for he system... how do I delete my mail preferences and what will I loose? Also how do I delete my sound volume start preferences? Still starting up every time regardless of what I do as highest volume except when I log in as another user?? Please help. All items at start up are off and cannot change the high volume on restart and computer still boot very slow and stalls for long periods of time. Thanks.

If I understand you correctly (it would be a good idea to use a few more words to explain yourself more clearly) then it seems that your problems are only with the one user account. In that case I present to you my generic procedure for solving user-specific problems:
------------------------
You have determined that the problem is only with the one user account.
The problem thus is almost certainly due to something under your home folder.
And it likely is something under ~/Library
( ~ = your home folder)
The most likely thing is a bad preference file under ~/Library/Preferences
You could start by removing the preference files for the apps you are having trouble with.
If the problem persists, you need to narrow the problem down - you could start by moving (via drag & drop) the whole "Preferences" folder that is under ~/Library to the Desktop, then log out and log in again. A default copy of the Preferences folder will have been recreated. Does that improve things? If so, you could use a divide & conquer approach to figure out which of the preference files is causing the problem - move half of the preference files back into the Preferences folder, log out & in again, etc.

If the problem persists, try the same thing with the other sub-folders of ~/Library. E.g. with ~/Library/Caches, ~/Library/InputManagers, ~/Library/Fonts, ~/Library/PreferencePanes, ~/Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Application Enhancers, contents of ~/Desktop, etc.
Also remove any files owned by your user in /Library/Caches (the Library folder at the top-level of the drive)
------------------------

That user account would be the one created for running the ClamAv anti-virus scanner. Don't delete it. It is unusual that it is showing up on the login window if that is what you mean.

And by the way, your posts would be easier to read if you broke up the paragraphs using carriage returns. In case you are short of them, here are some that you can use:

I think I made a huge mistake. I was doing the last instructions and took my library/caches (the folder at the top level of my drive) put it on my desktop and rebooted. I thought since all the other instructions were such, I realized I made a huge mistake.

Now I'm on my laptop. I cannot boot my PowerMac I was working on. I just get my screen desktop image and a piece of my menu bar - the spotlight peice? No icons or dock and it seems to be frozen.

How do I get back to my desktop to put my cache where it belongs back in the library.

Sorry.

You say you can't "boot" your PowerMac but then you describe how it shows part of your desktop.
We need to distinguish between booting and logging in.
Maybe you have your Mac set up to do auto-login (so it automatically logs you in without asking you for a password) when you boot it.

Let's bypass the auto-login by booting in "Safe Mode" (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392) by holding down the Shift key immediately after you hear the power-up chime.

See what happens when you try to log in as your usual user when booted in Safe Mode.
Let us know what happens.

Marsh 05-29-2006 03:44 PM

First let me state, thank you Hayne for all your help. Safe mode on the restart still yielded the same problem results. Sorry to say none of the fixes have worked... but they have given me some possible area to investigate. I've done them all for software except Reset CPU (it's not a laptop). I did diagnose one thing from all this. If you restart the computer, the problems remain. If you log in and out of any user they go away.

For example. I restart my computer. Lower the volume from it's started maximum. Close mail even though it is set to "hide" in the start-up items. Then I log out of the user and log back in the the setting stay. Volume starts or logs in at lower volume, mail starts hidden and no processor stalling. When try this with another user, the same results. Every thing is fine when I log out and log in. When I restart or reboot, the computer take very long to boot, start with system volume at maximum level, mail opens on screen in junk even though it it set to hide and lastly I get these long freezes with the spinning beachball in which I hear bit crunching which freeze all: the clock seconds dots stop blinking, the dock does not hide/magnify, I can move me mouse... but nothing else does anything until about 2-3 minutes. Then everything that I attempted during the freeze happens really fast. Then, nothing crashes, and I'm able to work again until the next freeze. They happen maybe once every two hours or so.

I suspect from all this that the system start up items has a corrupt file. Does anyone know what file determines your volume output at boot or restart? What about mail hide or not hide? May be solving these aberrations in start-up the stalling will go away too?

Many thanks,

Marsh

These are minor issue and hence to be ignored while trying to fix the larger issue below.
I note that Apple has said that the checkbox to hide Mail at login (when it is in the list of login items) doesn't work. So ignore that problem completely.

So is it true that these problems happen only for one user account, or do they happen for all user accounts? (Restart the machine and log in as user A - do you see the problem? Restart the machine and login as user B - do you see the problem?) Maybe you don't know the answer to this since it takes several hours for the problem to occur.

How much RAM do you have on this Mac?
How many applications are you running at the same time? Which ones? It's possible that what you encounter is caused by disk swapping due to lack of available RAM.

It isn't clear what you have done (of the troubleshooting steps) and what happened when you did this.
In particular, what happened when you tried to repair the filesystem? You do this with "Repair Disk" (different from "Repair Disk Permissions"!) in Disk Utility when booted from the Install CD/DVD. I.e. you restart from the Install CD/DVD, then run the version of Disk Utility that is available from one of the menus there.
See this Apple doc:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
If it finds anything to repair, you need to do it again immediately and keep repeating until it says the disk appears to be okay.

And next time you get one of the system freezes that you have described above, you should look in the logs to see what error messages are issued.
Launch the "Console" application (under /Applications/Utilities) and look for relevant error messages. Note that messages are labeled with the date & time so you can use that to locate the part of the log to look at. Copy & paste the relevant messages back here so we can see them.
Be sure to look at system.log as well as console.log (Use the "Logs" button (top-left) to see the various logs available - note that you will probably need to be an "admin" user to see the system.log)

Marsh 05-29-2006 05:21 PM

Hayne,

Here are some answers. Will test the stalling problem with other users but may take awhile. Will update as I know. I will open console once it happens too and provide info. I'm looking for version of Disk Warrior for the Disk Repair. Will do that too.

I have 1.5 gb of memory - It happens regardless of if I have one or 20 programs open.

You can do the filesystem repair using "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility as explained in my previous post. You don't need to use Disk Warrior. It is true that Disk Warrior can fix some problems that can't be fixed by Disk Utility, but you don't yet know if your filesystem problems are that severe. Try using Disk Utility first. (Read the above Apple document about how to do it.)

If you did a file system repair using 'fsck -yf' from single-user mode, then there is no point using Disk Utility's "Repair Disk" since that just uses 'fsck' behind the scenes.
But did 'fsck' find anything that needed fixing?
If it did fix something, you need to repeat immediately.
If it said the disk appears to be okay, then there are no problems with the filesystem.

Marsh 05-30-2006 02:34 AM

I did the File System Check again just to be sure and the results were:
" the volume Marshall's-Mac appears to be OK"

I also put the console in my start up items and when I restarted my system, I got the really long boot up - here's the result from console. Please note the long duration between the last two times - the computer was bit crunching for over six minutes.

It would be a good idea to disable all 3rd-party menu bar items like WeatherPop while you are troubleshooting. These types of menu bar items can cause trouble sometimes.

This message would seem to indicate a problem with Spotlight. Googling for that message shows that several others have seen it and identified problems with Spotlight - e.g. this entry on Apple's discussion forums:

Have you removed your system hacks like WeatherPop and MailCountX yet, as Hayne advised? In my opinion, one of your system hacks is by far the most likely cause of the problem. If you remove them and discover that this was indeed the issue, you can check for updates that work with 10.4.6.

Sometimes "I/O errors" like this mean that there is a hardware problem with the disk.
You should make sure that you have a good backup of whatever files you care about.

Marsh 05-31-2006 12:19 AM

Hello Hayne,

I have two extra drives - One internal and one external. The internal is a 180 GB Segate and the external is a 80 gb seagate. the internal has 120 gb of free space and is in the mac with the I/O errors. What is the best way to get the data/apss and or entire system to any of the other drives.

Well, I think you first need to determine if any of these drives is the one having trouble (assuming that your problems are related to drive trouble). There is no point backing up to a drive that is unreliable.
If we can assume that the external drive is reliable, then you have lots of options for doing a backup. If you just want to backup your user data files, then you could just drag your home folder (or other folders) over to the external drive (in Finder) and it would make a copy on the external drive. If you wanted to backup the whole system, you could use something like "Carbon Copy Cloner" or "Super Duper" (google to find them) to clone one of your internal drives to the external.

Quote:

Disk Warrior is good for repairing filesystem corruption. It might not be a bad idea to run it against both of your internal drives. But maybe it is best to make a backup onto your external drive first in case one of the internal drives is about to fail.

Marsh 05-31-2006 01:41 AM

Hello Hayne,

Thanks for the info. One of the internal drives is the one in question. The original disk the PowerMac G4 came with about 3 years ago. The external drive is the exact same drive as the one in question - the Seagate ATA 80GB - but it brand new. I will do all you suggest and let you know. Is there any difference with Carbon Copy Cloner than a fresh install? I will run Disk Warrior after I back up the data. Just to be sure it is disk failure. Here is the console system data again:

You've still got Version Cue at least partially installed. You need to remove that.

Trevor

hayne 05-31-2006 09:32 AM

I would go further and say that while you are troubleshooting, you should remove (e.g. move them to the Desktop) all items under the /Library/StartupItems folder. The idea is to simplify your system configuration while trying to figure out the problem.

Note that all items under /Library/StartupItems are things that you have installed. By default, there is nothing under that folder.

Marsh 05-31-2006 05:06 PM

On the startup items - is that system startup or user startup items?

trevor 05-31-2006 05:07 PM

Both.

Trevor

Marsh 05-31-2006 05:54 PM

drag them both to the desktop and restart?

trevor 05-31-2006 07:06 PM

The directory /Users/yourusername/Library/StartupItems does not exist by default in an OS X installation. It's possible that creating this directory and placing the right kind of items into it makes for user startup items--I'm not sure. If you have /Users/yourusername/Library/StartupItems, (which is implied by your question in #37 above) then drag the contents of it to your Desktop.

What Hayne advised you to do was to drag the contents of /Library/StartupItems to your Desktop. After doing this, restart.

Trevor

Marsh 05-31-2006 07:38 PM

Here is where I have startup items. 1. /library/StartupItems 2. /system/library/StartupItems 3. /system folder/library/StartupItems (OS9)

trevor 05-31-2006 08:10 PM

Unless you automatically start Classic when you boot, you don't have to worry about the Classic/OS9 items in "System Folder".

Don't touch the /System/Library/StartupItems. Those are Apple-installed. Or at least, they should be. If some non-Apple stuff got put into /System/Library/StartupItems then we all have problems.

Trevor

Marsh 05-31-2006 10:16 PM

Here's the startup items in system:

As trevor has been trying to explain to you, that is irrelevant.

It's quite simple what you need to do.
1) In Finder, go to the folder /Library/StartupItems
2) Use the menu item "Edit / Select All" to select all of the folders that are under /Library/StartupItems
3) Click the mouse on one of these selected items and drag them all to the Desktop.
4) Restart your Mac

Ignore the items under /System/Library/StartupItems - just leave everything under /System alone.

That doesn't sound good.
Do you have your Mac set up to get any account info from an external server on your local network?

One thing that I would recommend trying (again in the spirit of trying to simplify your configuration while troubleshooting) is to physically disconnect your Mac from all networks. (Unplug all Ethernet cables, turn off Airport, etc.)

Of course you should also disconnect all non-Apple peripherals. That was in the list of standard troubleshooting steps so I assume you've already done this.

Do you know what "PocketMackSerial" is referring to? Does that ring any bells - recall anything that you might have installed?
Google only turns up one mention of this and it seems it is a kernel extension (under /System/Library/Extensions), presumably a 3rd-party one.

We don't know yet if your problems are due to hardware or software.
As I said before, you should be sure that you have backed up any files that you care about.

Before going to the point of replacing the hard drive(s), you should consider doing an "archive & install" of OS X from the Install CD/DVD - being sure to select the option to preserve users. This will keep all your user files and just replace the OS X system files and applications.

I will do all mentioned and give you answers tomorrow.

You've got a SCSI card? This is information that would have been helpful a long time ago. What driver are you using for that? That seems like a possible cause of all these problems.

What is a scsi card? Something I added?

You have reported that you have a PowerMac G4 1.25 GHz Dual. That computer has slots on the motherboard that support PCI. You have a PCI card plugged into the motherboard that gives your computer the ability to use SCSI drives. It is apparently an Acard AEC 671x PCI Ultra-SCSI 3 adapter.

Are you not aware of this card?

If you open up the side of your PowerMac, do you see any card other than the video card?

Trevor

Marsh 06-01-2006 11:44 AM

Opps, I remember I added a Slide Scanner when opened the mac and did add a scsi card about two years ago - I never use the scanner now.

Then you need to remove the SCSI card that you're not using anyway.

Now, have the problems gone away?

Trevor

Marsh 06-01-2006 08:16 PM

I removed the SCSI card. Unplugged all the periphials, disabled all the startup items and rebooted and this is the result:

Are you running Disk Warrior from the CD or from a different disk than the one you are trying to fix?
In any case, it sounds bad. I assume that the disk that is getting the bad report is not the one you backed up your documents on.

With all the problems listed above and your apparent inability to remove the 3rd-party software, plus the report from Disk Warrior, I would recommend that you make sure that you've got a backup copy of all of your documents and then do an "erase & install" from the OS X Install CD/DVD.
The "erase" part will completely remove all files from the disk you choose in the installer, so be sure to choose the right disk. After the reinstall, test the system carefully for at least a few hours before installing any 3rd-party software. Then install things one at a time and test after each.

Marsh 06-02-2006 02:05 AM

Here are some answers I have moved startupitems to desktop for this boot. I installed pocketMac (blackberry software) referring to pocketMackSerial. Not sure what you mean by console crash log? Also, I did boot off the DiskWarrior CD to run a rebuild on the disk we are trying diagnose and fix, Anyway here is the new console system log:

Thanks guys for all your help - machine seems to boot up much faster a d
not stall except when I do major expose functions in a row and only stalls for a moment - not three minutes like before. Does the above last console log still indicate needing a new disk. I have backed up all important documents. Thanks.

Well, it certainly is still showing an I/O error. Which indicates that something is still wrong.

The I/O errors are with your boot drive:

Jun 1 22:48:52 localhost diskarbitrationd[44]: disk1s9 hfs 28F13CC6-5B26-3352-A962-B86ECB73B046 Marshall's Mac /

That almost always indicates hardware problems with the drive itself, the IDE cable or the controller (on the motherboard).
There is a very high probablility that changing that drive will solve your problem.

To make sure there are no strange kernel extensions left, show us the output of this terminal command:

kextstat | grep -v com.apple

Kextstat test results:
