I've tried looking at TFM and it says to use disk utility to copy a cd. This isn't working with any of my audio cd's. These are rather old cd's so I doubt they have any copy protection on them. How do you exactly copy an audio cd, under osx.

Thanks, I just got my first mac and this is one I'm having trouble with.

Photek 05-11-2006 03:48 AM

the non technical way would be to import the CD into iTunes, make a new playlist of the songs and burn it to a blank CD. Whole process may take 6-8 mins.

Be aware of the quality you import at (aiff or wav are best) and obviously set it to burn as an 'Audio CD' not an mp3 one!

Not Any? How are you trying to copy them in Disk Utility?

The following are the steps to duplicate a CD/DVD with Disk Utility:

4. Choose "compressed," read/write," or "DVD/CD master" from the Image Format pop-up menu.
If you want to create a disc you can use to start up your computer, choose "DVD/CD master." Otherwise, choose "compressed" to create a smaller disk image, and choose "read/write" to create a disk image that's quicker to create and open.

5. Click Save.
6. When creating the disk image finishes, eject the original CD or DVD.
7. Select the disk image in the list and choose Images > Burn,
8. When the Burn Disc dialog appears, insert a blank CD or DVD, and click Burn.

You can continue using the disk image to create as many duplicate discs as you need.

nope

The itunes way doesn't do it right, because the gaps are wrong and some cd's have wrong pre-gaps. I'm just looking for a simple way to backup all my cd's.

The Disk Utility way doesn't work because when you fo to File->new->

it doesn't have the drive there, it just says select a drive, even if the cd drive is selected. The screwy thing is that this works just fine with data cd's.

What the hell? I'm not trying to do anything wierd, and this has worked with other computers since my first cd burner. What was apple thinking this should be simple.

Seams like no one knows the answer to this, the only thing I've heard is to buy a $100 package in addition, and then it doesn't even work on intel macs. Sorry for the rant but this is pretty damn stupid.

It might be useful if you showed us a screen capture of Disk Utility when you are trying to do this.
(Press Command + Shift + 4 and then sweep out the area. The image file will be "Picture 1" on your Desktop.)

Scuzzydriver 05-11-2006 10:59 PM

I use clone cd and it sees all my drives on install.
When I back up my cds, I just choose to copy in the main menu and then click on music cd. I have never had a copy fail yet. Hope this helps.

Bodach 05-25-2006 03:15 PM

I have the same problem

I am unable to create a disk image from a music cd using Disk utility.
The music cd appears in Disk Utility however "File > New > Disk Image from" is not an available option - it is grayed out.
I have screen shots but I don’t have the necessary permissions to upload to the forum.

Does this happen with all music CDs or just some?

I have tried several music cds all with the same result. I have tried both music cds created in iTunes and store bought with the same results. "The File > New > Disk Image from" option is available with all other data disks I have tried. It appears to be only music cds.

You don't seem to have selected anything on the list of devices in the upper left. Try clicking on the CD drive name.

trevor 05-25-2006 07:14 PM

Actually, it doesn't show anything highlighted in the first picture, so we can't tell what you've got selected when you took the second picture. You've got to select the audio CD itself "776.6 MB MATSHITADV..." not the partition "Greatest Hits".

The likely explanation is that you're selecting "Greatest Hits". Note the message in the New > Disk Image From? It says (Select a Device). This is a tip to select the device not the partition.

Has anyone else been able to image an audio cd? Is the possibly a form of copy protection built into OSX?

Thanks for helping with this.

trevor 05-26-2006 12:54 PM

Yes, I can image audio CDs with no problem.

I'm a pc person by trade but I use my 12" PowerBook G4 for everything fun, cool and not work related. I admit I'm not a Mac expert. Is there some setting somewhere that I'm missing? I'm wondering if this thread's original poster is still having the issue and what Mac they are using.

assuna 05-26-2006 02:16 PM

Reading this thread i tried it as well and the result is:
I can't make images the way trevor can.

I am using a G5, Dual 2.0 GHz, with 10.4.6.

I'm not aware of any setting like that.

Are you an Admin user?

Can you put an audio CD into your drive, allow it to mount, then open up Terminal (an app in /Applications/Utilities) and copy/paste the following commands from the forum to the Terminal's command line, one line at a time? You might have to hit the Return key at the end of a command after you copy/paste.

ls -alo /Volumes
diskutil list

So, what did I just do?

trevor 05-26-2006 02:58 PM

You didn't make any changes, you just got us some information about your volumes and their permissions.

Code:

drwx------ 3 bodach admin - 102 Jun 11 2005 LATHAM;MAINCOMPUTER
What is that? That looks anomalous. Let us know if it's something expected.

In any event, below is a workaround to image audio CDs with Disk Utility. This works for me in Tiger:

1. In Disk Utility, select the CD in the left pane..

2. Select the File menu > New > Disk Image From Folder...

3. A box will popup "Select Folder to Image". In the top right is a search box. Click on the search box to enable it, then type into it a forward slash (the '/', in other words.) This will bring up a new sheet labelled "Go To The Folder". Finish typing
/Volumes
into the dialog. Note that the initial V is capitalized. If you type this in all lower-case, you seem to be sent to the root folder, so capitalize correctly.

4. Select the name of the CD that you want to image, and click the "Image" button.

5. You will get another dialog box allowing you to select where you want to save the disc image. You can choose somewhere convenient, such as your Desktop if you wish. Image format should be set to DVD/CD master. Unless you need to protect it for some reason, set Encryption to none.

6. When the process is done, you will have a file with the name of your audio CD and the extension .cdr on your Desktop, or wherever you decided to save it.

Bodach 05-26-2006 03:19 PM

Thank you. That workaround worked perfectly.

as for that volume "drwx------ 3 bodach admin - 102 Jun 11 2005 LATHAM;MAINCOMPUTER"

I was wondering about it as well. I believe that it is from when I was logged into a friend's windows network. His workgroup was called LATHAM and the computer was MAINCOMPUTER. Why is this still here. Can I delete it? If yes, how?

Thanks for all of your help.
-Jeff

trevor 05-26-2006 04:18 PM

If you are logged in as bodach, then all you should have to do is launch Terminal and copy/paste the following command:

rm -r /Volumes/LATHAM\;MAINCOMPUTER

Note that the backslash before the semicolon is not a mistype--that is so that the semicolon is used explicitly and not as a divider between commands.

After issueing the command above, you should get no response, just another prompt. If that happens, everything went well and the directory and its contents were deleted. You can verify that it's gone with ls -al /Volumes

If you get an error message, let us know and we'll help further.

Trevor

Bodach 05-26-2006 04:33 PM

Thank you! All worked perfectly.

Yeah, and you have to be computer scientist to do it. I have 10.3.9 and I'm telling you the "image from device" option is greyed out with an audio CD and not a data CD, and I'm selecting the device, not the partition name.

The workaround proposed by someone else (below) by choosing "Image from Folder" and navigating to the mount point under "/Volumes" works, but it's a pain in the ass and takes forever.

Importing into iTunes (after insuring to select WAV format or lossless format for full fidelity) then burning is also indirect.

I should be able to insert the CD, right click on it, select duplicate, and that's it.

picador127 05-29-2006 11:08 PM

This didn't work for me.
It just creates a data CD with aiff sound files, even though I picked DVD/CD master and the image had a *.cdr extension.
There's NO WAY to copy CD's without importing into iTunes. I think this is part of Apple's iTunes deal -- prevent people from making fair-use backups with their software.

Squabsy 05-30-2006 08:04 AM

The only way I am aware of to exactly duplicate an audio CD on a mac is to use unix tools
try cdrdao
or X-cdroast
via Fink or darwin ports
Both work flawlessly for me
Check out also MAX 0.6 the first "secure" CD ripper for mac osx which can rip a cd as one long track with a cue file that you should be able to burn with cdrdao

Although I'm convinced that I tested the truth of this statement using Disk Utility before posting, I find that I cannot now reproduce this with Disk Utility. I am now also finding that New > Disk Image from (Select a Device) is grayed out with audio CDs.

In any event, if Disk Utility cannot do it, it can still be done very easily using other tools. Squabsy mentions cdrdao above, which is a free command-line program. I've also done this many times using Toast.

jlipps 06-05-2006 06:47 PM

Trevor,

thanks for those steps. They seemed to work, only the audio CD I was dealing with was maxed out on space (right around 700MB). When it was converted to a CD/DVD Master, somehow it expanded to 866MB, which prevented me from then burning any copies from it. Do you know why this happened?

Jonathan
