Wildlife photo of the week

I started a new personal web space using iWeb and set up a PhotoBlog of my wildlife photo of the week.

I've got thousands of wildlife pictures of all kinds that I've taken through the years. Lots of fun. :)

ArcticStones 04-24-2006 11:31 AM

Cactus wrens and sea eagles

.
Nice shots, Phil. I especially liked the cactus wren.
And I’m amazed that 48x digital zoom yields that good results. The bald eagle and inca doves were cool.

I just finished a grant application for a Norwegian film maker who intends to make a documentary on the white-tailed sea eagle. Hope he gets thumbs up.

Majestic birds of prey! You may know they were hunted all over Europe during the 19th century, becoming extinct in many countries. But many years of conservation have paid off; the eagle populations are increasing and re-conquering their old habitats. In 1975, for instance, five of these eagles were re-introduced to Scotland from Norway.

But that’s a tangent...

:) With best regards,
ArcticStones

Jeffo, on the composite shot from Africa, did you fire a flash when you shot the landscape? Just curious about the lighting on the grass near you.

tlarkin 04-28-2006 11:21 AM

I snagged that penguin pic. I keep a library of pics of penguins for my linux box and every 30 min the desktop becomes a new penguin pic!

mclbruce 04-28-2006 04:21 PM

I visited the local redwood grove yesterday.

But here is a link to Per Eide, one of Norway’s finest photographers. Six years ago, I was privileged to publish a book (cover photo) with him -- his images are pure magic!

There are several tropical water species of penguins. Really there are only a few penguins that live in the cold.

you cant blame them really... where you gonna live given the choice? In the Sun where no one bothers you or in the freezing cold where you have other beasts trying to eat you.

My current Desktop photo. I don't know what this camelia is called. It starts out as a red bud, turns varigated as it opens and is almost white before it falls off. Pretty.

(How do you do the thumbnail option? Cheers.)

The tribe woman was one picture.
The three kids in the clouds were a second picture.
The sunrise and dark horizon were a third picture.
If I remember right (this was several years ago I did this), the foreground was the same shot as the sunrise, but a second scan with different exposure scan.

Nice! I’m envious. :) What were the occasions -- do you join a lot of expeditions like that?

And, Freelunch, nice Camellia.

I'd really like to do more, but can't swing them too often. That's the only high-altitude trip I've taken. I actually learned about it while doing the opposite...spelunking.

The group was comprised of 4 trekkers (myself included) going up to Camp 3. The rest of the group was going up to the North Col. The company that led the trip was International Mountain Guides, based out of Washington. Being my first trip that high, I figured a well established outfit was the way to go. One person in the group hit the wall at base camp, had pulmonary edema. It was crazy.

When I click on your first link, I get a blank page. On the second link, I get "server not found".

To get my thumbnail, I clicked on the paperclip icon, then navigated to a file that was already on a server.

olej24 05-04-2006 02:22 AM

My images ar on a personal web sharing site set up in system preferances>sharing. The yahoo link above is using yahoo's photo uploader. I will put some files in a folder on that and let you guys access it later today, that will be the easiest thing to do.

I put it together in Photoshop, which at the time, I believe would have been v4.0.

olej24 05-04-2006 12:43 PM

Ok, i've uploaded the photos, you can see them here

They were mainlly taken in morocco: Including the sand village were part of the gladiator was filmed, the atlas mountians and marrakesh at night.
And Mexico: chitzen itza
And my local city: Parade when the football team won the league and picture from the stadium.

They just sat there chewing and it was the perfect picture, took several attempts but got there in the end. my favorite is chitzen itza. It's a spectacular building. They have made the two sides you can see look good, but the other two are just rubble. You couldn't walk up them

jeffo 05-17-2006 10:59 AM

Any other photos?

okohll 05-19-2006 03:18 PM

These photos are all top class. Here're mine, the black and white with a minolta SLR, the colour with a point & shoot digital.

Oliver!

that bird on the Van is awesome!

whats the changce of getting a desktop sized version of that?

best things I have ever seen scrawled on the back of a van is 'illegal immigrants in transit' or ' I wish my wife was this dirty' !:D

okohll 05-20-2006 03:14 AM

Saw one on the back of a truck that said something along the lines of 'If you can read this, it's too late to brake' which I liked.

Saw the bird walking down the street round the corner from my old flat, so nipped back to get the camera. 1600x1200 version uploaded to http://www.kohll.com/big_bird.jpg

  2. http://caius.name/photos/5star/pages/page_28.php
