Show your Desktop

Couldn't find a thread on this. I'm a member of many hi-fi forums and there's always a thread somewhere where people can post piccies of their setup.

So I thought i'd start an equivalent one here :) :

(my desktop is actually 1280x854, but I had to scale it down slightly to allow imageshack to host it)

http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/2...ure13bs.th.png

...would be interesting to see what the rest of you have.

tlarkin 04-04-2006 04:55 PM

that is a cool pic!

I don't think i should show off my theme desktops. Unless you like kung fu and monkeys and plus, well I run mostly windows/linux but do have a G4 and G5 in my office we use for work stuff. Maybe I'll copy one of my themes over and post it.

Gaffer74 04-04-2006 05:02 PM

Yes please. It would be great to "put a desktop to a name" for everyone ;)

I've got about 81 images on continual rotation, of which 18 are of astronomy. Got loadsa them from Hubble Site amongst others. I'm not an astronomer, but am still always amazed when I see great piccies of other solar-systems/nebulae/planets.

Nice specs Mikey-San :)

What's that lock symbol in the taskbar? Can't see the option in my sys prefs.
(oh, and how did you get the dock to sit "down" against the bottom if you don't mind me asking?, might be useful for me too)

DarkSaint 04-05-2006 12:14 PM

How did you get that cool design for your Terminal?

tbsingleton73 04-05-2006 12:31 PM

That, and you can go to "Window Settings" in Terminal and change it to look however you want.
I like the green text on black background and enough transparency to see what's behind it.

Mikey-San 04-05-2006 01:26 PM

The lock is the Keychain Access menu bar item. You can enable it with Keychain Access.

http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/4024/picture11oh.png

The Dock's pinning can be set via /usr/bin/defaults like so:

you$ defaults write com.apple.dock pinning end|middle|start

Pick one of those three, log out and back in, and you're good to go.

I've got Gaffer's galaxy, too. It's one of 399 images from which one is chosen at random at bootup for each of my monitors.

Needless to explain why I'm not posting 399 Desktop screenshots here?

Most are astronomical or fractals or landscape photography. A few custom Photoshop or Painter creations.

And no, it's not spyware, you can shut it off whenever you want.

Currently the developer is re-doing his site, so he doesn't have the full description back up.

Good going..399 .

Doesn't need to be all 399, just post one of 'em up :D

A question: if I position my dock on the left, it goes in the center of the window. How do you guys manage to place it at the bottom-right of the screen?

My first color-capable Mac was a 7100/80 running System 7.5, and some piece of software I bought came with a free copy of Connectix Desktop Utilities, one module of which let you set a desktop picture, like the later Desktop Picture Control Panel.

So I've been collecting these and having a random one chosen at bootup time ever since then.

Red_Menace 04-08-2006 03:06 PM

Wow, lots of neat fractals in there - is there a site that you use, or are those just collected over the years?

I also use a set (nowhere near 400 though) of random fractal, astronomy, anime, and photo images - here is an interesting one:

The fractals: I took screenshots of the ones I liked, using 3 different fractal generating softwares over the years.

The oldest ones were generated under System 7 using a program called Floating Fractals. I switched to another one called PowerXPlorer and used it during MacOS 8-9 years.

Finally, under OS X, I made heavy use of the screensaver Fracture.

Gaffer74 04-09-2006 12:17 PM

Wow, thanx for that link, great Fractals with Fracture (i personally mainly use StratWars though :) )

I made a gradual transition to my current desktop (a fade to black ;)) Among other things, this was briefly my desktop - pre MenuShade:

Then I switched to this self portrait - but I felt silly looking at myself:

The theme is pulsar which is a mixture of turquoise, black and grey. I am glad that someone shares my taste for the look of a desktop.

Is there any way to make fractals in Photoshop or Illustrator? Exuse my ignorance.

ataraxia 06-05-2007 10:25 AM

I don't know about doing it with Photoshop or Illustrator, but you can (and I do) make them with this free app: http://xaos.sf.net/ What's really fun is that you get to zoom in and out in real time, so it feels like you're flying through a fractal landscape.

It is the freeware OSXPlanet that was on the "few similar" link. I thought about the EarthDesk, but until I run into any problems from OSXPlanet then I will probably stay with what I have.

And yes it does update according to the time. It also shows the current location of the Space Station and Hubble Telescope, along with real cloud cover, volcano, and earthquake information. I have the earthquake and volcano options turned off though.

I went to the site that you linked, and that is one genius of an idea! Low level arial photography, from a model helicopter of all things! I wonder, is it less of a distraction? Could you use it at a gathering, like a concert, to take aerial shots without bugging people? I would imagine that little model would at least by less distracting than a full size helicopter eh?

And as a general note, I think it's interesting how much you can tell by looking at someones dock... Though it's kind of funny, I keep trying to role over the docks with my mouse so it will tell me the .apps name...I must be tired. I hate finals.

Daniel_C 06-20-2007 12:06 PM

At home I generally keep my wallpaper for a while until I get bored with it or run across something I like better, but at work I like to switch it up. I have this automator script (http://www.maxieduncan.com/software/ngpodwallpaper.php) in my login items, so whenever I get to work and start up it goes online and gets the National Geographic photo of the day and sets it as my wallpaper. It's pretty cool.

Hey, Ron, what are you using to customize your themes like that? It looks slick btw.

roncross@cox.net 06-26-2007 11:38 AM

Using ShapeShifter

What can I say tlarkin, I'm going APE over these themes. This theme is straight from Royal Inspiriat OSX 1.0. I am downloading these straight from shapeshifter preference pane. :)

Wall paper from interfacelift per your recommendation.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9569/image02bu2.jpg

tlarkin 06-26-2007 12:34 PM

I played around with the demo version but never bought it, maybe I should go buy it, or perhaps Leopard will be more customizable?

roncross@cox.net 06-26-2007 01:21 PM

I wouldn't count on Leopard being more customizable otherwise Steve would have brought it up.

It's a great product, plus my children like the change in theme as well. Besides, I am not upgrading to Leopard anytime soon so this is a good purchase for the family.

tlarkin 06-26-2007 02:09 PM

well they claim to have over 300 new features, and I bet that with core animation there has to be some things you can customize yourself, or at least third party developers will be able to release something of the like.

roncross@cox.net 06-26-2007 05:22 PM

That maybe true, but Shapeshifter would already be inline to enjoy these benefits as they have been doing customizations for years now. The only customization Steve mentioned was the transparent menu bar which is cool but failed to say anything else about other elements of the OS. Of course only time will tell but there must be a reason why Apple haven't allow customers to customize their computers and have left this to third party developers like shapeshifter.

johngpt 06-30-2007 07:07 PM

agnosticgod, thanks for turning us on to osxplanet. There once had been a satellite view of the earth in almost a mercator view, from koshi university which would show the clouds/weather systems rolling across the pacific. Thank you.

I got impatient. I was cursing at the computer, saying something like "Damned thing! Be gone now!" ;) The reason it's there is because I have UAC and Firewall shut off. (My router handles the firewalling, and UAC just plain sucks.)

I only got Vista on my MBP so that if someone tries to throw something at me that my Mac cannot handle, I can just fire up Vista and sneer in their face that my Mac can do Windows.

That, and games.

When my domain was up it was also called Valhalla, and Asgard was the server's name, and Odin was admin user of Asgard.

My hard drives are named Macintosh HD, OS X, OS X Server, Storage. Pretty plain and simple.

Good names all around ;)

I like to look at screenshots and not only see things like ShapeShifter-modded OS X screenshots, but other little things like what programs the person has running, or what addons they have installed.

Also: Here's another one of the G4 after I upgraded it to Tiger.

Here's mine: Adium would pop out of the left, and the dock would pop out of the bottom. The background is of some laser-guided missile defense system being tested somewhere I forget. It was from Wikipedia.

I have set a number of very large sized networks for different companies... the drive that people connect to is always called 'Mammoth'. Its funny to hear people referring to their yearly fiscal spread sheet being on 'Mammoth'.

topebrown7.. you have to much spare time man! for someone who is relatively new to Macs, you seem to have got 'modding' quite well covered! Although I do notice one very questionable app in your collection!

here's me... regal eh!
