MP3 disc with folders in iTunes

I have a car stereo that will play AAC and MP3 files from CDR, and it allows you to navigate through a folder heirarchy of artist etc etc. I haven't found a way to get iTunes to burn a CD with folders like this. Is it possible?
I can do it no problems with Toast 7, but would prefer to be able to include mixed playlists as well, and iTunes would presumably make that easier.....

solipsism 03-24-2006 07:33 PM

This is not possible with iTunes.

ldrury 03-24-2006 09:31 PM

Shame that....

I was starting to think that..... It's a pain, especially since you can so easily create a folder containing playlists - which I thought could easily become a disc with folders etc.... Sounds like an idea for a new feature Steve! :)

solipsism 03-25-2006 01:49 AM

A cleverer person than I could create an Applescript that would make a burn folder and import all song files from certain playlists.

tbsingleton73 03-25-2006 07:51 AM

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for and it doesn't create playlists.
But if you just drag the folders (albums) containg the songs to a Burn Folder and make a CD that way, won't you able to navigate through a folder heirarchy?

ShavenYak 03-30-2006 02:00 PM

I could swear that when you burn an MP3 CD from iTunes, it does arrange the files in artist / album subfolders. But maybe I'm confused. At any rate, your songs would have to be tagged properly - it's not going to be based on your playlists in iTunes.

You do know that Toast 7 can read your iTunes library? So you can make playlists in iTunes and then use them while creating the CD in Toast pretty easily.

tbsingleton's idea sounds good too... I wonder if you can drag a playlist from iTunes straight to a burn folder, or if you'd have to "show files" to get to the Finder to do the drag?

Toast works great for this. The spotlight-like search feature and it's ability to read the iTunes DB makes easy work of it. Hell, Toast is just great all around.

To create an MP3 CD with folders in itunes

1) Create a playlist
2) Sort the playlist (I usually do it by album)
3) Burn CD

The result will be an MP3 CD with folders based on the sort (so in my case folders containing each album individually).

And how did you create folders within an iTunes' Playlist?

Tried that and it worked.

Just discovered ...

... that we can't burn MP3 discs with music we purchased from iTunes' music store ... does anyone know why that is? We bought it ... why can't we record it to an MP3 disc?

I, too, have a car stereo that plays MP3 discs, as well as the homemade CDs I make from iTunes, but if I just burn a CD from a playlist, I have no folders, thus no way to listen to one artist instead of another. I'm bummed ... is there any work around I can do with music I purchased from iTunes?

Thanks!
Melissa

you seem to be talking about 2 different things.

1) if u bought music from ITMS then they are .m4p protected AAC files. U need to burn the songs to an Audio CD then reimport them as .mp3 files
2) to get mp3 songs with folders see above method...

iTunes audio discs

Thanks, BigC! I'm working on that right now. I see, however, that when I create an audio CD, from an iTunes playlist, the track title/artist does not carry over to the audio CD (so the ripped MP3s don't have them either). Is there a way to make this happen so I don't have to rename each individual track?

Thanks again! You rock!

Melissa

make the Audio CD from a playlist then immediately re-import it as MP3 (set the mp3 import type, 256 VBR works for me or 320 if you like). If IRC it will then remember the playlist song names even though the Audio CD does not have song titles...

It's a good way to back-up your DL CD's from ITMS anyway...

Melizzard 09-05-2006 10:59 AM

Sorry to be dense, but ...

... what's IRC?

And, my default encoding is CBR, but I can easily select VBR. Is that the better thing to do? If so, what minimum and maximum should I use? Yeah, I know I'm a little behind the times, but I'm new to MP3 discs ... ;)

BTW, I use iTunes for my audio discs and Express Rip for ripping ...

Thanks again!
Melissa

Bigc 09-05-2006 11:40 AM

meant if I recall correctly (IIRC)...VBR variable bit recording, I just use iTunes to rip It's easier and a compressed file is a compressed file doesn't matter to me if one ripper makes a better compressed file or not, it's still compressed...and good enuff for listening to...and in my reality the only good recording is analog (vinyl) and that's history, CD's are already artificial sounds.

Melizzard 09-05-2006 11:59 AM

... I tried ripping from iTunes, but it says it can't with the file extensions on the audio CD (which I thought was very strange since I created the audio CD from iTunes). The extension is .cda ... is there a way to change that in iTunes?

Melissa

guess I don't know where you got the files originally, look to be MS crap (i.e., DRM ??)...Audio CD's should be .aiff for mac..

paragon 11-01-2006 01:43 PM

it depends on the playlist view in iTunes, it will crate folders for artists and albums only when the playlist is organised by artist! I am now using the latest iTunes -7.0.2 and it have the option to organise the ply list buy album but according to the year and actually according to the artist as well and when I burned the playlist it didn't crate folders at all...

convert aac files to mp3 for my car stereo

I, too, have a car (civic) that plays MP3 CDs, but it does not play AAC files.

Is there an easy way (in either iTunes or Toast) to create an MP3 CD from both MP3's and AAC's? I've tried a few different ways, but nothing seems to work. I usually have to manually convert all the files to MP3, no automatic help.

Any ideas?

For Non-Protected AAC files:
Organize by file type, selet all the AAC files and then convert the whole lot at once.

For Protected AAC files:
You have to export to a CD and then copy back as Mp3. This is made easy by using DRM Dumpster to automate the process using iTunes built-in features and a single CD-RW.

But this creates duplicates in my iTunes and that's kind of a pain because then I have to find all the MP3s and delete them. (And I don't like using "show duplicates" because i do have duplicate songs that i keep (ie. live version of the same song)).

any other ideas? is there an applescript that will convert a whole playlist and organize it into folder structure outside of itunes. then i can just burn that folder with toast... ??

I have a script that I use, maybe it will help you:

I tried using that script, but I get an error: AppleEvent timed out. And it ends up only copying a few of the songs I had selected. Any ideas why?

Sorry, it works well for me if I try to copy 10 songs or so at a time. I've tried with more only once and I've it get hanged up. I have no idea why. How many songs seem to be the limit for you?

MP3s in Car Stereo Not Playing Back Properly.

I have a different problem of sorts: I have ripped some CDs that I own to MP3s for my car stereo. But it will play some of the MP3 tracks and not others.

I have a 2007 Jetta (I don't know if this is pertinent or not) and I ripped some CDs and was disappointed to see that some of them simply won't play back properly. I get an ERR TITLE error. I am assuming it is an error with the Title of the file-- however I see NOTHING different in the way these files are named compared with some that do play.

Could it be that some of these CDs that are manufactured may have some sort of anti-piracy software/script that is preventing the files from being converted to an MP3?
