eBay became incompatible with Macs
I'm no longer able to complete a listing on eBay, since a day or two ago. On the "pictures and details" page, clicking the submit button just takes me back to the home page. I've tried this on three Intel Macs, in Safari and Camino, same thing. Has anyone listed using a PPC Mac in the last couple days? I won't be in front of one until tomorrow or the day after.
|
I forgot I do have a PPC Mac here to try, and it works fine. So it's either the Intels having a problem, or something I've added to them. Though I shut down Little Snitch, the firewall, and popup blocking, with no improvement. I'd love to hear of others having success with listing on eBay using an Intel Mac.

Or maybe just compare the HTML source on the Intel & PPC. |
Good idea. The problem appears to be in the Javascript used by the site. I'd have to give some thought as to how to capture and compare that, it's not something I've done before. I looked at the JS log in Camino and had lots of JS failure messages.
|
I didn't see Firefox listed... Did you try it ? Asking simply since it doesn't use the same javascript that Safari and Camino use...
|
Wow, Firefox is slow and ugly these days.
But it DOES work! Hmm, you know, I think this broke right at the time I did the latest security update. I wonder if I can roll back the Java portions... |

Java and JavaScript are unrelated despite what the names suggest. |
Correct. But my thought was wrong; I have an unpatched machine with the same issue. So since this worked two days ago, then stopped, it must be a change on eBay's end.
Of course, their support so far is suggesting I use IE, turn off proxys, run a spyware checker, etc... |
Apparently they know it's broken and don't care. Here's the eBay answer:
To access eBay with your Mac, the recommended browser is Firefox v1.5 for Mac. While Camino is another alternative offered by Mozilla, it does not have the same compatability with the eBay site that Firefox does. |
I am using eBay daily on ppc and Intel and have had no errors yet.
Just listing a Treo and it's Ok so far... Gavin |
Did you list it using the Intel Mac? Which browser? Are you using the standard listing process or the new one-page form?
|
Using an Intel iMac with Safari and I went the long-winded way. I am only waiting for the pic to finish the listing. Lost my camera...
:-( Gavin |
Well, that answers the question I forgot to ask... The broken script is the photo uploading script. Without photos, the page works fine.
|
yeah same thing happened here, this is really stupid and I hope apple sort something out, although I am grateful that i can use it in firefox
|
Everyone who runs into this needs to complain to eBay. Right now they are treating me as the only one with a problem.

You are definitely not the only one. A friend of mine is making a living from selling records on ebay. I recently had to install tiger on his G3/350 just to let him use Firefox for ebay. Not that this was a bad idea but he was used to OS 9 until now. |
I am having the same problem, and I can't upload images using Safari on an Invision forum either. Pretty recent issue, but boring 'cause I have to remember to use Firefox from the get go, and it's not my standard browser at all.
|
Make sure you file a clear trouble ticket and push it when they give you the usual fluff answers.

I have just had this problem too. A way round it is to get info on the Safari app and check the 'open using rosetta' check box.
Obviously you take a performance hit but at least you can list items until someone sorts it out. HTH Andy Peat |
Same problem, just tonight I placed two items -one of them a Matias tactile keyboard which is wonderful but quite noisy- and had to use Firefox. I thought it was possibly because of Safari Stand, but glad to hear it is not. I am having the same problem on several sites, including my forum, based on Invision. Basically I have to remember to use Firefox every time I need to upload something. I will complain with Apple, on top of Ebay.

I had no problem listing an item on ebay yesterday. I'm using the latest release of Camino. I highly recommend it. Only thing i saw was that i had to use html in my description. Not sure if you have to do that in windows now because i have never had to before. But i like using html so it didn't bother me.

Here is some code to make firefox run faster...
1. Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter. 2. Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean. 3. In the box that pops up enter config.trim_on_minimize. Press Enter. 4. Now select True and then press Enter. 5. Restart Firefox. Most web browsers have this implemented by default but firefox does not. |
