Netscape mail to Mac Mail...

I have an e-mail account through Netscape with which I can check through Netscape 7. I would prefer to receive my e-mail through Jaguar's built in Mail program. "Importing" doesn't work. I also tried duplicating the information from Netscape's Mail Preferences, but no luck. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Let me get this right: you want simply to set up Mail.app to check for mail? You are not trying to bring old mail from Netscape to Mail.app?

If that is correct, then you need to set up an account in Mail.app by going to the "Mail" menu, "Preferences," then "Accounts," then "Add Account."

At this point, you will need to input the server information. You haven't provided enough info for me to be specific. If Netscape mail works, however, you should be able to use the same info in Mail.app.

If you can describe exactly what problem you're having--e.g. an error message, perhaps?--then we can be more helpful to you.

Server error...

After setting up a new account, I get an error saying "cannot connect to the server imap.mail.netcenter.com through port 143." The server specifications through Netscape were:
Server name: imap.mail.netcenter.com
Port: 143

I played around with the settings in Mail.app and changed the server to mai.netcenter.net, it now connects but doesn't "authenticate"...I get an error message saying "connection to mail.netcenter.net through port 143 timed out" after about 30-45 seconds. I hope this helps explain the problem a bit more.

What is the actual mail server address? Is it mail.netscape.com? Or imap.mail.netscape.com?

Unless it is an IMAP server, you should have "POP" selected in the "Account Type" popup menu in accounts preferences. Is this the case?

David

It is an IMAP server. The actual server address through Netscape 7 is imap.mail.netcenter.com. It doesn't seem to get me anywhere though.

dsk 09-05-2002 04:11 PM

Okay... in that case, is "IMAP" selected in the "Account Type" popup menu?

Yes...

dsk 09-05-2002 04:16 PM

Good, that's a start. ;-)

Now, go to the "Advanced" tab and see if "Use SSL" is checked. If it is not, then check it and input your user information.

Using SSL:

The error I get now is "The server error encountered was: The server “imap.mail.netcenter.com” can not be contacted on port 993."

I don't know, is there a support website for your provider? There may be specific instructions about which port to use, what type of authentication, etc. Check Netscape's preferences again to be sure everything is duplicated exactly in Mail.app.

No luck with the website or contacting Netscape for that matter...I'll triple check everything again...thanks for trying!

I had similar problems with my setup with roadrunner. Try thusly:

in mail preferences>accounts choose your default account and delete it entirely. Start a new one, with a new name other than what your default was. Fill it in with pertinent info. Then press the options button at the bottom and choose "none" from the authentication popup list.

I don't know how secure this is, but it is the only way I got it to work at all. The other choices in the list may work for you though, and be secure.

let us know if this helps.

Unfortunately, still no luck with setting up the account. I talked to Apple (which didn't get me anywhere) and Netscape wants $27 for technical support, so I'm stuck. I appreciate your help and if anyone has any other ideas, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

it occurs to me you might be able to just have your other mail account automatically forward to your main account. I have three separate mail accounts that forward. It works without problem.

lerkfish 09-06-2002 08:14 PM

never mind. I never had a netscape mail account, so opened one up to test my theory. apparently no way to autoforward mail, at least no obvious way.

I still havn't had any luck trying to resolve this problem...any other ideas?

Nkrocky 09-13-2002 01:33 PM

Help...........please...

joetom 09-13-2002 03:36 PM

is IMAP also chosen in the system preferences>internet>email settings?

Not to disparage the fine folk here, who have provided me with much wonderful info, but I suggest asking this in the MacNN forums. They have helped me with tons of stuff.

Nkrocky 09-13-2002 05:42 PM

Yes...I played around with all those settings as well...still no luck. I am also running NetBarrier and looked at the log only to find out that all the settings provided by Netscape are bogus (unless I misread them). The settings as specified by
Netscape: (server: imap.mail.netcenter.com) & (port: 143)....using
Netbarrier: (server/site: imap-d25a.mx.aol.com) & (port: 5004)*

*Netbarrier's server changed between (imap- d25a .mx.aol.com and
imap- d26a .mx.aol.com) while the ports changed between (5000, 5001...., 5005)

I hope this makes some sense to someone??? Anyway, any thoughts?

Any new ideas out there...???

accessing netscape.net account using Mac Mail

I have an netscape.net account which I used to access using netscape 7.1.
Then I started using Mozilla Thunderbird and it explicitly says that it will not support netscape.net mail accounts. I wonder if Mac OS X Mail tool suffers from the same problem - i.e. netscape.net is somehow incompatible.

Any answers?
