Still have a 9.2.2 basic install, mostly for sentimental reason :)
Cheers... |
I still use a majority of classic software either:
because OSX updates haven't come (Quark, Statview, SPSS), because OS X lacks appropriate font handling (Adobe Type Manager). or because I'm a Luddite and prefer my old-and-familiar programs (Word 5.1, Endnote). The latter don't work so well in the classic mode, so soon I will need to cough up Word and Endnote updates. Although I use a majority of classic software, I prefer OSX interface. The cost of updates is a real factor in weighing a complete switch. |
Zip Zap Zop
I had to boot in Mac OS 9 the other day to reformat a Zip disc! Since the disc was in PC format, Mac OS X could not edit the name of it! (no such prob in Mac OS 9)
Iomega Tools does not install in Mac OS X (v3.5), so I had to install it in Mac OS 9 so that I could reformat the disc. That's the first time in quite a while I was forced out of Mac OS X.. <sigh> |
I'm getting closer every day.
Lerkfish, I must thank you for suggesting VueScan! :) You have just put me one step closer to full OS X, but best yet, you have now made it so that I no longer have a need to boot in OS 9! :D Now if my registration email will just arrive, I'll be home free on scanning. :) I'm still waiting on a handful of software upgrades which are in the works, but not released yet. I can't let go of Classic mode until those upgrades become available. AHunter3, just a few months ago, I was also in your position. I was still running OS 8.1 with some software and hardware limping along. I couldn't even upgrade to OS 8.6 without major hardware and software upgrades. The upgrade to OS X has been a very long and costly experience, but one I have not regretted. One big reminder of why I'm happy to finally be upgrading is when a Classic app crashes, bringing down Classic and all other Classic apps with it. All of my OS X apps continue to run, totally unaffected. Each time this happens, I am reminded that I would have suffered a total crash had I been running a previous OS version. Although I thoroughly enjoy the OS X interface, it is the OS X stability that makes it worth all of the time, effort and money I've spent on upgrading. My VueScan registration email just arrived! :) |
not looking back
i have four machines, two are X only and the other two are too old to run os X. the 7100 i am wanting to put MKLinux on, but i am still using it for my DNS and email server. the 8500 i am running Yellow Dog Linux on and i have to use the mac os to get Yellow Dog to boot, but it is not in classic much, only when i need to run Kodak Camera Manager or Kodak Capture Studio for the pro line of cameras.

Back to using Classic, Again.
I'm back to using Classic, again (actually booting into OS 9). Thanks to Medal Of Honor. If I run it in OS X I get about 20FPS (max of 32) standard and it usually degrades when two enemies are on screen. If I boot into OS 9 I get about 80FPS the lowest I've gotten in OS 9 is about 40ish FPS.
Can anyone explain why this happens? No I'm not complaining, I'm seriously wondering why. Same graphics card, same amount of memory, etc... Just different OS. Strange... - Daniel |
I'm one step closer! Just downloaded Palm desktop software that syncs with my Treo 90 natively.

Mostly I use 10.2.1. Classic only comes into play when I use Poser 4 (Poser 5 is coming out for PC first, as usual:mad: )
Once in a great while I boot to 9.2.2 to play games like Myst 3 etc. |

On my PowerBook (which is my work system) I have it set up to only boot into Jaguar, and I think that today was the first time in about three weeks that I actually started up the classic environment in Jaguar. I still have non-native apps, but I used them so little that the cost of upgrading them is just not worth it. On my iMac, I tend to boot into Mac OS 9 quite a lot... but that is mainly because of the amount of games that I play (and quicktime editing) and not for productivity reasons. |
I'm Free
Well I have it installed but only because it was installed as part of 10.1 when I bought my systems...
I'm running 10.2.1 now and it's still hanging around but I do not boot into it and it has never been started, everything I need is under X... something things that I thought cool in 9 I'm waiting on but not much and I can live with out them until they get accross.. Since having X the functionality of my system and my productivity has gone through the roof! I can just drop into a shell whenever I feel like it, I can write perl code in BBedit and run it in the shell... I can go out and about with my laptop, reliase I've left a file on the desktop, and connect to the desktop and "scp" the file over to the laptop... I can even start up a webserver on my laptop which can run perl and PHP scripts while on a customers site!, nar this is way too cool...windows you have nothing on this... ---Zed  |
Classic Apps: The good, the bad, the ugly
Here are the things which still make me keep classic:
- Adobe Photoshop 5.5 LE As I have only legal software on my machine, I rather keep classic than cough up the dough to upgrade - Canon DigitalCamera Software There are some things I need special software for (i.e. QTVR Panoramas) and I really would wish Canon would update their stuff to OS X - Microsoft Exchange 2001 Unfortunately I need this for my office eMail, and I really, really hope Microsoft will update it very soon. Never used it!
I dumped it because I have never in my life (long) uned it. I have been using FreeBSD since the early 80's. I have never used a Mac before OS X and Darwin, of course.

Waiting for Canon's Bloody update
Not yet. The only thing that prevents me from trashing OS 9 is an X update from Canon for their G1 PowerShot Camera, namely the Raw Converter software. I will never buy another Canon Digital Camera. It's pretty obvious from what I read that they prefer to support the Dark Side. I don't understand why Apple promotes Canon wares. Nikon rocks!

Actually I did not yet complain to Canon about the lack of OS X software, maybe we should just bring it to their attention more. Canon actually listens to customer input (sometimes, at least). Alex |
Re: Waiting for Canon's Bloody update
Sure Canon has good cameras and optics, I don't doubt that. It's just that for a company of this size and quality, they have given no sign of fully supporting OS X. Canon has already announced a G3 model, I believe, and they still have not produced the supporting software for OS X (which has been around for quite a while now). I have complained to Canon. No reply, of course.

SASIxp
The fine folks at NCS Pearson produce a student information system called SASIxp. For well over a year now they have been "looking into" making it work in OS X. So far it won't even work in Classic! Because of them the entire 20,000 student K-12 school district can't move to OS X! All teachers and administrators must boot into 9 to run SASIxp. :(
Personally I just fix the computers and don't mess with student records so Jaguar is for me! |
I use my Canon S200 (small camera) with Mac OS X only (Image Capture) and my Canon S520 (low-end printer) with Mac OS X only. (Why the names are so similar and yet are such different products, go figure..)
I love both, the software for the camera is simply something I don't use and the software for the printer installed wonderfully and is very well written. I had to throw that in, to just even out the Canon critique! --- I don't use Classic at all. |
SoundApp - does anyone know if this wonderful app is going to get ported to X? I use it to convert MPEG1 audio streams to QT streams. Using QT to do it makes it "mute".
Virtual GameStation - i'll eventually just abandon this in favor of using my real PlayStation, but can't until I mod my PSX to play imported games. Newtourage - syncs my Newton 2100 to entourage X. ResEdit - haven't touched it in a year... probably don't really need it anymore Astarté CD-Copy - now long-defunct CD imaging program. I still use it to look at the "guts" of CDs. |
