Counter-strike On mac os x?
Hi, i have a powerbook g4 1.5 ghz with 1.25 gb of ram, and a 64 meg graphic card. I also have virtual pc, will it work or run smoothly if i run cs on it?
|
CS most likely will not even start on Virtual PC. It's just too much to ask of an emulator.
I imagine this will be possible in the future with the intel macs, and whatever solutions come about that allow you to run windows apps from within MacOS X (or just dual booting windows) |
I've started Counter-Strike 1.5 on VirtualPC though, back before Steam was around.
It worked, but was completely unplayable, unless you like watching slideshows and massive control glitches (I couldn't even aim) Maybe with a current Intel Mac you could get it to run under Wine, i mean, I could run Steam under Wine on Linux so hopefully it would work. |
Has anyone tried it?
|
Yeah, people have tried running games on Virtual PC. It just doesn't work.
I think the only games that will run on VPC are Solitaire and maybe Pinball, and other really, really old games (definitely no FPS games) |

if you want to run PC games get a PC....
VPC is 'pegged' back to something like a 400mhx P2 in its emulation anyway, so it has little effect if you have a blazingly fast mac anyway. There really is NO way to make VPC perform like a fast PC. The best solution I know of is to buy a cheap PC from ebay for £60 and connect it via ethernet to your Mac with RDC. You can run your PC headless.... just stick it under your desk and forget about it.... either way a cheap PC, ethernet cabe and RDC is still loads cheaper and MUCH faster then VPC will ever be! |
Alright thanks for that

The new steam-based CS would not launch at all (well, I got tired of waiting for steam to start CS after about 45 minutes of sitting staring at an hourglass, so...) For the record, though, my Mac is an 800 MHz iBook G4. The video card (radeon9200 mobility) doesn't matter since VPC emulates its own video card and doesn't use the one in your mac. I had to start CS in software mode.(obviously, the VPC-emulated video card isn't hardware 3D accelerated) Basically, CS will start but it's so not useful that you might as well not even try. --- Quote:

Virtual PC slow

What's sad is that we own a piece of s&^$ old Toshiba Pentium II 233 laptop which can run the same game smooth as glass. I'm so jealous of the new Intel-based macs that can run Windows natively. That would be awesome! But I've already thrown down $2000 on a Dual G5 -- such is life:( |
has anyone tried using MS Remote desktop connection to do play?
|
I have read that people play HL 2 on wine, which is an emulator for linux. I don't see why an emulator can't run it, it won't run well no matter how fast your processor is, but it may run.

There is a project called darwine for osx. It can't do much yet. Games will never work on PPC, as it uses qemu to emulate x86 processor calls. However games should be possible at some point on x86 macs. |
What do i need to download from wine HQ to run PC programs on a PPC?
|
Ok...you got me
how do you get cs to play on a mac...
|
|
actually my buddy tried loading HL 2 on an intel mac running windows, it apparently crashed and burned really bad. HL 1 may run though, but then you are stuck at CS 1.5, when CS source is like a ton better.
maybe wait for leopard to come out better ms support |
HL2 runs fine under boot camp - that is - with a MacBook Pro 2.0 with 2gigs of ram....
The video card really needs to be up to it, The MacBooks - niot the "Pro" version - just don't have the video chops.... |

hmmm i read that HL2 doesn't run so well on macs with windows loaded on it. |
Well..... I've just started playing it, and it looks fine so far.... I haven't got to any really heavy scenes yet... Then I may be disappointed. But for now, I'm pretty much amazed!
|
Does anyone know of a game similar to cs (NOT TAC OPS) which you can just buy as a package and you dont have to go through loads of complicated processes just to play the thing?!!:)
|
I've seen folks running Battlefield 2 using Bootcamp nearly flawlessly, faster than my Athlon PC.
As for VirtualPC, it's a dud with games. Are you looking to play CounterStrike, CounterStrike Condition Zero or CounterStrike: Source? The original CS and CS:CZ will run on a modest PC with nothing more than a GeForce 4600 and 512MB of RAM. Something like that might set you back a hundred or so with monitor+keyboard, on eBay. If you are even somewhato interested in playing a lot of games then I wouldn't skimp, might as well build your own from some of the newer parts out there, and then you can play just about anything you throw at it. |
Try Ghost Recon

It's got really decent multiplayer and great CO-OP missions. http://images.apple.com/downloads/ma...ghostrecon.jpg |

You could grab a copy of Quake 3 Arena from the bargain bin somewhere and install the Urban Terror mod.
My 12" 867 powerbook runs it quite well, not exactly the same as CS but very close. You might also like Return to Castle Wolfenstein / Enemy Territory although they are WW2 rather than modern, and do need a bit beefier machine than Q3 or UT. |
i have a intel imac g5 17". i just got parallels on it and i downloaded steam on it. it works yes, but every time i move the mouse its almost like it swrills. like the crosshair moves to fast. no its no the sensitivity. i had that ALL the way down, still did it, all the way up and still did it. so is it just cuz its windows on a mac? is that why it wont run good?
|
Sorry to bring this one back - but I am keen to get an indication from anyone that may know if STEAM is planning to release a Mac version.
I have a D-Core MacBook Pro with 2 gig and have had Steam running well on a Bootcamp install - Parallels is just too crappy. However, I have banished the windows partition but I am addicted to Steam DOD:Source. Is there a future for Steam and Mac? |
OK heres the deal:
The answer is YES you can play CS:Source on a MAC (propperly YES!) HARDWARE u need: An INTEL based Mac A decent Graphics card and over a gig of ram SOFTWARE: CROSSOVER With crossover you run the steam installation, log in, download CS:Source. Then you enter some startup atributes to the console, so it will run propperly. (Full screen doesnt work yet). NOW PEOPLE! no arguing! ive spent the last 4 hours playing CS:S on my mac for the first time, this is the shizzle... I got a mac 24" running CS:S at 1900x1133 (widescreen) Fps of 43 And... its awsome... GET YOUR HANDS ON CROSSOVER! NOW! They are doing free beta testing atm, go go go!!! |
I need help, I’m so close...
So I got Counterstrike and everything, but I don’t know how to go out of full screen or it’s all jumbled or something. What should I do?
|
In steam, you need to set the launch parimiters, check the forums on the official website, or check steam website.

I feel a little dirty starting up this thread again but did a wee search and found wolfenstein in this thread and thats what im needing help with.
