Getting frequent "/usr/bin/lookupd[xxxx] exited abnormally; Hangup" error.
I use the freeware MkConsole to list my system log in the desktop, and, incidentally, I've been noting a very frequent system log line stating about lookupd hanging-up.
Also, my wan connexion has been very instable lately, with regular Airport failures. Here's part of my system log file, maybe someone can point me to some obvious solution. Try using "iStumbler" (www.istumbler.net) to monitor the signal from your Belkin box. Perhaps it is merely failing to supply a good signal.
|
thanks, I'll give it a try.
Meanwhile, is there anything else in my system log listing that I should worry about? Vic |
Well, I've been using iStumbler for an hour now, and no problem is reported. My signal is between 25 and 30, noise is zero, and no special error in iStumbler logs.
So it much be a system network problem. Vic |
|
I tried iStumbler and ther's nothing wrong with the signal. I get a constant, regular airport signal, with no breaks.
So it's all about my system. Must be. Thanks for any new help. Vic |

Yet I still get the same errors, with Airport shutting down, lookupd hanging up... I will not rest until I identify their source. People help please. Vic |
update to 10.4.5 didn't change the lookupd bug

I don't think your lookupd problems are important - they are just the result of the broken connection. You need to have a look at the router. |
So AP in (AP deAhth 0) means the router?
OK, thanks, I'll keep an eye on it to see what happens. Meanwhile, I'll try to change (part of) the router config Vic |
I think bramley is correct: AP = Access Point is a commonly used term for the wireless base station.
|
And what about "deAhth 0"?
the zero code means some error, i have seen on some forums other error codes, like deAhth 15. But what error exactly is 0 ? Vic |

I see you have a belkin router - does this not have its own logging facility? That might provide more info about what the router is up to. You might also see what happens when you run your wireless network without security - just as a test. The router is deauthorising your computer. That might be because the router doesn't like something about the security you are employing. Testing the network without security would allow you to confirm/eliminate this possibility. |

So, it's all about the signal, just found it.
Using iTumbler, I get a green 60 signal level near my router, but in my office, i get a red 25 one. While being near the router, I didn't get any "Link DOWN (AP deAuth 0)" error. But they sure came back as soon as I went to the office room. So it looks like I need to amplify my router's signal. How? Vic |
|
Before buying anything it can pay to look at where your router is sited.
I moved my router from my lounge floor to my kitchen and duct taped it to the wall close to the ceiling. As a result I now get the highest data rate all over the house, and none of the variable data rates that I used to get. In general, getting the router off the floor close to the ceiling significantly improves range and/or throughput. |
Good point, bramley. Easy to try...
OK, thanks to you all for your help. I sure now feel better ! Vic 8) |
Just to say I tried bramley's technique (?), and my signal is much better.

Hangup v Hanging
Hangup - Unix command to quit a running process; like you hang-up the phone to end a call. This is not synonymous with process that is hanging. Hangup or SIGHUP (signal hangup) tells a running process to quit. This is different than a kill command, because it allows the running process to quit normally. A kill command simply stops a running process without allowing it to quit. Hangup is an action taken not an error message

Location
My laptop is usually right next to, if not in the same rooms as, my belkin wireless router. Yet, the lookupd errors are rampid (even if I use ethernet). This didn't happen before I got sattalite internet which is getting very good download speeds. The airport signal is also Very strong. Below is an excerpt from my log. The IP is the routers. I believe mDNSResponder is a Bonjour protocol.
launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[508]: exited abnormally: Hangup Jun 8 00:29:09 blueDog configd[42]: posting notification com.apple.system.config.network_change Jun 8 00:29:09 blueDog lookupd[511]: lookupd (version 369.5) starting - Fri Jun 8 00:29:09 2007 Jun 8 00:29:11 blueDog mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en1 (192.168.2.3); delaying packets by 5 seconds PS I don't have this problem when I'm connected to any other network, including the unprotected router somewhere else in my building. |
So, I'm guessing no one has any thoughts regarding my post?
